I am excited to honor Elizabeth Kekley for the 2nd federally recognized #juneteenth holiday. Kekley is the 1st known African-American woman to publish a book. She was a close friend and confidant of Mary Todd Lincoln. Kekley's memoir is considered an important narrative of President Lincoln's domestic life. Queen Kalanikaumakaʻamano Kaleleonālani Naʻea Rooke of Hawaii, aka Queen Emma was wife to King Kamehameha IV and built schools for girls (girls were not educated at the time) and had Queen's Hospital built in Honolulu.
