ââşâHmm⌠I see, I see.â Despite the subject of the conversation being the protective merits of a cooking pot, the mage was listening closely, nodding at each point the man made. While his practices might have been unconventional, Erza knew full well the usefulness that such tactics could possess. âI suppose if the pot itself is durable, none of these things could be an issue. You speak of it with such passion, I can only wonder if it has sentimental value to you?â
âAnd what was that about âRisenâ? Some sort of enemy?â
Eh-- she was this interested in the questionable gear? Donnel blinked, an unsure smile spreading over his lips. âYou could say that, ya could! The name of Tinhead holds some meaninâ, so âm sure I ainât the first to try somethinâ like this to keep it held high! Although⌠Iâve bâin told itâs not really⌠the best thought out idea⌠But I gotta say, itâs bâin workinâ fer me just fine!âÂ
âOh, I sâpose you ainât got none of them from where yer âbouts. Theyâre kinda new to our land, too. Undead soldiers, brought back by that terrible Fell Dragon, the accursed Grima! Nasty ta fight⌠As you might expect any corpse warrior ta be, yâknow! Eh-- maybe youâve got Risen of yer ownâŚ?â
âIf only. Nothing about this is trendy, or anywhere nearâ.
Her mood had darkened over whatever the motivations behind either the scrawl or even the wider tension could all boil down to. No-one was doing this all with genuine care for those they claimed to; no-one could while following through with such actions, surely. It was fear-mongering; it had to be.
And she did feel for those who had come to feel threatened by the dominant human population as a result.
âYou could say that. Someone took it upon themselves to speak for an entire class of people here. All theyâve done is provoke violence and more ill-feeling".
Donnel finally tore his eyes away from the offending paint splatters, turning to look at the lady with a curious gaze, only a few out of place curls obstructing his stare. âSeems like you ainât surprised none-- I reckon that means thisâs bâin happeninâ...â So, then-- there were tensions, but from what sheâd said, he could gather that it was not the entirety of the non-human population in Hive City that felt as the painted letters made it appear. If it wasnât everyone else that was against the human portion, thenâŚ
His fingers curled into fists and he suddenly whirled around, turning to face toward the exit of the alley. These guys werenât even doing the dirty work of fighting for âwhat they believed inâ, then! They were just provoking, having others fight their battles for them. âYA DANG COWARDS!â Donny shouted at the walls, despite the culprits being long gone.
is it true that your dad is a stone? a steven stone?
âListen here, rascalâ time cân change a lotta things, but this ainât one of them things. This Steven fella ainât ever gonâ be my pa!â
Startled, Mitarai felt himself being nudged towards the flower; he wouldâve been completely alright with the other ignoring him, or just saying he wasnât in the way, but this⌠was entirely unexpected. Not to mention unwelcome.
Swallowing back his nerves, the boy timidly looked at the flower, feeling his heartbeat echoing in his ears. âW-wellâŚâ he stammered, trying to identify the plant before him. Unfortunately, nothing was coming to mind; with a defeated sigh, he replied, âIâm afraid⌠I- I donât know what it is. Iâm sorry.â
It was no good, uh? Well, that was a darn shame-- but no matter! âIt kinda goes without sayinâ that you donât always get any ân every answer you want outta life, eh?â Donny pulled back a ways, still smiling at the unidentified flower fondly. âGuess that means we really jusâ gotta stop and âppreciate it as it is and not by its name!â A festival like this was great for that sorta thing, wasnât it? Donny clapped the boy on his shoulder. âNo need to look so bummed about it! Itâs jusâ fine! Is this yer first stop at the festival?â

â´-âGAHAHA! I get that a lot, actually, ah-rooooo! So no need to worry!â
Lobo chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. Even though he had a good idea of what Donnel meant, being called intelligent like that always made the wolf feel pretty sheepish. Giving the other a relaxed smile, Lobo shook his head at their question.
