Once you've learned the spot the historical signposts, it's interesting how many "generically medieval" fantasy settings manage to miss the actual medieval period on both ends. They've got the Roman Empire rubbing shoulders with the German Renaissance, skipping directly from the year 500 to the year 1500 with nothing in between!

I had an appointment with my doctor today, and for the full twenty-odd minutes I was sitting in the waiting room they had a song on loop whose chorus was just someone repeatedly chanting the phrase "run from the sunlight, Dracula". I think this experience has altered my brain chemistry.

I get the distaste for the dumbest 25% of them, but I do think powerscaling and whoWouldWin type discussions are perfectly valid forms of engaging with media. Certainly at least as deep if we compare to, say, shippers pushing everything into the same few pairings or people interpreting "themes" that are just starting with a conclusion and working backwards

Also the average discussion in these settings is at least trying to make arguments based on material and mechanical factors, whereas the alternative tends to be "My Blorbo would win because she's my favorite :)"
