you're aware that you're looking like a complete psychopath right now right
Yes, the kind of psychopath who politely points out that a mass generalisation is flawed, as opposed to the kind of reasonable person who gets so upset by someone disagreeing with them that they rush to lash out at them by sending anonymous hate. I hope youâve calmed down by now :)
That was one of the coldest and worst takes I've seen added to a post about keeping cats inside. Please think for once. Maybe go outside, too.
You do realise there are only like two takes you can have on that issue, right? I adopted my cats as rescues and they need to go outside. The people above me on the thread literally said that if you let your cats go outside itâs your fault if they die and you must not care for them properly. My take is the other one. The one that the vast majority of the people in this country agree with.
But sure, please, please send me anonymous hate, if you havenât yet developed the self-control not to spit at anyone who takes your toys away.
idiot lol
Thatâs sad, I hope you're not when you grow up.
oh my god you're so stupid. toddlers AREN'T supposed to be allowed outside without constant monitering and supervision. why the fuck do you think that's ridiculous? your comparison makes no sense whatsoever.
I mean, Iâm not sure how to explain reading to you, but I didnât mention toddlers once. You came up with toddlers, all on your own, and now youâre running to tell me that it doesnât make sense. I know that. Thatâs why I didnât say it. Youâre having a go at me for a point that you yourself came up with. You made up words in my mouth, and now youâre wetting yourself because the words donât make sense with what Iâm saying. Which is because I didnât say them. Blink twice if any of this is sinking in...
Now please find someone else to explain common decency to you, because rushing to tell someone âoh my god youâre so stupid, why the fuck do you think thatâs ridiculousâ behind a mask of anonymity is a pretty awful way to conduct yourself in any case (and then itâs just especially embarrassing for you when youâre wrong). I can only hope you become more mature with age, but in the meantime perhaps you can find an adult to provide you with monitoring and supervision of your own.

Ah yes, letâs let this species cause mass extinctions of local birds in areas theyâre not from while letting them drink antifreeze from puddles and climb into car engines and frolic with coyotes, thatâll make them happy
>mass extinction of local birds
Fucking lol
I cannot fathom why you would find it ridiculous that introducing millions of non-native, invasive predators into almost every single country when they have no natural predators just might have an impact on local animals. It is common sense, and conservationists have been telling us for years that cats are one of the leading drivers of extinction in wild birds and small fauna. On the list of predators posing the highest risk to native species, cats rank second, contributing towards the extinction of 63 separate species. You may find it funny that cute, fuzzy little cats pose a threat to wild animals, but the problems they cause for native species is well documented.
I literally work at a cat hospital and let me just say, if people stopped letting their cats outside I think weâd only get half as many patients as we do now. Like I canât stress this enough, you are putting your cat at risk by letting it outdoors. I canât stop you from doing what you want, but donât get angry at us when you come into the clinic with a sick/injured/dead cat and we tell you itâs because you let it outside.
I literally work at a hospital and let me just say, if people stopped letting their kids out of the house I think weâd only get half as many patients as we do now. Like I canât stress this enough, you are putting your kid at risk by letting it outdoors. Hey if youâre just letting your children run out into the streets unattended then I think we got a different problem here
lmao this rando is trying to compare cats to childrenwhen cats learn to look both ways before crossing the street then maybe iâll consider your argument
It was in part to demonstrate how ridiculous it was for earlier replies to equate cats to canaries, or to dogs. You could argue cats are a lot more like children than canaries.
Cats are largely independent, intelligent creatures and are perfectly capable of surviving without being shut in a padded room. I have owned cats for 25 years and yes, they learn how to cross the road. They know to avoid cars. Like children, cats are at most risk when theyâre young and still learning, which is why you donât let them out until theyâre old enough. Itâs not like letting young children out unattended, itâs like letting your 12+ year old go and play in the park with their friends. They can look after themselves and find their way home.
The comment above suggests that people are coming to the hospital with injured cats and your reaction, rather than human empathy, is to have a go at them and saying it is their fault for not shutting them in a cupboard their whole lives. Thatâs sociopathic, and I hope you arenât actually treating people in such a cold way.
Itâs only around busy roads, where cars are going at top speed, that theyâre in real danger, which is why I wouldnât advocate owning a cat in such areas: these things depend, which is why the above commenter said if your living situation allows and was mocked for it.Â
But I was just demonstrating that you could make the above case for anything. There is always a risk to the people you love, and so thereâs a temptation to over-coddle your children/cats and suffocate them and not let them live. Does that reduce the risk of physical harm? Of course it does - but it hurts them psychologically instead. Thatâs a harmful, obsessive, jealous love. If you truly love them, you have to let them be themselves.Â
âŚ.anyways
No, we donât âhave a goâ at clients bringing in their cats, and we do in fact show them empathy. However, it is our job to inform them about the details of their condition, causes, and how to prevent further incidents. And the only solution to the majority of these issues is to simply not let the cat outdoors, or to have an enclosure for them. We care very deeply about all our patients, so donât go throwing the term âsociopathâ at us for doing our jobs.
