Wrote 1.2k words for CHDH today, bringing the total for the next chapter up to 4.3k. If I write it how I planned thereâs still like 2-3, maybe even 4 more scenes to write, so I definitely donât have an estimate on how long itâll take to finish, but Iâm trying. Thanks again for your patience. I know I say it a lot, but I really do mean it. I think I pinpointed when I started losing my motivation to write, it was around the time I lost my job last August. Since then itâs just been dwindling, but Iâm hoping I can keep writing. Itâs one of my favorite hobbies, just wish it came as easy as it used to. Thank you again!

summary: Lucy had been in a blooming high school romance, but now that the love has wilted between her and her husband, she searches for a solace. However, she finds it in an already broken man that manages to set her alight in more ways then one. When her secrets spill, she finds her world begins to crumble from beneath her feet as the two men in her life torture her already broken heart.
Although her dad had always pressured her to be feminine, she felt a sense of freedom when she dressed herself. Not in the way he wanted, of course. The way she wanted.
His idea of natural blush, hair tightly wound and holding the air of a lady when she was young wasnât something that Lucy had enjoyed in her childhood. Her private tutor made sure that she could hold an aspirin between her knees at all times. It made her father proud seeing her with a head held high and back straight as a board - the look of a daughter he could be proud of.Â
It wasnât until her late teens that she enjoyed fashion. No longer being held to the confines of what she had to wear, Lucy made bold choices - Many that were met with disapproval. It was exhilarating to learn new makeup looks and try out a pop of colour. Not that it was drastic by any normal person's standards, but to Lucy - she couldnât contain the confidence she felt. When she was able to choose her own looks, her own sense of self, she felt empowered and it gave her some control. Thatâs what Lucy had thought.Â
It was silly, but it brought a sense of gratification that she didnât think anyone could take away from her. They could try, just like her father had, but she would always bring her own flare to every style. Itâs what she had always been drawn to about beauty.
Her fingers traced over the cut on her lip first, brown eyes staring back at her whilst she looked in the mirror. Yet, it didnât look like her. The Lucy she saw was unfamiliar. Her skin was marred.Â
She looked ugly.
Staring back at herself, she felt like she was looking at a different person. Her chest felt numb whilst she pulled her eyes over every inch of herself that was available in Natsuâs small mirror. She had to swallow back the pain that she felt building in her chest, throat dry as she tried to bring some moisture into her mouth.Â
The Lucy she saw wasnât one her father would be proud of. It wasnât even someone that she was proud of.
The bruises on her neck had begun to turn yellow at the edges, resembling a smudge rather than the hand print that had previously painted the area on her pale skin. The cuts were scabbed over now, if they werenât sloppily wrapped by Natsuâs persistent care. Her eyes were bloodshot with a dark purple lining underneath them, showing the world of the sleepless nights she had since she had left Jackal.Â
Lucy didnât feel beautiful. And no matter how many times she carefully dabbed at her face, or held a tea bag against her eye hoping the bruising would clear, it stayed. It had dulled slightly, but Natsu had said those marks would be lingering for a while longer.Â
Her brown eyes flickered to the door, listening to the quiet mumbles of her ânew roommateâ and Gray, a friend of Natsuâs. Their voices were too hushed for her to know what they were talking about.Â
She assumed it was about her.Â
How crazy Natsu was for letting her stay here- How much of an idiot he was for getting involved with someone like her. Lucy had more than her share of baggage, and it was spilling shamelessly out into the open for everyone else to clean up.Â
She knew Gray was close to telling her to get out himself, or building Natsuâs courage to tell her that it was a mistake that he invited her in. A mistake to let her stay - she was a mistake.Â
It wasnât Natsuâs responsibility to pick up after her.Â
Her eyes burned. They felt raw from how many times she cried and furiously wiped at them. She didnât want to cry. It was too late to cry, but everytime she looked at the face staring back at her in the glass mirror, pools were forming in her eyes. It was the pathetic face of someone ugly. Stained and tarnished.Â
-
The dinner table had been pushed against the wall. Two chairs were missing from the side that now kissed the wall, the other two tightly tucked on the other side. Lucy became accustomed with the space that she now lived, the width of a single mattress between the side of the couch and one of the legs of a dining room chair.Â
The bed was bare, slightly beaten and worn. It was Gray's roommates, but he had no use for anymore. Now gifted to Natsuâs roommate - to her. Lucy heard brief mentions of the city that he had moved to after his mum died, but the two men werenât talking to her. They spoke quietly, in sentences that werenât finished and were left hanging between them as they stared at each other and Lucyâs new home. The space between the couch and the chair on Natsuâs floor.Â
