A very brief sloppy history of soulbonding
Okay, so I started wandering out, trying to see when the word โsoulbondingโ came into use.ย So far, the earliest reference I can find is from 7/9/01, in Souls and Bonds and Ourselves on a (surprise!) multi websiteโฆ in fact, itโs good olโ Pavilion Hall, the group me and Zyfron used to joke was all about multi inactivism back in the day.ย The way terminology is slung around makes it sound like the community and the slang were already there then. (So donโt worry, old fogeys, the word soulbonding is now old enough to drive, practically.)
The soulbonding comm on LJ was created at the very, very start of 2002, January 3rd to be exact.ย And Laura Gilkey seems to have helped spawn peopleโs favorite definitions and quotables; she wrote a story about soulbonding, called The Trinity, and put it on Fictionpress on April 22nd, 2002.ย Pavilion Hall has a handful of other articles on soulbonding that date from this time, including transcriptions from the autobiographies of Edith Warton and Robert E. Howard (the Conan guy).ย Ha, there are even articles on how plurals and soulbonders could get along better!ย Yes, weโve been having the same damn turf wars in fifteen years.
In the Edith Warton article, Astraea notes, โOf course, [Edith Warton] didnโt call it soulbonding. No one did until a small internet anime fanfiction writersโ group started using that word.โ According to this InsaneJournal entry, itโs from 1996.ย If thatโs true, congratulations, the term โsoulbondโ is old enough to drive, vote, and gamble.ย Soon itโll be old enough to drink!
It LOOKS like that anime fanfiction writerโs group mightโve been involved with Child of Mana, but link rot has long since set in so I canโt date that, or even know for sure.
EDIT: foolish me!ย Child of Manaโs soulbonding site was first archived on 6/26/2001, so predates the Pavilion Hall article.ย And IT references this article, do you believe in soulbonding at first sight? which was written in 1999.ย Annnnnnd shibooski!ย This article answers!
Q: Who coined the term โSoulBondingโ? And how come itโs capitalized that way? A: Amanda Flowers, a member of the JFW, coined the term โSoulBondingโ, and I believe that in one discussion relating to the subject, she said that the inspiration for the term being capitalized like that was the title of the RPG โSoulBlazerโ. Basically, she just thought it looked cool. ^_^
JFW was the โJust for Writersโ mailing list, which was for Final Fantasy rather than Child of Mana.ย It seems to have been an informal thing, so no official website, just an invite-only mailing list.
So anyway, I canโt prove itโs from 1996, but I can at least place it back to 1999, and itโd spread into pretty common online parlance by 2001. (Since one blogger references it on 6/4/2001 with โmy friend Amanda Flowers (the actual coiner of the term โsoulbondโ that everyone likes to bandy about these days)โ)
Soooo there you go.ย Until I put more work into it, the word for soulbonding is at least from โ99.
EDIT AGAIN: Okay, a little more digging helped me find this article, which claims Flowers coined the term in โ98.ย So now Iโve got three different citations: โ96, โ98, and 2000, none of which has any back up.ย I know it canโt be 2000, because โdo you believe in soulbonding at first sight?โ was from 1999 and the term and slang was already in place by then.ย So yeah, โ98 or โ96, but seeing the nature of the email list, itโs unlikely an exact date is available, for me anyway.ย But yeah, the term was indeed invented by teenage Final Fantasy III fans, far as I can tell, and is now old enough to be able to vote.
Fantastic! This is great research, and really interesting history.

Question for nonhuman/kinfolk, are you fluent in any other language other than English?
No
Yes
SORRY ABOUT THE LAST ONE this is a repost from my community post. on my main kin sideblog. i'm booboo the fool. Please rb to boost sample size if you can, and PLEASE don't vote unless you identify as alterhuman, therian, otherkin, holothere, otherhearted, copinglink, etc
Fictional langs/conlang count, anything as long as more than a handful of folks can communicate in it in any form.
How do you feel about being treated as your source / 'type?
Love it
I like it, but please also acknowledge I'm my own person
Neutral / no opinion
I don't like it
I hate it
Depends on the source/kintype
Other opinion
I think some people think up complex reasons why otherkin people are a not a well received concept now that people are becoming aware of it, Iโve seen some theories that assume people are having some deep thoughts about it about like personhood n stuff. I think itโs simple, they think itโs weird and crazy. The way people talk about it can seem weird and crazy, Iโm talking the tone there is sometimes there is a certain tone that I can see why it would be triggering. The people who do stuff in public are weird and crazy and cringy. The people themselves are often neurodivergent to begin with and those people are by default weird and crazy. Itโs quick and knee jerk reaction to an odd new concept to them. These are often people who think the same thing about gender stuff, species stuff I think to them seems worse and even more wacky. I donโt think there always needs to be more to it. Maybe the people who have been more aware of it to the point they actively seek out things to cringe about and go after people could have more thoughts on the matter as they are spending more time thinking about it.
Once you think of being fictionkin as just being in an AU of your source, the world becomes more fun tbh
Sending some love today to fictionkin, particularly from superhero, sci-fi, or fantasy settings, who experienced kinds of trauma that have nothing in this universe to compare it to:
Injuries (both major and minor) that came from magic
Death, perhaps even more than once if revival magic existed in your source
Illnesses that don't exist in this world
Mind control/possession (might make a whole other post about this one)
Combat/getting in life threatening fights that involved magic or fictional weapons
Various spells, curses, or potions
Being stranded away from home in another planet/dimension/timeline
Apocalypses
Your trauma is real, even if it didn't happen right here, and you're not 'crazy' for feeling upset by it, even if there's no equivalent in this place. I know your non-kin friends might not always get it, and it's not typically something you can seek a therapist about, but your pain isn't 'stupid' no matter what anyone else thinks about it.

erm hello alterhuman community :3
Made some otherkin, therian, and otherhearted wooden keychains <3
3 of each in stock, $10 each (shipping not included). There are also two discounted ones due to blemishes.
My Ko-Fi shop is set only to accept orders from the US since I know the shipping costs. However, if you are outside the US and would like to buy, send me a DM and we can work shipping out :] (it may be really expensive tho :< )
As a young teen I was hesitant to identify as otherkin because I was worried it was a phase. Almost ten years, a degree, and a so-called "real world" job later, I'm still otherkin. In fact, I'm more comfortable with my alterhuman identity than ever. But even if it had been a phase? That would be okay. It doesn't make what I was experiencing at the time any less real.
