Hi I’m Sirius and I’m a queer alterhuman system✩~!
I’m a mostly nonhuman system with 4 canine hosts and a few fictionfolk ✩
Joined the therian community in 2015 and discovered I was a system in 2023✩~!
This is a side blog and we interact from @caninecosmonaut ✩
My simplified primary theriotypes are a folkloric black dog, kangal, catahoula leopard dog, rough collie and foxhound ✩~!
I’m a transspecies dog therian/weredog, but being a system makes the specifics more complicated since I’m really 6 different dogs sharing one body (plus one cat and a rat) ✩

Nonfiction: Creative nonfiction and essays, personal or academic. Maximum of 5,000 words, one piece per submission. We ask that academic essays be accompanied by a bibliography.

Articles, reviews, recommendations, and adjacent material: ANIMAL will publish short features of up to 1,000 words on a rolling basis, independent of any themed issue. Such features might be media reviews, a curated reading list, or a recipe. Email [email protected] with “feature” in the subject line to ensure we see your piece.
We do not accept AI-generated or AI-assisted works.
We ask that all poetry and prose submissions be formatted single spaced with a 12-point font. Authors intentionally using creative fonts and formats are encouraged to make a note of it in their submission. All submissions should be emailed to [email protected] as an attached file. Please indicate the category of your submission in the subject line. A cover letter is not required, but please provide a short third-person bio to accompany your work, including a name to attribute the piece to. We post on our Instagram and Tumblr when a new piece has been published; if you would like us to tag you in the description, please let us know.
ANIMAL does not accept work that has been previously curated, in print or online. Works may be previously self-published on social media, but may not have been published in books, magazines, or similar collections open to the public. If your piece is accepted, we ask that ANIMAL have first serial rights and non-exclusive digital rights. This means that we are granted the rights to be the first publication to publish your piece and that we may display your piece on our website indefinitely. Copyright will remain with you.
After we publish, you are free to submit your work to other publications, though we ask that ANIMAL be credited in subsequent reprints.
In the interest of accessibility, ANIMAL is free to submit to and read. Although we would love to compensate our contributors for their work, our small crew works fully on a volunteer basis and cannot currently pay for submissions. This is a passion project for us, and our hope is that as interest in the magazine grows we will be able to adopt a model that would allow us to compensate our artists and writers while still hosting free submissions.
Feel free to send us an ask or email us with any questions regarding submissions. We aim for a submission response time of two weeks, but we are a small crew. Feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] if we haven’t gotten back to you after a month.
But to summarize: The new website is up! Artist, panelist, and staff applications are open right now and can be found here. Those forms auto-close on June 30th at 11:59pm (US East). This year's mascot vote is also open, and can be found on the same page. The mascot vote only lasts a week, so get your votes in!
The email newsletter is also being retired in favor of RSS, with more details available on the news page.

