The reason commercial flight is so many orders of magnitude safer than any other form of transportation is because after every accident and incident, an independent regulatory body investigated it with the express goal of figuring out exactly what happened, why, and how to prevent the same thing from ever happening againānot to root out which person deserved the blame or the liability.
It's a simple, shockingly effective idea. It's also worlds away from how most people approach their own mistakes and the mistakes of others.

Everyone else seems to really like their houses though, and you canāt see inside of them, so you just assume that youāre being weird.
And then you hear about the construction project thatās happening down the road. And you didnāt know that was an option. You can justā¦fix your house? It can be better? You donāt have to live with the horrible lighting and weird furniture?
But other people scoff at the construction. They complain about the noise. āWhy canāt they just be happy? The plumbing is great and the furniture is so comfortable! Why would you change it? And why do we have to deal with all their issues anyways? They could just do it quietly, away from us!ā And you thought everyone hated their houses, at least a little. And itās so much work to renovate. Itās fine in your house. It sucks, but itās fine.
Then one day you try putting up a new painting. Something small. Just for you. Just to try it. And it feels like you. It feels right. And you didnāt know anything felt that good, ever. So you start to do more. And more. And eventually you might even start construction. And itās inconvenient, and loud, and people complain, but you didnāt know that it could feel good to go home.
And then, one day, your renovations are done. And you get to have a home like everyone else. And that joy you felt looking at that painting? Itās everywhere now. And itās normal.
Itās hard to build the home for your soul all on your own. But itās worth it. Itās so worth it

listen to me, this is so so important: you've gotta get used to really giving it your 60% as a default. like don't half-ass it necessarily but try not to go over 70% or so of an ass. you'll feel better and live a happier more fulfilled life, and on the rare occasions where you do need to lock the fuck in you'll be able to pull off bullshit that the sad miserable wretches giving it their 100% can never dream off, because they're busy draining themselves dry and you have energy reserves to spare.

I highly recommend Forvo.com, the website where native speakers of a language contribute their time and voices to read words and names in their own language. It is a fantastic way to expand your world, open up your ears, and it's way more likely to nab a hit than just googling.

to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube
they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!
i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies

where i am, a box fan and the filters run about $20 each, so if $100 is too much of a stretch at the moment, get the fan and one filter. tape the filter to the intake side of the fan, all the way around. this is also good if your space is small and a 20" cube won't fit.

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
The midjourney stuff just reminds of when we were trying to find a new platform to host the ao3 donation form, and companies kept trying to tell me about all their "ai" features that would track donor engagement, and figure out the optimal pattern to email individual donors asking for follow up donations, and all the ways they suggest we manipulate people into staying on our websites. It was a great way to filter out who either wasn't listening to us when we described our ethics and donor base, or just didn't believe us.
Now granted ao3 is a unique case based on a) the amount of page views we get in any given time period and b) the fact that most donors absolutely do Not want to be identified as such anywhere, (the default "list of recent donors" module got nuked Immediately) but it surprised me some that the concept of "donors who value their privacy and would be furious at even the whiff of AI" is unique. Some of us really are just existing in different worlds.

The last part was kind of insane, honestly. When we started changing platforms for the donor database, I kept telling them that yes I was aware we already had an account for the volunteer database, and no that could not be connected to the donor database. And they said yes fine sure and then connected them anyway. And I called them back and said, excuse me, I'm confused, I can see both databases. And they said, well, yeah, but it's only you, someone has to be able to see both databases to give other users access. The other users can't see both. And I said, no, we have been asking for a completely separate database. I should not be able to see both. And they said, you are one organization, one organization can't have two databases. And I said, last year someone used our volunteer email list to commit approximately one thousand felonies. Please feel free to imagine how much worse it could have been had they had a way to use volunteers' email addresses to get their legal names. We do not want this to be something anyone can do no matter how much we trust them. Let me describe those felonies to you in more detail. And they emailed me two hours later and said, you can have two separate databases.

so in general i think the project hail mary movie managed the emotional beats better than the book, but there is one point in the story where that fact becomes so fucking funny
and it's when grace is out on the hull of the ship trying to still collect the taumoeba collector even though so many things have gone wrong (with rocky telling him no don't do that you will die we can try again later)
because in the movie that "i don't think there is gonna be a later" is representative of the huge risk they've taken on this plan, the ship is falling apart as they go, this has to be done now, and grace is proving really for the first time that he is now willing to die to make this work and save both their planets
but in the book because of time constraints and length required both he and rocky were working on making the chain for that thing and they've done nothing but make chain for like a week straight (he mentions at one point the noodles he's having for dinner are just registering to his brain as small white edible chain)
so the thoughts going through book!grace's head at that point are just "if i have to make one more length of fucking chain im gonna kill myself"
favorite thing in the whole wide world when a story is about how a typically ānegativeā trait is the one essential to saving the day. a character whose anger pushes them further than any of their kinder aspects. someone so stubborn that they cross a finish line no one else could reach. greed that becomes justification to protect people. ruthlessness that gets the job done right. the coward who becomes a hero because they were the only one with the sense not to face something deadly head on. selfishness that keeps you alive.
I love when our āworstā impulses are shown to be as important to who we are and how we handle things as the best parts of us. sometimes you donāt conquer what everyone says is wrong with you; sometimes you learn how to make use of what comes naturally instead of fighting against it.
