From last week. Was in NYC for work. Yes, during the World Cup.
Walking along a street in the Lower East Side of NYC one evening. I see a guy a hundred yards in front standing outside a pub. “I know that guys face, why do I know it?” as I pass him I still can’t place him but I half clock the fitba too he’s wearing, seems familiar as well.
Get to the bottom of the street on what started as genuinely a random wander before finding where folk were already watching the England match. I turn back and head back to where the guy was standing and it hits me. He’s the boyfriend of someone I knew from this damn hellsite OVER A DECADE AGO!
Fuck it. I reach the pub and decide “if it’s not this person, I’ll never see whoever it is again, minimal embarrassment”. So I head in.
And sure enough, there was @darktimesandshadowscast sitting on a barstool beside her boyfriend who I’d only ever seen on tumblr photos. I should note, I’ve NEVER physically met Siobhan IRL before. Met her twin once in 2013!
We chatted, shot the shit, and I departed after Greg generously said he’d pay for my beer, and Siobhan took photographic evidence we actually met.
Randomly bump into an old tumblr mutual, I hadn’t interacted with in a good decade, in a random Lower East Side pub when I wasn’t even in the States for the World Cup!