These are mask comms that I finished in February and never posted cuz I was still recovering from top surgery- super freaking happy with this mourning dove and how sweet looking their face came out-
I’ve been very very intensely bird shifty recently and I honestly kinda want to remake my crow mask. We’re in the midst of moving at the moment, but once we’re at the new place, I’m gonna start on some prototype wings, because the mask really doesn’t cut it with wing shifts. I miss having wing prosthetics that fit, but I’ve grown out of all mine and I NEED new ones.
FIRST CETACEAN!!! Figuring out how to make mask that maintains visibility while simultaneously still looking like a dolphin was complicated oh my gods- I am quite pleased with how it did turn out tho. If I do make others in the future, I do think I’m gonna try and find a different method of making the surface beyond using slightly smother fabric to cover it and putting five hundred layers of primer on it ;-;
I love this rat. So much. And this is the very first time I’d done whiskers; I just used fishing line, but I think they look pretty good and seemed to hold up alright!
Just reminiscing a bit. TL;DR: I love you modern teenage therians & otherkin, and also if anyone was on Chicken Smoothie circa 2008-2012 please say hi!
When I first stumbled upon therianthropy back in 2006, I quickly realized that there wasn't a place for me in the communities whose essays and information I was excitedly reading. It had been so freeing and exhilarating to know that I wasn't alone in how I am, but all the therian forums were for adults, and I was a teenager. I probably could have joined the "adult" forums and talked to grown-up animals instead of just lurking, but I didn't feel comfortable talking to strange adults (this was back when we actually taught kids to not disclose personal info online!), and the people on therian forums didn't feel like my peers anyway. So many of their conversations just sounded like dry philosophy, or referenced "adult" things I didn't relate to. I resigned myself to just reading what people wrote, and being a lonely teenager with nobody to talk to.
My first time really talking to other nonhumans, not just lurking, was on the forum for a digital pet website called Chicken Smoothie. It was barely even a browser game at the time, just a cozy little forum with a pet adoption feature, and the users were a few hundred teens and preteens chatting and making art. But, in probably late 2008 or early 2009, someone started an otherkin thread and I finally found my peers. We spent hours a day swapping information we'd read, figuring out what people were, and just having fun. There was no gatekeeping or unfriendly grilling or essay-writing, and no sanctimonious adults to tell us we weren't being "serious" enough about nonhumanity. We were serious, but in the way kids are serious, before society makes them afraid to be authentic and silly. Conversations about spirituality and phantom shifts were interspersed with people roleplaying and making animal sounds, and we enjoyed both just as much. It was a space for all of us to act openly nonhuman around other people for the first time, and we did it like teenagers. We chatted through text and made art for each other because that's all the Internet really was at the time, but if had been possible (and socially acceptable) to take and share photos and videos of us acting like ourselves we would absolutely have been doing that, too. I can't even begin to imagine how much fun we'd have had with access to modern social media, when just talking to each other about who we were was already so fulfilling.
I don't know how many of the people I was friends with still call themselves therians, otherkin, or vampires. It's likely some of them were just roleplaying and left those things in the past. But I'm still here over 15 years later, so I know I was far from the only one genuinely expressing who I was. It doesn't matter to me whether those people I was a nonhuman kid with "grew out of it" or not, because that sense of joy and community was real. There wasn't a space for nonhuman teens online, so we carved one out ourselves.
Modern teens don't have to search so hard to find their community. When I look at the therian and otherkin tags on tumblr today, and when I see videos of teens on tiktok wearing homemade masks and running in the grass, what I see is a bunch of young people doing the exact same things I was doing on a forum in 2009. The infrastructure of the internet has made it hard to find and share accurate information the way we used to so there's a lot more misinformation, but the joy of teenagers learning they're not alone is still the same. There are so many high schoolers out there talking about shifts and posting silly animal sounds the same way I did, and that makes me really happy.
Maybe some of them are roleplaying and will stop calling themselves therians or otherkin in a few years, but that doesn't actually matter. There are people out there exploring nonhumanity for the very first time, and the joy is real.
Finally went on a prolonged walk outside topless post-nips lol.
It was a good exercise for us in general. Physically yes, but more than. We sort of grounded by focusing on the plants, water, and birdsong. Also practiced stomach breathing, which we struggle with due to constant subconscious lower body muscle tension , including "sucking in our gut". So that felt nice.
And it was good practice for just allowing ourselves to exist as a beast out and about. We have well crafted our torso and felt proud to show it off a bit after the initial anxiety passed. Some glances, and a scoffing teenager, but the area wasn't too busy, and nobody gave us any issues.
It was so so bright and clear out. The sun on our skin and fur was wonderful, the breeze was wonderful. The birds and the bugs and the cotton and pollen. We saw a couple of squirrels too. We recently got this necklace from a local market (will edit this post if we find them again) and I am happy we got to give it a lot of sun as well :3

