The Lapu-Lapu We Eat Could Have Become a Giant
We are catching the future before it ever gets the chance to reproduce.
When we see a small Lapu-Lapu being sold in a market, it is easy to think of it simply as another fish.
But some of these fish are juvenile groupers—fish that have not yet had the opportunity to reach adulthood, reproduce, and replenish the population.
And this is where the problem begins.
A grouper is not meant to remain the size we usually see on a market table.
Given enough time, food, healthy habitat, and protection from fishing, some grouper species can grow dramatically larger.
The giant grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus), for example, can reach approximately 7.5 feet (2.3 meters) in length and can weigh as much as 880 pounds (400 kilograms).
Think about that.
A fish that can eventually become 7½ feet long and nearly 900 pounds starts life as something tiny.
Before it becomes a giant, it has to survive long enough to grow.
The most important size is not the size on your plate.
Research on giant grouper in the Philippines found that females began reaching sexual maturity at approximately 3.2 feet (97 cm) and 52 pounds (23.5 kg).
Primary males reached maturity at approximately 2.9 feet (87 cm) and 37.5 pounds (17 kg).
That means a grouper caught when it is still small may never get the opportunity to become a breeding adult.
Think about what happens when we repeatedly remove fish before they reach reproductive age.
We are not only removing today's fish.
We are removing tomorrow's breeders.
A juvenile grouper caught before maturity produces no offspring.
A fish that survives to adulthood can reproduce and contribute to the next generation.
And a large, mature population gives the species a much better chance of sustaining itself.
How does a Lapu-Lapu become a giant?
It doesn't happen overnight.
A grouper begins life as a tiny larva.
It grows through juvenile stages, finds shelter in reefs and coastal habitats, feeds, avoids predators, and gradually increases in size.
If it survives fishing and other threats, it keeps growing.
Year after year.
Eventually, it becomes a sexually mature adult capable of reproducing.
And if it continues to survive for many more years, some individuals can become enormous.
The giant grouper we see in photographs didn't start out as a giant.
It started as a small fish.
The same kind of small fish that can easily end up on someone's plate.
This is the conservation problem.
The Philippines has a strong demand for Lapu-Lapu, and grouper is a valuable fish.
But grouper populations face serious pressure from overfishing and habitat destruction.
When fishing consistently removes young fish, the population loses individuals before they have had the opportunity to reproduce.
Over time, fewer large adults remain.
Fewer large adults means fewer opportunities for reproduction.
And eventually, the population can become dominated by smaller and younger fish.
A sea full of small fish but almost no large adults is not necessarily a healthy population.
Sometimes, it is a population being harvested faster than it can replace itself.
We don't necessarily need to stop eating Lapu-Lapu.
The bigger question is:
Can we stop taking them before they have had the chance to reproduce?
Responsible fisheries management can include:
Minimum size limits
Protection of spawning areas
Seasonal protection during spawning periods
Enforcement against destructive fishing
Protection and restoration of reef habitats
Responsible aquaculture
Choosing responsibly sourced fish
Consumers can also help by asking:
Where did this fish come from?
Was it caught responsibly?
Was it large enough to reproduce before it was harvested?
Let the small ones grow.
The next time you see a small Lapu-Lapu in a market, don't only see a meal.
See what it could have become.
A breeding adult.
A contributor to the next generation.
A fish that could grow for years.
And for the right species, potentially:
A 7½-foot, nearly 900-pound giant.
The ocean doesn't need us to catch every fish that we can.
Sometimes, the greatest thing we can do for a fish population is simply:
Let them grow.
Let them reproduce.
Let them become giants.
