okay so I saw that one trailer for the new Scary Movie where someone gets stabbed, someone else shouts “he stabbed her!” And they go “eRm, My PrOnOuNs ArE tHeY/tHeM”, and I instantly cringed, so here’s a marginally better pitch for the joke

We establish earlier at some point that this character is nonbinary (could be other people using they/them for longer lasting character, or just a pin or something for a red shirt type character). Maybe we also establish that people refer to the murder dude as a they cause they have a mask on. Then, rather than character getting stabbed, they get slashed across the chest. Same witness shouts ‘he stabbed her!’. But then, character shakes their head, points at murder dude, the slash wound, and themself, and says, “no… they slashed them…”

and then they die immediately after.