Also, cats really arenât like kids. They just arenât. Theyâre a completely separate species with different behaviours and ways of thinking. And sure, cats are rather âindependentâ compared to a lot of other animals, but that doesnât ignore the fact that human society poses a huge threat to their safety and well-being. Iâm glad youâve managed to keep so many healthy cats during your lifetime, and itâs obvious the conditions you live in are ideal for them, but not everyone is quite so lucky. You said it yourself, cats shouldnât be outside near streets or cars in general. Thatâs why the people who live in suburban areas are encouraged to keep their cats inside.
I wonât get into all the other reasons why having an outdoor cat isnât the optimal way to care for them, since so many other commenters have been providing exellent information (with sources!), but I will tell you that it isnât âabusiveâ or âmentally scarringâ to keep a cat inside. I think the reason you canât see that is because you have a personified image of cats in your mind, which I canât change. Like I said in my original comment, I canât stop you (or anyone) from doing what you want.
All I can do is inform you of the risks youâre taking, give an informed opinion, and let the rest be. Good day.
It sounds like we're largely in agreement. I live in a country, a continent, where about 90% of people let their cats outside. It is accepted as what is natural and healthy for cats. This post was a blanket DON'T LET YOUR CAT OUTSIDE and villifying people who do, so you will appreciate that didn't seem fair at all.
I agree that my living situation is good for keeping free cats, and people who live on busy roads shouldn't. That's why the person higher up the thread who I agreed with said 'if your living situation allows it', which people then mocked, equating cats to canaries.
I also don't think cats are children. I respect cats as independent, intelligent, outdoor animals. Many people see their cats as babies they need to coddle, and my point is that this isn't healthy. They need to be allowed to be animals. It's been bemusing to get so many 'cats aren't toddlers' abusive messages from... the people who are treating their cats like toddlers. I treat mine as adult cats.
The second reason it's bemusing is that I never said that cats were toddlers. I wrote about kids being allowed outside to play, so obviously I am talking about kids who are of an age to be allowed outside to play! It is wild that anyone could see that and instantly assume with 100% conviction that I must be specifically talking about toddlers. If I wanted to talk specifically about toddlers, I would have said... toddlers.
The people spewing venom about it drew that assumption on their own. They are harassing me for a point that they invented for themselves. I was talking about kids who are old enough to play outside, and that was just to demonstrate that there is more to love than keeping something from danger. That's a very simplified and possessive approach.
Some parents coddle their children (I was talking 12+ here) and never let them go out with friends etc under the guise of being afraid of them coming to harm, but that's not necessarily what's best for the kid. The point is that the same applies to pets. You can't just say keeping cats shut indoors has less risk of car accidents and is therefore better for them.
To take it one step further, you can be worried your cat will injure themselves around the house and keep them in a cage, but that doesn't mean you love them more just because you've eliminated risks, and it wouldn't be fair to vilify others with blanket posts DON'T LET YOUR CAT OUT OF THE CAGE, and then suggest that if someone let their cat roam the house freely and it got hurt then that was their own fault. That's not fair, because love isn't so one dimensional as removing all risk, if that means removing other parts of life as well.
That's it. That's the point that I have spent the last 12 hours getting constantly harassed for, by people who made up their own interpretation of what I was saying. I hope you have a good day too.

Do you let your small child outside for hours without supervision or something? Because thatâs fucked up. You donât let a preschool kid out for 12 hours or longer. Do you let them also travel right out of town and into the mountains? Because some cats have been GPS tracked and they walk miles every single night, and one was shown to walk right into the middle of nowhere before they decided to circle back around.
Your little switcharoo with human children is dumb and doesnât work. Cats arenât children, and even if they were, we donât treat our kids like people treat outside cats.
Where did anyone say anything about pre-school?
Apologies, you missed the original post (http://adhoption.tumblr.com/post/181719068575/acti-veg-perpetual-levity) because I was forced onto a side-blog - the kid comparison was in part to demonstrate how ridiculous it was for earlier replies to equate cats to canaries, or to dogs. You could argue cats are a lot more like children than canaries.
Cats are largely independent, intelligent creatures and are perfectly capable of surviving without being shut in a padded room. I have owned cats for 25 years and they learn how to cross the road. Then itâs not like letting young children out unattended, itâs like letting your 12+ year old go and play in the park with their friends.Â
As you say, cats can walk for miles, look after themselves and find their way safely home. Can a pre-school kid do that? No, so why are we suddenly shifting the comparison to pre-school? Cats are nowhere near as dependent, and so if thereâs a comparison itâs with much older children/teenagers who can similarly be trusted to go out and come back for themselves.
But I was also just demonstrating that you could make the above case for anything. There is always a risk to the people you love, and so thereâs a temptation to over-coddle your children/cats and suffocate them and not let them live. Does that reduce the risk of physical harm? Shutting your kid in a padded cell and never letting them be themselves is not caring for them, itâs suffocating them. Donât confuse that for love.