Gray gave Natsu a hard pat on the back. âIf you need anything else just let me know.â
âMm,â Natsu let out a sigh. âThanks.â
Lucy looked up only to meet the dark haired man's stare. He didnât say anything, only a curt nod and an uneasy pull of the lips before he gave Natsu another pat down and flicked his keys from his pocket before opening the front door.Â
âSee ya!â
Natsu waved, and the fly wire shut with a rattle and a bang leaving the two alone. He stared hard at the mattress, a deep frown sinking onto his face and Lucy resisted the urge to shift her gaze. The air between them had been uncomfortable. Not much had been said, but not much needed to be. Natsu had been a silent protector, holding her as she screamed whilst she lost everything. Her marriage and her house. Her job.Â
âHow are you feeling?â His eyes were on her now and she resisted the urge to squirm in place.Â
Lucy twitched the sides of her lips up in a feigned smile. âBetter.â She looked away as she took in a breath, nodding towards the mattress. âThank you for all this.â
She had been sleeping in Natsuâs bed for the time being. He had taken the couch. Not that it helped. Lucy couldnât tell him that she didnât sleep in that room. She couldnât. She lay awake the first night and soon she preferred to sit on the floor until the sunrise. The room was painful to be in. This house was painful. Lucy wasnât thankful at all. She rather wished that she were dead.Â
Though, she pushed those thoughts down. It was only when she curled up in a ball and wept in the middle of the night that she truly wished that she would sink beneath the surface of the earth. It was much easier to be dead.Â
âMm.â The sound of the newly familiarised hum met her ears. âIâll get you something to eat.âÂ
Lucy twined her fingers together, digging her thumbs into her palms as she nodded. âSure.â Natsu had started âthe hum of disappointment,â as she called it, shortly after they started living together. It was around every corner of bad news that they continued to stumble across, to fill in the awkward lull as they made small talk and walked the invisible roads to avoid each other as much as possible.Â
âOkay.â He skulked towards the kitchen, beginning to bang around as he pulled out the staple food that they had both been living off for the past two weeks. Cornflakes.Â
Lucy made her way to sit across from him on the island bench. It had taken her a while to pick up her appetite again. She didnât feel hungry, only a sort of ache that started from the back of her throat all the way down to her stomach. She felt empty, but everytime she found the will to start eating, nausea replaced it. It turned to sickly mush in her mouth, much too sweet and much too bitter.Â
Cornflakes she found the easiest. Natsu liked to mix his with a cigarette and some sort of drink. Most of the time it was black coffee. This morning it was orange juice and vodka. Lucy screwed up her face.Â
Natsuâs eyes flickered to her face, lazily finishing the cereal as they ate in silence. This was what their meals looked like now. Cold milk and silver spoons clinking on Natsuâs chipped and cheap bowls.Â
If this had been before⌠Well, if they had made it out of bed. Lucy wouldâve made a comment on the state of his dishware - a cheeky remark that wouldâve possibly got her an elbow to the ribs, furrowed brows as Natsu wound his fingers between hers and said something in that voice he does just before heâs about to do something⌠mischievous.
âOh come on, Luce.â
And Lucy wouldâve laughed, smiling ear to ear as he trapped her in her seat and covered her with kisses. First to her neck as she squirmed in place until he began to leave a wet trail up her cheek with his tongue-Â
âIs everything okay?â Natsuâs voice cut in, the concern already thick in his tone as he slowly began to lower his spoon back down. âIs it the Cornflakes? I knowâŚâ He sighed. âI should really get you something proper to eat.âÂ
âMm.â Lucy pulled her eyes down.Â
That was before though. Now they sat together in silence until Natsu could feel even the slightest change in her face, the slightest hint that she could possibly be feeling dull and he would pounce on her. Lucy could see him berate himself in his eyes at every turn. The wear in his face showed that this was taking its toll on him. She felt as if she was his in house patient and he was at fault for the condition that she was in.Â
âNo, no⌠no.â She poked around the cereal. âJustâŚâ Lucy cleared her throat. âItâs a little early in the day for a drink, isnât it?â
âSometimes a day calls for drinking.âÂ
His whole face had been turned upside down, lines dragging down his eyes and mouth into a permanent grimace. She knew it was because of her. Natsu was tired. Tired of looking after some stranger who he thought was just a casual fling. She felt the tiniest twinge pull up the side of her mouth, a sick feeling to laugh because what else could she do. This was barely meant to be a one night side, her own self pity getting the better of her as she tried to show herself the love she couldnât give to herself with a man she didnât know.Â
Lucyâs stomach flipped.Â
