After an almost two year break, the Modern AU Phrack you never knew you needed, and which has now been well and truly overtaken by Real Life Events, returns!

I’m so, so sorry that this has taken as long as it has. I slightly lost my mojo, then I started an MA, and let me tell you, that is *intense*. As I upload this chapter, I have four weeks until my Dissertation is due in, so naturally, the muse is back with a mighty vengeance, for any piece of writing that *isn’t* 12,000 words about Representation in Australian Performance and Theatre (Dissertation topic). 

There is, obviously, more of this to come, which is at various levels of being sketched out. I’ll try to add the next one when I can, although my ‘sketch’ for that is much briefer than I perhaps thought it was.

Phryne gasped as a hand reached out of the alcove she was running by, pulling her in forcefully.  She groaned as she came into contact with another body, instinctively trying to pull away as whoever she had crashed into attempted to subdue her.  A strong pair of hands closed around her wrists, pulling her in even closer.

“Phryne, it’s me, it’s Jack.”

It took the words a moment to sink in, but as they did, Phryne stopped struggling.  Her breathing was a little ragged from running, and she was acutely aware of how close together she and Jack were standing in the tight space.

“It’s alright, we’re safe here.  Are you alright?”

Phryne nodded.

“Not a scratch on me.”

Jack raised an eyebrow, pointedly tightening his grip on her wrists.

“Are you sure?  Your pulse is racing.”

Phryne averted her gaze, making a show of glancing over her shoulder for signs of the men who’d been pursuing her.

“Is it?  I hadn’t noticed.”

Jack held on for a little while longer, pulling her even closer as hurried footsteps sounded nearer to them.  He felt her heart rate respond to his proximity and it was all he could do not to smile smugly knowing he was unsettling her.  It was a treat seeing the unflappable Phryne Fisher come undone a little and in spite of their situation he hoped he’d get another chance to throw her off-kilter again very soon.

The footsteps faded into the distance again and Jack reluctantly pulled away, dropping her wrists and peeking out of the alcove.  He looked both ways for signs of trouble and glanced over his shoulder when he found none.

“The coast is clear,” he announced.  “Let’s move before they come back.”

Phryne reached out and grasped his hand, and he’d be a liar if he said his own heart didn’t start beating just a little bit faster at that.

Summary: Jack confronts Victoria about her collaboration with his murder victim.

Tomorrow, actually, it will have been three years from my suicide attempt and subsequent hospitalization. 

I’ll be three years clean from cutting. 

Three moves, three states, two doc programs, four therapists, two psychiatrists, and one visit to crisis counseling.

It feels like a huge amount of time and also none at all. Because three years is almost half the time I’ve been a pseudo-adult, but it’s also such a small portion of the years I have ahead of me.
