Chesapeake Ripper

The fallout from the "hall pass" incident had left the air between you thick with a tension that was impossible to ignore. Walking onto the set that afternoon felt like stepping into a different reality. The untouchable, legendary Robert Downey Jr. had been yours just hours before. A scenario so surreal it defied your wildest dreams. It was an honor, certainly, but an honor that came with a heavy side of vertigo.

Watching him now, you were struck by his effortless professionalism. From the sidelines, you observed him slipping in and out of character, embodying Tony Stark with a precision that made it easy for everyone else to forget the man beneath. 

But you couldn’t. 

You could still feel the phantom heat of him, a secret weight that made your heart hammer against your ribs every time his eyes flickered in your direction between takes.

When a break was finally called, you stepped onto the bustling set, your kit in hand to touch up the prosthetic bruise you’d painstakingly applied earlier.

"You really need to stop staring," you murmured, leaning in close so only he could hear.

Robert let out a low, guttural laugh that vibrated in his chest. "Kind of hard to look away when I know your head is in the exact same place as mine."

You bit your lip, struggling to maintain a neutral "professional" expression while your pulse raced. "You—"

Whatever retort you had planned was cut short by his PA trotting over. "Hey, Rob? Susan’s on the line. She said it’s regarding the anniversary plans."

Robert’s entire face transformed. A genuine, warm smile broke across his features. "Right. This one is important, a big milestone, you know." He shot you a pointed, knowing look that sent a fresh wave of heat to your cheeks before he turned to walk toward his chair, already greeting his wife with a familiar "Hey, honey."

You stood frozen, watching him from a distance. You studied the way his expression animated, the way he laughed at something she said. It was confusing, watching the "adoring husband" persona align so perfectly with the man who had just pinned you to a vanity.

A few minutes later, he returned. He looked invigorated, a triumphant spark in his eyes that only deepened your bewilderment.

"Someone wants to talk to you," he said, breaking into your thoughts.

You blinked, looking down at the phone he was holding out to you. "Why would she...? Robert, I don't think—"

"Just talk to her," he urged, his voice soft but encouraging. "I promise, it’s worth it."

Hesitantly, you took the device. The weight of it felt monumental. You pressed it to your ear, your voice barely a whisper as you greeted the woman on the other end.

Susan’s voice was calm, composed, and surprisingly warm. She started by sincerely thanking you for taking such good care of Robert on these long, grueling shoot days.

Then, she got down to business.

"Look," she said, her tone shifting into that of a practical executive. "Between running the production company and managing the kids’ schedules, I simply can't be traveling back and forth to Georgia every time he’s filming. So, here’s the deal. We’ve known you for a long time; you’re a fixture in the crew, and more importantly, we trust you."

There was a brief pause, the kind of silence that usually preceded a massive career opportunity, but this was different.

"Bobby needs a companion, a plaything, if you will, when he’s away on location," Susan continued effortlessly. "And according to him, you happen to be his absolute favorite. I’d like to keep it that way."

The silence on the line was deafening, broken only by the distant clapperboard snapping shut on set. You stood there, phone pressed to your ear, feeling like the floor of the soundstage had suddenly turned into open air.

"I... I don't know what to say, Mrs. Downey," you managed to stammer, your eyes darting to Robert. He was leaning against a gear crate a few feet away, watching you with an unreadable expression, his arms crossed over the chest of his tactical Stark vest.

"You don't have to say anything right now," Susan replied, her voice remarkably level-headed. "But let’s be realists. This industry is lonely, and Robert is... well, he’s Robert. I’d rather it be with someone who is basically part of the family, someone who respects the boundaries of our marriage as much as we do. It’s a position of trust. Think of it as an extension of your Marvel contract, but only with much better perks.”

She hung up after a polite goodbye, leaving the dial tone humming in your ear. You slowly lowered the phone, staring at the blank screen as if it held the secrets to the universe.

Robert stepped closer, closing the gap until you could smell the faint scent of his cologne. He reached out, his fingers brushing against yours as he took the phone back.

"She has a way of being very persuasive, doesn't she?" he asked softly.

"She called me a 'plaything', Robert," you whispered, the word tasting strange on your tongue. "And she thanked me. How is this real?”

"It’s real because we’ve made it real," he said, his voice dropping into that grounding, authoritative tone. He took a step into your personal space, shielding you from the view of the wandering crew members. "It’s not about being a 'thing,' sweetheart. It’s about being the person who keeps me sane when the cameras stop rolling. She trusts you to keep me happy, and I trust you to... well, keep doing exactly what you did this morning.”

He reached out, his thumb grazing your lower lip, tracing the spot you had been nervously biting. The touch was possessive, a silent claim that backed up everything Susan had just proposed.

"So," he murmured, his eyes searching yours, "are you going to be a good professional and follow the new terms of your employment? Or do I need to convince you some more?”

Before you could answer, the first AD yelled, "Picture's up! Everyone, clear the frame!”

Robert gave you one last, lingering look that promised what the night held before turning on a dime and stepping back into the light of the scene, leaving you standing in the shadows of the rafters, your heart racing with the realization that your life had just changed forever.