Natsu used to be someone who always had a smile on his face, a certain light to his eyes that Lucy found an escape in. What she used to live through. Sure, he had his many habits from a heart that had been run a little thin. But, it was still warm and was welcoming people through the front door. Now he looked cold - like wet coals on a suffocated fire. And Lucy was the storm that snuffed him out.Â
She put down her spoon. The cereal had become soggy and she didnât feel like she could muster up her small appetite again. Lucy squeezed her hand around the edges of the stool, not tearing her gaze from the bowl. Her chest was filling up, squeezing tight around her bones as she tried to dismiss the flashes. The moments that led her to this moment, thinking of Jackal-
Natsu huffed, dragging a hand down his face. âIâm sorry. It was a late shift last night. Iâm just tired.âÂ
He looked up to the clock that Lucy had always lectured him about being set an hour and 32 minutes and 5 seconds ahead. She knew because she had timed it herself - a silly joke that escalated too quickly. She hadnât made that comment in awhile.Â
âItâll be another late one tonight too I imagine.â He didnât meet her eyes as he returned to down the rest of his glass. His finger thumbled along the bench as he put it down, letting the silence sink into both of them.Â
Lucy couldnât say much of anything. Â
Natsu sucked on his teeth, dark eyes drawn to the cup as if he was thinking about what he was going to say. Or maybe, he was waiting for her to speak. She wasnât sure anymore. Her mind was not giving her much relief about either two outcomes.Â
He hopped up. âWell, I really need to shower. Leâme know if you need anything.â Natsu stretched, before his hands fell - one almost reaching out to clasp her shoulder. But he recoiled, a wince coming onto his face as his eyes seemed to recognise her appearance once more - reminding him of the position they were in. âI-Iâll try to get some stuff from the shops soon.â
When she heard the click of the bathroom door Lucy made a move to gather the dishes. It wasnât much, but she had been silently showing her gratitude for all Natsu had done for her by trying to keep the house tidy. Sheâd make sure there was a blanket and pillow on the couch, his work clothes were clean for him by the time he had to get ready in the morning and there wasnât a trace that anyone, besides himself, breathed in the house. She pulled up her long sleeves, pushing out large puffs of air through her nose.Â
Lucy knew she was already crying. It wasnât something that she was in control of anymore. It didnât take long for her breathing to become laboured, shaky exhales leaving her as she tried to hold it in, but the sound of her sniffling already reached her ears. The hot flush in her face told her that she was as fragile as glass while her hands under the running water became blurry. She failed at rubbing her face with her forearm, biting on her tongue to quiet her sniffles as she cleaned the bowls.
There were so many reasons for her to be crying at this moment. Her body still ached in places where Jackal had touched her, just taking a breath was painful. He had taken everything from her - broken most of her belongings. Lucy felt like it had been her own fault, but because of that man she couldnât leave the house. What could she have told everyone at work? It was one thing to pass off a couple of irregular bruises on her arms and legs, but her face? The damage that he had caused wasnât something she could write off to someone. It was his fault that she got fired. That she had absolutely nothing to her name because he had used everything that she had.Â
On himself.Â
That she had thought that she had loved him and he chose to tear their life apart.Â
But the only thing she could think of was the guilt that was tearing her apart. The feeling of how she was no better than her husband as she continued to use the man that still opened his home to her after she had lied to him.Â
Pathetic. Thatâs how Lucy had felt. She didnât know who she was anymore, what kind of person she had turned into. But, it wasnât someone that she could be proud of. A few wrong turns⌠A few mistakes and somehow she ended up here.Â
As she switched off the water, her lips tugged down. The feeling that she greeted with open arms, once again sat within her chest. It had been making frequent visits before, but now it had permanently taken residence. The weight filled her rib cage as she gripped the edge of the bench whilst she furiously wiped at her eyes - ragged breaths, in and out.Â
Most of all she was guilty for feeling sorry for herself.Â
Her father had always called her a stupid little girl, and now she believed it. How stupid could she have been. Not only had she fooled herself with fantasies that Jackal was going to whisk her away, the first man to ever take the plunge to ask her on a date, but tricked herself a second time. Her hands tangled in her hair, in what world was Natsu going to be the âfixâ for her life. And not only had she ruined her own life but brought him along with her.
Lucy pulled her arms tighter against his torso, hands gripping tighter into the fabric of his shirt as she listened to Natsu breathe out a soft hum. The words were there, everything she needed to say in a simple sentence that she wanted to show him.
