i’m not a system, nor have i ever claimed to be, and i’m not endogenic; my polymindence was caused by trauma.

unfortunately i just… didn’t describe it. i have felt polyminded since i was a preteen but i didn’t think it was something anyone else related to and so i didn’t know there were any terms to describe it. i kept it to myself. usually i would just journal about “the wolves inside my head”, which were my minds, but i didn’t know it. i have some very old notes on my phone describing how i feel like im made up of several different wolves that represented each part of me (subpersonalities—though i didn’t know that term either).

polymind was the first term i found that described something like what i experience and im so glad to have found it.

i’ve mentioned before that they help me practice more self-love and self understanding, because i tend to be quite hard on and critical of myself. but i don’t have the same impossibly high standards for others, so viewing my minds as separate from me helps me keep kindness and understanding as my priority when analyzing behaviour or thoughts from my minds. i might berate myself for making a mistake, but i wouldn’t blame a puppy named evie for making the same mistake. she didn’t mean to! it helps me be gentler on myself.

evie especially is also our age/pet regression keeper and i certainly think that helps take care of our mental health to be able to de-stress and regress with her.

lately i’ve been considering if i have the beginnings of a new mind who is mainly focused on self care. and if not, i’ve been considering trying to create or develop one. however, when i tried to develop a mind to help with organization and school work (Monika), it didn’t really work and she never really ended up being part of me. so im not sure if i CAN do that, but i might try, so i can have someone to help take care of the body and our hygiene/physical needs.

our polymindence is very similar to ifs therapy and we develop it mostly through parts work through an ifs framework. to put it simply, it feels like distinguishing each part of myself that feels unique (called subpersonalities). it’s like identifying each little voice in the back of my head that’s telling me something different from the other voices, and giving it a name so that we can communicate with it better. it helps give me a better understanding of each part of myself.

a lot of the time, it feels like having conflicting opinions from different voices. it gives me a way to represent each part of me that wants something different or thinks something different. vanille represents my angelic identity and is withdrawn, disinterested in most things, but is active mostly when i’m intoxicated. evie represents my pet/age regression and the mindset i go into; she’s me when people think of me as a good friend, a lover. koda represents my church grim identity and is a trauma-keeper; is active when we are having flashbacks and/or otherwise experiencing symptoms of trauma (like distrust of strange men). and so on.

in my everyday life it doesn’t look like anything different from a monomind (someone who is not polyminded). my subpersonalities activate normally, just like everyone else in the world (because everyone has subpersonalities). i feel my minds are a little more separate than the average monomind, though, and i can hear distinct voices and personalities from them. their main purpose is giving me a framework through which to view myself, understand my conflicting emotions better, and practice self-love and understanding (because i find it much easier to be kind to a puppy named evie then i do to myself).

but the mind i miss the most is evie. she hasn’t been active in quite a long time. i miss being silly and carefree and happy and puppy. i miss how she makes me feel. i haven’t had enough time to feel that way in a long time and it’s sad!
