Happiest Season is a slayer of lesbian movie tropes....

1. That ‘any gay will do’ - had your heart broken? Can’t find a SO in your own town... just ask someone to set you up with ANY other gay & HEY PRESTO!! It’s u-haul city by lunch time... Riley is fabulous but, for Abby, Harper is her person & no one (not even Harper herself) can stop that love.

2. That all the damage done, when ppl feel the pressure of not coming out, is done from the outside in... it’s time society saw the pain that is done BY us to ourselves & each other. Happiest Season expertly shows the self loathing, pain & desperation that living in the closet can cause. Bc the audience only sees Abby’s POV & Kristen Stewart brings such love & goofy sweetness to the role even straight audiences want to see Abby have a happy ending. The movie has also resonated with a lot of straight ppl bc it cleverly says ‘Harper acts like this bc of society’ without saying to them ‘this is your fault’.

3. That ppl get to comment on how we come out. It’s bad enough that straight ppl have been giving us ‘advice’ through movies for a couple of decades but now we get told ‘don’t tell your Dad’ or ‘can you just keep it quiet’ ... we’ve always been told by the straight community how we should (or shouldn’t) come out.

THE message from Happiest Season is this, that there are as many different coming out stories as there are ppl coming out (or staying closeted).

Some do it well & some don’t.

The important message to send out is that we should all try to be Riley & John, not waiting to pounce on someone else’s SO (the minute their relationship looks rocky) but instead waiting to stand up & support them.

Even when they act like idiots & risk losing the love of their lives...
