A Misunderstanding: The Aftermath
A/N: I have no excuse :|
^/----^/----^/----^/----^/----^/----^/----^/----^/----^/----^/
The rumor returns from the Land of Tea before Minato does.
It arrives folded inside official correspondence, stamped with three seals and addressed in an elegant hand to the Fourth Hokage and his esteemed heir, Lord Kakashi. By the time the portrait follows - a tasteful rendering of Minato and Kakashi beneath a plum tree, standing shoulder to shoulder while pale blossoms drift around them - the misunderstanding has already rooted itself in Konohaβs markets, where facts are generally treated as the less entertaining cousins of gossip.
The first merchant to act upon it is an elderly woman who sells grilled rice cakes near the mission office.
Kakashi stops at her stall on the way home from training, damp from the afternoon heat and carrying a packet of replacement wire beneath one arm. The air above the brazier is sweet with soy glaze and smoke. Cicadas scream from the trees with the exhausted fury of creatures personally offended by summer.
The woman takes one look at him, then at the official parcel bearing the Hokageβs seal.
Her face brightens.
βLord Kakashi.β
Kakashi pauses. He has been called many things in his fourteen years. Prodigy. JΕnin. White Fangβs son. A menace (usually by Obito). Lord Kakashi remains new enough to be interesting.
βYes?β
She selects the largest rice cake from the grill and wraps it in paper.
βFor the Hokageβs boy.β
Kakashi looks at the rice cake.
Then at her.
There is, technically, a moment in which the truth might still be rescued.
Naturally, it passes.
βHow much?β he asks.
βFamily rate.β
The family rate, Kakashi discovers, is free. He accepts the rice cake with the solemnity of a diplomat receiving tribute. The woman beams after him as he walks away, smoke curling beneath the awning and the parcel tucked securely beneath his arm.
Kakashi takes one bite.
He stops. The glaze is still warm, crisp at the edges and sticky enough to catch against his mask. Behind him, coins clink into a wooden box. The market moves around the stall in its usual bright disorder: vegetables arranged beneath damp cloths, sandals striking stone, merchants calling over one another as if volume were a recognized form of competitive advantage.
Kakashi looks back at the woman.
βDoes the family rate apply to sweet bean dumplings?β
She gives him two.
That is how it begins. The market rumor does not spread in a straight line. It drifts, pauses to improve itself, then doubles back wearing better clothes.
Someone sees the Land of Tea portrait displayed briefly in the Hokage Tower. Someone else recognizes the green ceremonial sash Kakashi continues to wear because, according to him, silk is durable and refusing foreign gifts retroactively would be discourteous. A clerk remembers that the Land of Tea addressed him as Minatoβs heir. A baker points out that Kakashi already enters the Hokageβs home without knocking.
By the end of the week, the market has reached a version of events satisfying enough to require no further evidence.
The Fourth Hokage has adopted Hatake Kakashi in secret. The secrecy is necessary because of foreign assassins, clan politics, Kakashiβs inheritance, Minatoβs modesty, or all four at once. Nobody agrees upon the details. This does not impede certainty.
Kakashi does nothing to encourage the story. He merely begins buying his mission supplies in the market rather than from the quartermaster. The blacksmith near the eastern wall services his kunai at what he calls the household rate. A tea seller quietly adds an extra cup to his order. The baker slips sesame buns into his bag with the instruction that one is for his father.
Minato receives none of these buns.
This is not selfishness. Kakashi simply considers it unwise to burden the Hokage with the administrative consequences of every civilian misunderstanding.

Minato just rolled his eyes. Always with the grandstanding and ominous statements, these Uchiha. Probably he should at least try to deescalate a bit, if only to avoid a brawl that would land them both in trouble - trouble that would most certainly go worse for him.
"Sure, and next time I'll sneak up behind you instead of in front. Maybe stop making threats and concentrate on... what were you doing, anyway?"
Perfect deescalation technique.
The question was just distracting enough and immediately put Sasuke on the back foot, now a bit hyper-aware of the notebook of crudely drawn doodles currently in his pocket.
"...That's...not really any of your business really..." He shifted his gaze elsewhere, not wanting to give Minato away more of a reason to continue asking.
"Look, I was just asking." Minato spread his hands in a helpless what-do-you-want-from-me gesture. Sure, he was mildly curious about whatever secret training Sasuke was clearly doing, but for once Sasuke was correct - it wasn't any of Minato's business. It was, however, a good subject to switch to that didn't involve subtly threatening each other.
"There's no need to be so hostile about it."
Mikoto stared long and hard at Minato. She knew what day tomorrow was, but her intent wasnβt to intimidate him, unlike the others. Her hands were loosely clasped in front of her, and she slowly smiled. It was a bit funny theyβd be up against each other. The annual sparring was simply for fun. Right?
βWhy would I go bother someone else when they arenβt you?β
What she said wasnβt something to be creepy about. An omen, of sorts. Minato wonβt die tomorrow, surely not - but he would be at the very top. So would she, despite everyoneβs unfavorable odds against her. But she had been trained religiously by one certain man.
β..I have a bad feeling about tomorrow, Mina.β

