One of the most challenging and rewarding things in my life that pushes my mental and physical ability to the extreme limits is spearfishing. I wish I could have captured some of the amazing shots today with the GoPro but I forgot it in the car 😢... check out the stud Mackerel and Mutton @vivachingon whacked! . . . . . #cancunfishingcharters #islamujeresfishingcharter #cancundeepsea #pelagic #offshorefishingcancun #Donchingoncancun #outdoors360 #panga #spearfishing #scubadive #grouper #snapper #mahimahi #Crack4fish #onebreath #freediving #mustadshare #sport fish #islablanca #fishbra #saltlife #fishingaddiction #islamujeresfishing #hurricaneboatanchors #cancunfishingcharter #cancunspearfishing #cancunfishing
Spearfishing in Canucn Mexico. Getting stung by Lion fish. About 9 months ago my friends and I were spearfishing near Isla Blanca and Isla Contoy. This was just a normal day on the water spearfishing in the clear Caribbean waters. I didn’t think I would be making a trip to Red Cross later that day.
We were free dive spearfishing all day at different depths between 15-30ft. There are dozens of scattered rock out crops and reef that we find and dive on. These are known to hold many lion fish and because they are an invasive species we like to do our part by exterminating the problem. They are a problem for the following reasons :
They are Carnivores and they prey upon smaller species, especially young Fry. This is of course common with many species but the issue is that...
They Have No Natural Predators to do any kind of population control. Their coloring and defense system is pretty sufficient in turning away predators.
They take up space. And with growing numbers creates higher demand for real estate. The lion fish begin to occupy the homes of local resident species like #grouper and #snapper and many others. By their “homes” I mean holes and cracks and caves in rocks that offer protection.
I have always been extremely cautious when handling lion fish while spearfishing for them so this was just another day. I was using a free shaft on a banded speargun which enables the fish to freely slide up or down the shaft at any given moment. I had a lion fish at the end of my spear and as I was swimming to the surface to get my breath, I looked up to see if I was clear to breach the surface. Right as I looked back down, I saw the lion fish quickly flutter its tail and slide up the shaft to where I was gripping it. This is when my slow mo vision took into effect. The split second that the poisonous, hyper-dermic needle dorsal spine pricked my hand, seemed like an entire 10 seconds. During that spit second, I was already thinking wow, is this really happening. I don’t even remember feeling the initial prick because the spine was so sharp that it just easily penetrated through my construction style gloves and through to the surface of my skin.
After a few seconds, I began to feel a slight stinging sensation but less than a bee sting for sure. I swam back to the boat and began to tell my friend that I was just stung by a lion fish and he was just like, well thats not good haha! Great... So, not really knowing what to expect and not remembering my PADI Rescue Diver material where it teaches you about what to do when venomous fish or aquatic life stings you, I basically did the exact opposite of what I was supposed to do and went straight to the ice and submerged my hand. You are supposed to apply heat to these types of venomous stings in order to dissipate the toxins. The ice was beginning to have the opposite effect and I sat and began to prepare myself for what I was sure was going to be an excruciatingly painful next few hours.
The boat ride back took about an hour and a half. Every minute that passed the pain was getting worse and worse to the point that I truly believed that if I were to just chop off my hand, that would be a less painful feeling. However, I didn’t... But, I will admit for the record that it was painful enough to bring a 6′4′’ 245 lb man to tears that day. I didn’t know if I was going to pass out because of the intensity of the throbbing as it was shooting all the way up through my arm to my shoulder. It sucked none the less.
We arrived to Red Cross and they gave me a shot of something to prevent any further allergic reactions. My hand was swollen like a grapefruit and the pain lasted for a total of about 6 or 7 hours. The first 2-3 hrs being the worst of it but after peaking the pain began to subside but not quick enough. I could still feel soreness in my hand for several weeks later.
From this point forward, I will not let my guard down for a split second while handling lion fish ever again. I learned the hard way. I am definitely the most cautious now out of the group during our lion fish excursions!

We had a really small weather window to head out #offshore the other day with a client. The wind was strong and seas were high for a few days prior but with a sudden change in wind direction it laid everything down for about 8 hours, just enough time to run out. We had to leave the dock at 5am in the dark to make sure we had enough time to pull off a full day before the wind and seas picked up again.
We reached 100ft of water after about a 45 min ride out. First bait I dropped down was a new shiny blue Rapala crank bait. Right as I got it down to depth, I didn’t even have time to put the rod in the holder… Fish on!
Passed the rod to @jonrgallagher to pull up what I originally thought was a #bonita. After about a min we got it to the boat and realized it was a nice lil Tuna. We don’t catch many black fin tuna here in #Cancun, but when we do, the soy sauce and wasabi isn’t far behind! After that we did some #trolling for #wahoo because a few days before we got into some during the full moon.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t find them again so we tried some bottom fishing and caught a little #strawberry #grouper aka cabrilla en Español and a #jack and a few other species. It was kind of a slow day on the water but we had a good time and saved some some fish in the ocean for the next time.