â´-âWell, yes and no, ah-rooooo. Right now, I donât think there are any other people from my world here! But Iâm sure you might find some people like meâ like⌠intelligent animals! Believe it or not, I knew a few way back, but I dunno if theyâre still here.â
His world, huh? Donnel hadnât thought of that quite yet-- but of course! There had to be others like Mister Lobo in his own world! But-- what kind of friends did such a smart wolf come to have? What kinda animals did he get along with? Was it only certain species, or... And then, what did they eat...? âAh, er, um-- so, you come from a place packed with wolves, then, Mister Lobo? Jusâ all wolves, is that right?â Donny shoved aside all unpleasant thoughts. âWhat kinda animals did ya befriend in this old place?â
She didnât see any problem with calling him responsible, even if he did hold back her snacks and flick her in the forehead when he got annoyed with her. He never actually hurt her by flicking her in the head, though she was prone to overreacting and tearing up simply to get attention from him. But he was as responsible as anyone could get in Efiâs eyes. He worked a job and kept her fed and when they were fighting lies he was always there to help fight them. âYeah! His name is really pathetic but heâs super strong and heâs raised me since I hatched!â If he could hear her now, she was sure heâd be annoyed at her calling him papa and saying he raised her. He didnât seem to like being called her dad.
Oh, it was a problem. Efi was too young, and had been raised in a world where barging into someoneâs house was expected, to have any concept of stranger danger. She would have gone with literally anyone. Donnel was very open, though, and she was sure theyâd have a lot of fun going wherever it was they were going. She chuckled as he ruffled her hair, smiling brightly at him. Her ears twitched, flicking upward with happiness. âOkay! What are you looking for? Maybe I can sniff it out!â No, she couldnât. She had a heightened sense of hearing, not smell. âSo where are we gonna go? Oh, I know, letâs go to a candy store!â
Pathethic, huh?! Donnel was tossed yet another questionable quality that he wasnât sure what to think of. But, hey, whatâs in a name, his mama always said! âIfân heâs raised a child all by his lonesome, could it be that heâs tryâna rid himself of that? After all, thatâs about the least pathetic job I can think of...â What a man! Though, speaking of which, he should probably collect on hers while they were on the topic of it. âWell, Iâm bettinâ that you must have the coolest, fiercest name of them all! What is it? Eh-- mineâs a plain ole reliable-- Donnel! Or Donny. Whatever you feel is easier works jusâ fine fer me!â
She was eager to help, wasnât she? A nice girl indeed! Smiling sheepishly, Donnel looked over along the paths from where heâd come-- âItâs a stone of sorts. Heck, âm not even sure I brought it to this darn place or if it even meant anythinâ at all, but it is important, so Iâve gotta take a gander at least... âYou know, a candy shopâs not a shabby idea...â With his luck, that was precisely where that stone had ended up. âSeen one âround these parts, little miss?â
@odeofnight ! continued from [x]
âDonâ mention it, miss. Looked like it was a bit of a doozy, that one.â Donnel had jumped himself, startled by her fierce awakening and the sudden grip on his hand. Getting back to his district that night seemed like too much of a hassle what with the dangers lurking about, so heâd opted for an inn-- a spend he probably wouldnât favor down the line, but at least he wasnât the only one with the idea. In fact, they were so full up that heâd been marked down to share with this little lady. Sheâd been sleeping when heâd walked in-- looking like her dreams werenât what dreamland should consist of at all. Eh-- but he blinked at her in disbelief when he was asked to stay, holding her hand and all. His face flushed a bit and-- and was she rhyming?! âWell, I mean-- my cotâs jusâ down the way, so I sâpose I donât mind, but-- are ya sure? Are-- are ye sure yer jusâ fine, miss?â
â´: Âť Glad to see he could laugh about it. Even though he could, Arnath was far less amused at the idea of eating something that touched someoneâs head so.. thoroughly. Still, he seemed to have his head screwed on tight in regards to the cleanliness of cooking. It was relieving but at the same time she still wasnât comfortable knowing that the cooking device was on his head.Â
â Well, if you know how to clean your equipment you may have a shot.. â Trying at least not to dash whatever culinary goals he has in mind.Â
â´: Âť How he seemed worried about the fact that a helmet was more expensive and heavier didnât seem like that much of a detriment. She wasnât thinking of a fully covering head piece but just a proper helmet that had more structure to it to withstand blows. A pot was made to simply hold heat and cook food, nothing else. Sure some were sturdy but not enough to take a hard weapon to the head. Hell she could probably punch through it.Â