A depiction of what it feels to be in-between shapes, and where I like to imagine myself in this awkward form.
Most days I feel like a weird amalgamation of body parts that don't fit into the body I have. An ever changing mass of limbs, shifting and distorting, trying to shape itself into something it physically cannot. I overcompensate for my movements, lowering my posture as if ready to drop on all fours, I duck my head an extra depth to fit my ears below an obstacle, adjust the way I sit to make space for my tail or walk on my toes to acclimate to the feeling of paws.
Some days my phantom sensations are so strong that I feel it in my entire body. It is so physically distressing to viewing a body does not match the sensation or move in the way that it should. It can be emotionally difficult to move my body and sometimes | feel stuck, unable to move at all. It is an uncomfortable disconnection between mind and body.
Lately l've found drawing the physical sensations of my phantom shifts to be quite therapeutic and healing - especially in those moments I feel stuck. I feel as though this is a big jump in my digital art capability too, I'm very proud of this one! 🐾
A lot of gear suggestions aren't conducive with workplace or school dress codes, might be unsafe for some, or just aren't everyone's style. Here’s some ideas for understated nonhuman expression that's not just "wear a graphic print".
If this post inspires you to buy anything, please shop secondhand where you can!
CLOTHING
Fabric choices - Animal print or fur isn't the only option! Focus on which textures you associate with your ‘types. Maybe you like heavier fabrics like wool or leather, wrapping you in a protective layer. Maybe you enjoy the lightweight feel of silks and linen that flutter in the wind. Maybe the structure of sturdy denim feels like a chassis. What feels right against your skin?
Cut - This refers to the shape or style of a garment. What silhouettes read as your ‘types? Maybe you want to add bulk via a boxy blazer with shoulder pads. Maybe sleek, straight cut trousers or a pencil skirt is more you. Look up cuts of jeans if you're new to this and want to start somewhere!
Socks - Maybe they're full on novelty socks, maybe they've got hoof prints on the underside. Fun and subtle!
Shoes - Big platforms or steel toe boots might remind you of hooves, or running shoes can keep you nimble and quiet on your toes. From an aesthetic standpoint, pay attention to the colour and textures. Maybe a brown suede reminds you of your paws, maybe metal hardware reminds you of your shell.
ACCESSORIES
Watches - These could be subtle, with just a strap colour your associate with your ‘type, or a full on statement piece that looks like alien technology. I picked mine because it reminds me of a cat collar.
Cat collar bracelets - Speaking of, these just look like leather bracelets and are a hell of a lot subtler than wearing a dog collar!
Glasses frames - Does the shape of your frames feel insectoid? Round and owl like? Qquare and boxy? How do they transform the shape of your face? Of course, a relevant colour or pattern is also an option!
Pins & Brooches - These could be colourful enamel pins or small simple vintage brooches. Wear them on your clothes or bags.
Belts - This can be a great place to introduce heavier textures like reptile skin or suede, or you can go the opposite direction and use fabric or rope. A statement buckle can be a fun addition if you want to get a bit flashier!
TL;DR Thinks about these two things: what feels right in a sensory way (good textures, lines up with phantom shifts) and what looks right to you (colours, patterns, how fabric sits on your body).
I think it's time to get even weirder with my alterhumanity but I'm still trying to unlearn a lot of cringe culture and antikin sentiments I used to hold.. tell me about your "weirdest" kintype!!
I'm a rock! Specifically granite, probably a laccolith that formed like 4+ billion years ago. And yes, I have phantom/mental shifts, they're very peaceful :)
The concept of there being a predominantly alterhuman meet that bans folks 30+ is odd to me. Like you could justify U25 as a young person event due to that being the cut off age for a number of young people things but 30???? An adults and adult man - if you have safeguarding concerns ban all adults not just the moment folks become closer to the beginning of middle age than the beginning of adulthood. I'm sorry I just find it so bizarre??? Particularly as it's not even an event that advertises itself as a young person event until you look at the rules. Maybe it's because I entered the alterhuman community pre-tiktok (like 10yrs ago now) and to me it's always been more spiritual but this is wild to me. Like is the concept of learning from your elders lost on so many folks????
This isn't truly a malicious post or anything, I'm just genuinely confused. I miss the old forums 😭 Maybe I'm just old
good morning to people with annoying phantom limbs, people who keep questioning everything, people who have given up on explaining their non-humanity, paleotherians who arent dinosaurs, people who were never human, people with embarrassing kintypes, people who remember when anti-kin were fun, people who use it/its pronouns, people who hate having skin, and people with semi-secret otherkin sideblogs
good afternoon to people who call themselves otherkind instead of otherkin, wolf therians with blue eyes, those who don’t have a kintype but are just vaguely nonhuman, otherkin youtubers, people who watch discourse from a distance, objectkin, those with both non-spiritual non-psychological beliefs, OC-kin, background characters, those who practice quadrobics, and those who center their whole personality around being otherkin
Good night to people who don’t experience shifts, people that have been wrong about their kintype more than once, those who feel dysphoria, and those who don’t, those who still call themselves a “were” instead of Therian, those who like and own gear, those who don’t, those who keep their alterhumanity to themselves, and those who wear it proudly, people who have been around since the early days, and people who awoke yesterday

THERIANS: Man and Beast
THERIANTHROPES (aka therians) are a subculture of people who on some level identify as nonhuman animals. For example, a wold therian is a person. Who identifies as a wolf on some level.
Being a therian is generally considered to be something intrinsic and involuntary; we don’t choose to be therians or what animals we are.
Therians exist in all walks of life, come from all backgrounds and are all ages. There’s many explanations someone may give for what makes them a therian…
[Page 2]
‘I was an animal in a past life’
‘I grew up around animals so I feel like one’
‘I’m an animal soul trapped in a human body;
‘My neurodivergence makes me feel more animal than human’
‘I just am what I am’ :)
[Page 3]
Not all therians are mammals like cats & dogs; they can be any genus and species, living or extinct.
They could also be a mythical creature (sometimes called theriomythic) or an animal species from pop culture (fictherian).
[Page 4]
SHIFTS are experiences that make someone feel more aware of their animal side. For example…
PHANTOM SHIFTS
feeling supernumery body parts, e.g. wings
MENTAL SHIFTS
change in mindset to be more animal
DREAM SHIFT
Becoming your theriotype in a dream
AND MORE!
