me: WHY is no one talking about this*
*a scene from a tv show that has been off the air for uhhh. almost twenty years?? that can't be right. that can't possibly be right. leverage can't be eighteen years old, can it? what do you mean it is??? shit. fk man i'm turning to dust
"The Blue Line Job" doodles
I love how Leverage went
Here's the cat burglar. She wears comfy clothes and has zero social skills. She has sex appeal but only if you're into a very specific type of woman, and crucially she has zero idea she has it. She probably doesn't know what an innuendo is.
Here's the hacker. He's a Black nerd, and also the most moral character of the bunch. He's a nerd but also not socially awkward; in fact, he's the second best at grifting, right after the person who's been doing it for decades.
Here's the muscle. In his heart of hearts, he is a chef. He is tough and manly but he uses that to look out for the working class and children and everyone else the system leaves behind. He's feared by politicians and he reminds his friend to tip the delivery person.
Here's the femme fatale. She's over forty years old, and she's the one seducing the mark. She's the heart of the team. Her calling is to be a director. She loves attending her own funeral.
Here's the mastermind. He's the only one who doesn't start out as a career criminal. He manipulates his own crew, kills two people after promising them he won't, and takes deals behind their back. He was in seminary school.
Also, here's their nemesis. He's Mark Sheppard.

leverage truly has some of the most random side plots. sophie can't stand midwestern food until she gets hungry enough to understand the appeal of pork rinds. parker gets put on antidepressants and experiences one episode of being sociable and happy. parker overcomes her fear of horses which she has because as a child she witnessed a horse beat a clown to death (to be clear, a murder committed by a man dressed as a horse, not an accident involving a real horse). actually parker mostly just seems to be experiencing different emotional stakes than everyone else
We, as a Fandom, don't talk nearly enough about Hardison's abandonment issues and how he uses gifts as a way to try and get people to stay. Or how he tries to put down as many roots as possible to try and create a home even if he knows it wouldn't be permanent. Honestly, I find it speaks a lot about his character with how he cycles through love languages but constantly goes back to words of affirmation and gift giving.
I'd love to explore more about how Parker and Eliot deal with his issues, especially since he's the voice of reason and the one who will give up everything he owns so his partners are happy. I wish there were more Hardison based fanfics. 😕
Leverage S04E13 The Girls Night Out Job.
So it’s after The Stork Job and they’re just back from Belgrade and Hardison finds Eliot in the kitchen at the office, and he knew Eliot could cook, is reminded of it now by the rich smell of an entire vat of bolognese on the stove, but he didn’t know he baked.
And he’s also just now learning that Eliot has at some point lost his mind, because there’s an industrial quantity of cookie dough rolled into balls on a tray on the counter, along with a cooling pan of brownies and a batch of cupcakes that Eliot is furiously decorating.
‘Are we… hosting someone?’ Hardison asks, hovering in the doorway.
Eliot doesn’t answer the question but rather informs him, nodding at the cookie dough, ‘I’m gonna freeze those. Same with the sauce; gonna freeze it in portions so people just gotta heat it and boil some pasta.’ He holds up a box of freezer bags. ‘You wanna be helpful, you can divide this up for me.’
‘Hey, I never said anything about wanting to be helpful,’ Hardison objects, but comes and takes the box from him. ‘Seriously, what’s the occasion?’
‘You all eat like damn teenagers,’ Eliot says, ‘and I can’t cook after every job.’
That’s… fair. The bakery’s-worth of treats feels like it’s encouraging rather than staving off the teenage diet, but Hardison’s very much not inclined to ask further questions.
So really, Eliot chooses to give himself away. ‘You hear what Parker was saying?’ he asks, intensely focused on creating a perfect spiral on the cupcake in front of him.
Hardison ladles sauce into a freezer bag and ties it, then reaches out to snag a ball of cookie dough. ‘When?’
Eliot yanks the tray out of his reach, glaring. ‘I said they’re for freezing!’
‘Oh no,’ Hardison says, biting into the dough. ‘We may not have enough to see out the decade. What’d Parker say?’
‘About, uh.’ Eliot pauses, piping a delicate flower onto the next cupcake. ‘In the briefing. About knowing that kid was orphaned.’
‘Yeah, man, I think this one kinda hit close to home,’ Hardison says, though exactly how close, he isn’t about to share. ‘We might wanna—’
And then he breaks off, taking in the spread—feast, really—in front of them, as he remembers exactly what Parker said.
He’s hoarding food.
Right.
‘Oh, I get it,’ Hardison says, smile spreading across his face, warm, warm feeling spreading through his chest. ‘You’re a softie.’
Eliot’s murderous look is only slightly undercut by the piping bag full of pink frosting in his hands, but he doesn’t deny the obvious: as long as he has any say in it, Parker’s never going to feel so much as a little snacky without having food immediately available to her.
And Hardison already likes Eliot, might even be crushing on him a little. But right then he thinks, yeah. I could fall in love with you.
‘Hey,’ he says, pointing at the cupcake. ‘Will you teach me how to do those flower things?’
‘Fine,’ Eliot says.
‘And Parker likes sprinkles,’ Hardison adds.
Eliot ducks his head, but not in time for Hardison to miss his smile. ‘Top right cupboard,’ Eliot says, and moves over to make space next to him at the counter.

Submitted propaganda under the cut:
anyway I was having this very vivid and unaccountably funny dream about what I suppose you would call a heist crew, except their MO was less about stealing and more about breaking into rich shitheads' houses to throw absolute ragers and trash the place and then disappear into the night. it was all very sleek and admittedly even sexy but the main thing I remember about this dream is that the leader of the group, who's exactly the kind of smooth young hotshot you think he is, was always in the process of getting spectacularly dumped at these parties. always a different woman. months of planning and stress and then when he should be in his element kicking back, accepting congratulations on all sides, man of the hour, he's getting dumped. again. and his whole crew is watching with a very low amount of sympathy because they love the guy but ooooh they know better than anyone that he deserves this. what the fuck was my subconscious cooking with this.

I watched Leverage for the first time way too young, and a lot of things went over my head. I just rewatched "The Future Job" from Leverage and something about this scene just hit me.
#I think another good one for this sentiment is 'low low price job' #where it's unambiguous that the walmart stand-in is evil #(killing mom-and-pop stores; union busting; emotional manipulation of employees; so on and so forth) #but by having Hardison say those low prices were the only way nana was able to put food on the table #the writers are saying: 'you aren't evil for having to shop here or work here #we understand it's tough out there#we understand that you're cogs in a wicked machine you never signed up to be a part of #capitalism chews us all up and spits us all out and we're sorry about that #but let's live in a 42-minute fantasy where we can bite back' (via @wordybee)
Working my way through Leverage for the first time and given how effortlessly all of them can jump into character out of nowhere, I feel like it raises the question “Could any improv group become effective con men and, if so, how long would it take for them to realize that?”