â They donât have to be heavy. Just something thick enough all around to hold on its own would be sufficient. After all, how hard is the bottom of the pot anyways? Is it thicker than the rest of it or just as thin? âÂ
â´: Âť Maybe she just felt partially responsible if he ever got hurt cause of that thing that she didnât stop him. For someone so seemingly young and wanted to fight, she just wanted to make sure if he was that serious that heâd at least treat his own well being a bit better. Pot meet kettle aside, sheâd listen to his explanation on how this axe breaker works, scratching her head in confusion.Â
â Isnât that a bit of over confidence? Youâre relying on hitting assumed weak spots on the opponent when you should be worrying about how to work around their entire arsenal. If you go into a fight assuming you have the upper hand because of that, itâll throw you off more if something unexpected happens. â For her, she knew the idea of using a large hammer which was similar in practice but it was easy for her to make use of the strengths of the hammer to compensate for the weaknesses. Using dashes and staggers before slamming it into the opponent.Â
â Iâm sure itâs impressive, but if youâre that fast in that you should be fast enough to deal with just about any weapon. It seems odd to have a set of movements just for axes after all.. youâd think youâd apply that to all sorts of weapons. âÂ
â Then Iâm not sure why youâd call yourself shepherds. A strange name for a band of warriors now, is it? â At least thatâs what she thought on the matter.Â
â Maybe. I mean, I donât want to call myself retired but.. I donât really do it a lot much anymore. A few things have been happening to me lately so.. Iâm not sure if I can throw myself back into that work. Besides, Iâd be more interested in the person Iâd have to protect, not the money that goes with it. âÂ
Hey, so he might have a shot at this whole cooking thing after all! One vote of confidence is all it takes for him to have enough reason to carry on, whether or not it will amount to anything in the end. And, at the very least, Donnel knows how to make jerky! âI wonât be a master cook or anythinâ of that nature, but if itâs ânough to live off of, then I canât say Iâve got any complaints!â The innovation of it all still moves a shine in his eye. Using his pot gear to cook-- resourceful! Wonderful! As for its durability-- he doesnât waste a minute in whipping it off his head again, bringing it to his ears, and tapping out a jolly beat into it with sharp and quick knuckles. âHonestly, I ainât ever seen no sturdier cookinâ pot than this ever made! Itâs not like thatâs what I was thinkinâ âbouts when I went and secured it oâer my hair, but itâs servinâ its purpose and more. Itâs at least a little bit thicker down at the bottom than the resâ! Gots ta be, when yer holdinâ down hair thatâs this messy!â Which reminds him-- he slams it down back on his head so fast that the CLANK makes him a little dizzy. âEhehe-- ainât nothinâ to see there!â
But of course someone couldnât go into a fight expecting a complete win. âIf anythinâ, you gots to be prepared for the worst, right? That ainât news to me-- Iâve bâin expecting it since the day I firsâ joined Chrom and Robin and the others! But, rather, Iâm aware their abilities are dashed⌠Though, at the same time, Iâm prepared to learn that itâs my abilities that are dashed in their favor. âItâs easy to get ahead of yerself when thereâs a great tactician tellinâ ya how to move about, but thatâs jusâ a matter of mixing trust and reflex!â He pauses, pondering the mechanics of it all, now that sheâs mentioned it. âThe fundamentals are all I know when it comes down to it. Never really bothered to ask beyond that. But I cân find out more fer ya if yaâd like! Iâm a bit curious now myself. Iâve only really tinkered with the physical movement aspects ân allâŚâ She has a righteous heart, or something, doesnât she? He tilts his hat in respect to her words, brandishing a bright grin. ââWouldnât call yerself retired-- then you ainât, are you? Course, ya gotta be workinâ in this line for the heart! The way I see it, though, thereâs always someone or somethinâ worth protecting. I doubt thereâs a shortage of that to be found here in this dern place! âSay, I got a proposition fer ya from the littlest Shepherd. (Ifân weâre excusinâ Nowi, what with that dragon form of hers.) Maybe not here âer right this second, but-- wanna try tappinâ out my head? As far as I know, you ainât tryâna kill me, so⌠And if you do hit, Iâll look into investinâ in some new gear!â
"Ehehe, pardon me! I thought I'd fished it all up when the application slipped into that tricky ol' pond down the way there, but I missed the most important piece! Ahem." Unrolls crumpled up, water-damaged paper. "Experience! See, I used ta be part of a volunteer force known as the Shepherds led by his Royal Majestyfulness, Chrom! We fought every which bandit 'n Plegian 'n Risen that threatened the land's peace, we did! I reckon Jackdaw 'er Crow would work jus' fine, as you see fit, Sirfulness!"