Death was always around the corner. Minato thought momentarily of Jiraiya, of his parents, and of comrades he'd met that faced it every day patrolling borders that might flare into violence from their mere presence. Premonitions of tragedy were ofttimes marked more on detail than gross rate of occurrence.
"I trust you, Mikoto, and I'm quite fond of things not happening to me either. " He elected to ignore not yet for the moment, though it was filed away from later. "But unless you have a specific concern..."
Reblog if you will never. Ever. Use AI in your writing.
To the people who say: "But I need to ask Chat GPT / Claude / [whatever, idk] to help me brainstorm, and get past the blank page!"
Here's some suggestions:
One: Ask one of your friends, instead. If they're also working on a story, you can return the favor.
That's how J.R.R. Tolkien made friends with C.S. Lewis. That's how Mary Shelly wrote Frankenstein (yes, she wrote it based on a dream, but she and her friends were all stuck in a rainy summer writing stories together).
Two: Call your grandma, and ask her for an idea. I'm sure she'd love to hear from you when it's not a holiday or her birthday.
Even if she gives you an idea that you know is all wrong, the reasons why it's wrong that spring to mind immediately, will help you figure out what's right.
Three: (if you don't have a grandma to give you wrong answers) Personify that Inner Critic in your head, and write down all the things it says about how your story is stupid. Then, write down your answers arguing back about why your story is a good idea.
At least the page won't be blank, anymore. And you can recycle your Inner Critic and make it into your story's villain.
There is zero reason on this, Our Earth, to ever use a plagiarism machine.
Period.

Okay.
Take the energy of that feeling, and channel it into writing your next draft.
I also want to amend my "Call your Grandma!" suggestion. Maybe she'll give you the perfect idea. For all you know, she could be a member of the first generation to write Kirk/Spock fanfic, back when it was distributed by the postal service.

"Perhaps lead with the bad feeling instead of 'you will be the last to die', then." Minato said as mildly as he could manage. In fairness, Mikoto was not a generally unpleasant person - perhaps the stress of competition was weighing him more than he thought. There was no need for him to be rude when a fellow student just wanted to talk.
"Have a seat, please." Minato finished the last of his lunch - actually palatable soup with noodles, a rarity in the Academy - and slid the bowl aside with one deliberate hand. "What kind of bad feeling?"

"Mikoto, you're already very scary. I'm not going to get more intimidated."
Tomorrow was the annual boys vs girls sparring tournament in the Academy, and as usual excitement was building to a fever pitch. The lines had been drawn over a month ago, the main players were well known, and the taunting and baiting just would. Not. Stop.
Minato had carved a name for himself with strategy, jutsu no-one else could perform, and his association with one of the Sannin. As much as he tried to avoid it, he was a solid target for the opposite team's star players.
Including the admittedly-scary Mikoto. Minato's feeling of intimidation were not unfounded; Mikoto might be the scariest student on the opposing team, except possibly Kushina.
"If you could go bother someone else, that'd be delightful."
Sasuke was dialed in, focused intently on the notebook in front of him, the sound of a pencil tip scratching along the paper. He was trying something that caught his attention but was still a woeful beginner at.
He paused to stare at his work, a crudely drawn tree with branches that seemed to just explode out of the trunk. He blinked as he stared before nodding slowly.
"...not too bad..."
His analysis was broken by the sound of a crunching leaf underfoot. He closed his eyes as he closed the notebook with one hand.
"Whoever is trying to sneak up on me better have a good reason."

Three Legendary Sannin
[ πππππ ] My muse brushes a strand of hair out of your museβs face. (Kushina)
"'Shina, it's fine." Minato's hair was an untamable mess at the best of times. After a week-long patrol in enemy territory, it was so dusty Minato might have gone grey early and refused to stay out of his eyes regardless of how much he pushed at it or tried to tie it up.
Hardly the look one wanted to have when reporting in to the wife of the first Hokage, the venerable Mito Uzumaki, but Minato had learned she would see straight through any artifice of appearance anyway.
The next time Kushina moved to brush his face clear, he caught her wrist - as gently as possible, of course, not that she couldn't have snapped his wrist if she'd tried.
"Really, it's fine. I'm fine."
