Eudora

Pesticides! That makes perfect sense! You know so many things. Our town would be so easy to experiment on, nobody would notice if we all disappeared. Do the small towns in movies ever find a way to fight back before they all die? What if we created, like, an army, and a secret underground base?

…Maybe there’s somethin’ in the water? Or, like, the air? I don’t know what’s the normal reason for mass hallucination stuff… Er… or whatever you’d call this…

Bio: Almost everyone in town knows about Eudora. Or at least they know of her, and her condition. Diagnosed with narcolepsy as a child, most people have been warned to make sure she doesn’t hit her head on anything sharp if she suddenly conks out in the middle of a sentence, or to gently try to help her sit or lie down if she begins sleepwalking. She’s always on the sidelines, usually too drowsy to do much physical activity. Sometimes, it’s hard to tell if she’s actually awake or not. When she’s awake, she doesn’t talk or move around much, often causing confusion as to whether she’s actually conscious. However, when she sleeps, she seems more awake than ever. She’ll get up and walk away at a moments notice, and she’s been told her sleeping self is quite chatty. She can have entire conversations, only to wake up halfway through and ask whoever she’s speaking to what she’s doing here and if they know how to get back home. Even though she’s lived in Pageson her whole life, and the town itself is miniscule, she’s almost always lost. Whether for sleepwalking to places she doesn’t recognise, or just her poor sense of direction, it seems she’s always wandering around, just trying to find her way home. For this reason she usually has her parents or friends two steps behind. She’s torn between feeling coddled and pitied, and being glad she has a little help. She’s always been considered a bit of an oddball, and a laughingstock at school - she’s sure you’ve seen the video of her sleepwalking right into traffic. Everyone in Pageson has. (Luckily, the driver slammed on the brakes in the nick of time.) While most people agree that it was not funny and definitely not okay to post it, those that do find it amusing are a very vocal minority. Even without the video, she’s infamous for her disconjointed thoughts, random sleepy mumbles, and strange, out-of-place conversation starters, all of which make her sound off her rocker. Not helping matters are her struggles in school. While Eudora is very creative, and an excellent chef (her scones and muffins are to die for), she’s never been smart in the academic sense, or the social sense. Both homework and making friends are a challenge for her, and even she has to admit it’s a bit of a miracle that she hasn’t been asked to repeat a grade.

Relationships:

Harry March: Harry’s been a close friend of Eudora’s for years. They’ve taken Sunday School classes together since they were toddlers, and both their families are very close. Harry was one of the only kids who’d bother with Eudora, sitting quietly with her even after she’d fall asleep. He’d bring her blankets and soft things, and made sure no one else bothered her while she rested. He’s grown up as something of her protector, always staying with her to listen to her sleepy mumbles about her happy dreams, and keeping watch over her when she passes out. He even gets up early every morning so he can walk all the way to her house and help get her to school, taking care that she doesn’t trip, or wander into traffic, or doze off on the sidewalk. She’s like the little sister he never had, and he’s a very good big brother. Even though he’s usually loud and hyperactive, around Eudora he becomes very quiet and gentle. They’re oddballs together, and he’s one of the few people who’s seen the sweet personality behind her sleepy mumbles. Unfortunately, while he still views her as a sister, she does… not view him as a brother anymore. Not that he’s noticed. Eudora’s tried everything from using makeup to make herself look pretty to baking him cookies for no reason, but he either doesn’t notice or views it all as platonic.

Regina Love: The teachers at Pageson High often have their patience tested by Eudora, who’s always sleeping through class whether she wants to or not, but Mrs. Love, the government teacher, is a bully through and through. Regina is a tyrant to all of her students, but Harry and Eudora (and now their new friend Allison) get it even worse than everyone else. It’s easy to explain with she can’t stand Harry and Allison. She isn’t a fan of their quirky natures, and doesn’t appreciate their antics. They ask too many questions, they move too much in class, they doodle too much while taking notes… everything about them seems to annoy her. But Regina seems to take Eudora’s disorder as a personal offense, as if Eudora is going out of her way to fall asleep in the hallway just to annoy her. She goes out of her way to torment Eudora, screaming at her until she cries and bullying her in front of the whole class. Eudora will do anything from faking sick to offering to do an independent study to get out of Regina’s class, but nothing works. Pageson High is too short on staffing to fire her, so the best Eudora can hope for is that someone else will get Regina’s attention that day, or another teacher will hear the screaming and come in to rescue her.

Allison Kingsley: Allison is a new student at Pageson High, having just moved here from London. Eudora bumped into Allison on Allison’s very first day in town. Quite literally. Even though it was clearly Eudora’s fault, Allison was kind enough to pick her off the sidewalk and offer to walk her home. Eudora doesn’t remember much of the incident, having been unconscious for most of it, but she likes to think they had a good walk together, and talked about lots of wonderful things. Harry and Eudora have since formally welcomed Allison into their friend group, after Allison snapped at Regina for yelling at Eudora, and the three of them have been peas in a pod ever since. Allison considers them both crazy and weird, but also interesting, and she admires their authenticity. Eudora has never had a female friend before, and appreciates Allison’s gentle companionship. Allison can tell Eudora pines for Harry, but doesn’t bring it up for fear of embarrassing her or getting in the way. Allison helps Eudora with her homework, while Eudora helps Allison with navigating Pageson. It’s a decent trade-off.