âExcellent. Jackdaw it is, then. Welcome to the Crows, Donnel.â

The sudden drape of warmth over his back startled Donny from his reverie, and the garment almost flew from his shoulders, but he caught it with clumsy fingersâ pot almost whipping off his head as he turned it every which way to find from where itâd come.Ahâ she was the only one nearby, so this girl hadââŚ?A snort escaped him before he could prevent it which gave way for the hearty laughter that followed. âHooâ, howdy there.â That is a good load of strong language coming in his directionâ even his pot helm couldnât deflect that! âWhat a messâŚâ
Black ink marked the wall in front of them, jagged text sending an equally sharp and merciless message. And an ugly sight, as far as she was concerned. Not only because it was an eyesore, but standing just feet from propaganda screaming âKILL ALL NONHUMANSâ brought no sort of security.
Azure eyes turned to the other standing in front of the scrawl. âDid you see who wrote this? Iâve got some choice words about their âartââ. She raised a hand in to add in the air-quotes.
âIt really ainât jusâ some sorta trendy mood-settinâ decoration, eh?â Donnelâs eyes remain trained on the words and he leans back into himself, arms crossed, head tilted as far as his hat will allow him to go as all angles of the writings were considered. âAinât this somethinâ elseâŚâ Heâd gotten the creeps while walking past it and stopped to get a better look-- was this kind of dispute present in this place? The words âman spawnâ reel around in his head, but even Panne didnât seem so hateful when regarding them, initially. âDidnât catch any glimpse of the rotten-toothed varmint whoâs upholdinâ this sorts of thing. Is there somethinâ Iâm missinâ? What in tarnation is goinâ on âround these parts?â
ăâĄă â Robin couldnât help but laugh at the rather delayed response. That was right, he hadnât introduced himself to Donnel in this realm, had he? âYes, I have been for quite some time! Iâm rather offended that you didnât notice sooner!â he joked, hoping that the playful glimmer in his eye told him he wasnât serious. âŚOr, at least that he was planning something. It was the same look he got when he had a strange plan, after all.
âEither way, itâs simply a habit, then?â he pondered with a hand gliding to his chin. âWell, one mixed with a tradition? Thatâs quite interesting, actually! I never had considered that everyone we saw in your village wore the same pots - I just assumed they were the first things you could find in the midst of an attack, or that you never had an armoury.â
âMy heart is achinâ from all of this relief! If yer here, there ainât as much of a need ta sleep with both eyes peeled like Lonâquâs âtaters!â Donnel pressed a hand against his chest, heaving said relief with a single exhale, before starting up violently and hastily waving his arms. âI-- I mean, I woulda wanted ta have noticed right away, Robin, but-- ...but yer yankinâ my chain, ainât âcha? And I fell right into it-- yer trappinâ is a whole new playinâ fieldâŚâ With a pulled face and brows furrowed for glaring, Donny retained his disgruntled appearance for all of five seconds before bursting into laughter.
âAh-- mighty good deductions, those are!â In fact, if Donny hadnât known his reasons for it, those would be the most plausible origins he couldâve ever heard. No less from their brilliant tactician! âActually, thatâs on the truthful sides of it all, too⌠Erhem. I canât say I know how far back âTinheadâ goes, but I do sâpose it made a difference down the line! Heh, is it kindâa silly after all?â

Itâs odd, really. In her world there was no questioning of the small dragon running around the town. Even when everyone in a town had been told not to go out at night, no one questioned her walking outside as night fell. Later no one questioned her walking around a hotel at night with no supervision. And most recently no one had questioned letting her go on alone to save her dad from lies. Yet here, everyone seemed worried about her running around, stopping her to ask if she was okay and if she had anyone around to take care of her. It didnât make much sense to her.
She looked at the boy who approached her and nodded at the first question. The second made her scowl though, placing her hands on her hips. âIâm looking for Papa and heâs really responsible even if heâs always flicking me and takes away my snacks sometimes.â She guessed she had wandered far from home, though she had no idea how sheâd gotten here in the first place. âI donât know where Iâm supposed to be. But Iâll walk around with you!â
Always flicking her and taking her snacks-- but she claims that heâs plenty responsible? Is that some kind of punishment?! Donny scratches at his nose, stumped by the differing definitions in responsibility the two seem to have developed. Well, itâs not his business to say what this alleged responsible man is or isnât, so heâll nod his head at her sheepishly and raise a hand in apology. ââM frightful sorry! Iâm sure heâs a nice man to have raised such a sweet lilâ girl as yerself! That beinâ said-- you are lookinâ fer him, then?â It might be a bit of a problem, how quickly sheâs said yes to him-- but, then again, Donny likes to think he gives off approachable airs, and for now heâs just relieved heâs gotten to her first. âIâm lookinâ fer somethinâ related to my Pa, too.â Reaching over to ruffle her hair, he bends into a crouch, and offers her a smile. âMaybe we can find âem both in one go! First, letâs try ta find outs where weâre walkinâ, and we can go from there. Ready?â
â´: Âť That wasnât sanitary. As she stared at the pot before her, how he implied he would just cook it like that as is sheâd feel her skin crawl a bit. Not that she assumed he was a bad cook (although he seemed to think so) but the fact that thing had been on his head. So hair or dead skin would no doubt be in whatever heâd make, making it unpleasant no matter what.Â
â At least wash it, first. Who knows what could be in there.. âÂ
â Well, Iâm only really using an axe as example. Anything could really happen to you whether it be claws, muskets or any kind of blunt force or trauma. In fact, blunt force would be the worst of it, since it could crush the thing around your head. âÂ
â´: Âť At mention of something called âAxebreakerâ though Arnath would tilt her head. It seemed kind of presumptuous to her to have a skill that specifically told her âif you have an axe Iâll overpower you.â Maybe it was just the straight forward nature of how youâd declare such a thing. Well for her with demons it wouldnât matter, but fighting another thinking human being and declaring that? Easy, sheâd just use a sword. Almost in instinct would she raise up her wooden sword, patting the dull blade against her open palm.Â
â And so what happens if someone uses a sword? âÂ
â´: Âť Some tongue and cheek from her but it was a good lesson for him to learn how to adapt to new things. Although she would watch his irritation over apparently forgetting such a skill. Kind of coincidental given how she had none of her original power here, either. Maybe there was a correlation.. or maybe he took a hard hit to the pot.. Until she got more information on the matter, sheâd keep it to herself. He seemed peeved enough as is.Â
â You mean like herding sheep? I donât really know how well Iâd do with that. As for the work here, Iâm not sure whatâs available. All I really knew how to do back home was be aâ âÂ
â´: Âť She stopped herself all of a sudden. For some reason, the word âknightâ became a bit harder to say for.. a number of reasons. Maybe it was because she had technically speaking left that occupation.. but it wasnât wrong of her either. She could just.. use it in past tense.Â
â ⌠a knight. And, maybe. People need to eat, after all. âÂ
Didnât she sound-- scandalized? Her tone was enough to make Donnel fall into a fit of snorting, but he did try to choke back the laughter to stop himself from appearing rude-- of course, this led to a small bout of coughing, but the entirety of his amusement was wrapped up with a few hearty laughs that just couldnât be withheld. âHaha! âCourse Iâll clean it out, maâam! I reckon there ainât nothinâ that sounds less appetizinâ than a Tinhead broth! Iâd be stumped ta hafta try it out myself! Iâve bâin barred from kitchen duties before, but I do think that would grant me a lifetime order away from cookinâ anything at all! Ah, I never did see myself makinâ it out there as a chef anyhowâŚ!â
Heâd have to mention this when he wrote home--, and his grin sobered in serious consideration her warnings. âEven ifân that be the case, I figure itâs âbout the same as not usinâ anything at all. Helmets are heavier than a monthâs worth âo pig slop, and the kinks that get into my neck are no joking matter-- lessân yer Vaike ân you get a hoot from that... âIt may look dinky, but itâs trusty enough and enough is somethinâ Iâve more er less always found workable!â His words werenât stern and he capped them with the return of his grin, and the return of his pot to his head. And on the matter of someone using a sword--... âWell, I canât say that donât change everythinâ, âcause it sure as sweat on a hot summer day does-- see, the technique itself encroaches upon the, er, agility in the event here that the enemy yer facinâ has such a bulky strikinâ tool. Alongside that, the rest oâ the skill is designed ta hit the marks where an axe-wielder would face most difficulty, but it goes hand in hand with the speed... â He would have demonstrated, but the moves, the motions heâd practiced for weeks on end with the campâs members⌠Theyâre wrapped in the thickest of fogs in his head⌠âItâs really somethinâ! Couldnât believe it myself. Darn, I just wish I could show ya!â
Ah. So, sheâs a knight? His eyes took a shine to that, and Donny was instantly reminded of the other Shepherds who could boast such a class. Sheâd seemed good and well before, this girl, but somehow her previous job puts him a bit more at ease. âLike I thought, youâd fit right in! Eh-- but itâs not sheep we herd, I reckonâŚâ Huh. He hadnât really given their name any thought until now⌠âWell, thereâs always a call fer knights! I bet you can find a hire in no time at all!" A comforting notion, but-- he really didn't mean to stay here long.