But it clogged at the bottom of her throat. Her lips remained sealed together, not moving as her mind echoed them louder as he smoothed down her blonde hair. It felt right. Yet, she couldnât push it out. The fear in her gut pulling it back down before she could spew it up in a nervous jumble.
Her brown eyes prickled with tears she refused to shed as her heart hammered in her chest. She had never imagined it would be so hard to tell someone that she loved them. And she feared that she never could.

His fingers twitched. The explosion of emotions began to make his blood boil as he threw the front door open, heart racing faster in his chest with every heavy step he took. This wasnât what he had been expecting - the yelling outside coming closer as he sucked in a large deep breath, glare searching everywhere as he looked for her.
Jackal hadnât been expecting this at all.
âWhere the fuck is she?â He yelled, voice filled with anger as he threw down the bag in his hands, contents spilling across the floor as he continued to run rampant in the house.
His hands were shaking and the thought crossed his mind to turn back around and put his fist through her car window, but he restrained himself. The easier target was in the house - images of how he was going to put her in her place flashing through his mind as he made a bee-line for the staircase.
âLucy!â Jackalâs hand tightened into a fist, nails piercing his palm from how tight he squeezed. âLucy, come out here now you fucking bitch!â

Damian didnât think that he would ever have to be brought down to such⌠horror in his life. He was one of the top students with the best grades. He was a Desmond. There wasnât ever a time that he wasnât treated with the utmost respect, and yetâŚ
He scowled, brows pinching together as he looked heatedly out the window of the bus and ignored the looming presence beside him. Assigned partners was the stupidest thing that he had ever heard and to partner him with her of all things. He questioned the gall of the teachers that had thought that he, Damian Desmond, should ever be put with the lowest commoner in their class, Anya Forger.
His face burned, clenching his fist into the fabric of his knee length school shorts and grit his teeth. Oh, he was going to have word with his butler when he got home, so he could disgrace the name of Eden Academy for their treatment of an elite member-
âSy-on boy⌠Youâre sweating.â
He whipped his head around, cheeks flushed a brilliant red as he gnashed his teeth together. âShut up, Ugly! Did I tell you that you could speak to me?!â
She stared dumbly at him with her stupid face that always looked dumb and stupid. He hated it, blood boiling as she looked at him like⌠like⌠like that! It was absurd and who did the professor think he was to buddy him up with her for the whole of their trip to the Ostanian Museum.
He let out a breath, closing his eyes as he tried to calm himself down. âJust leave me alone. I donât need you interrupting me.â Damianâs brow twitched, but he had to relax. He wasnât ignorant. This field trip was going to be tested, to see how much information that the students could retain and enforce their diligence. Not to mention they would be watched for every move they made out in public. Eden Academy didnât have any tolerance for embarrassment or mockery and a single step out of line could result in immediate expulsion if it tarnishes their pristine reputation. He had to stay attentive if he wanted a chance at another Stella.
His gaze wandered to her, taking in how she kicked her feet that hung off the bus seat and twiddled her fingers around the hem of her dress. She was a complete ditz and he couldnât help but sneer. She probably didnât have the slightest clue what was going on or how to behave as a high class citizen. Anya would see her time at Eden Academy end on this school trip.
Damian almost felt sorry for her.
âSit up straight. Are you trying to make a fool out of yourself?â She looked up surprised, rounded eyes and mouth hanging open as some stray pink hair fell in front of her eyes. His face was feeling hot again. âAnd stop fidgeting. Keep your hands on your lap like this. Itâs the least you can do to not embarrass me on this trip. You need to be on your best behaviour around me.â
He moved her arms into her lap, trying to touch the girl as little as possible as he bit back the weird emotions that were surfacing in his chest. âThere. Now what do you call me?â
Anya blinked before her grin broke out, nearly shouting as she started, âSy-â
âNo!â He grumbled. âThroughout this trip you need to address me as Lord Damian only.â

shout out to chapter 10 for being emotionally exhausting xÂ
âPlease,â The blonde whispered. âPlease, please, please. Just stop it.â Her hands pulled at her hair, palms covering her ears but she could still hear the scuffle on the floor - pained cries deafening her as she desperately tried to block it out. Though, every crack of a fist coming down sent sickening shocks through her body, again and again before the yelling filled her ears.

tw: Brief mention of abuse, mention of blood, aggressive language
Hearing the sound of wheels crunching against the road had never filled Lucy with so much fear and unease. It was the crunch as the taxi reversed, tyres smoothing over unsettled bitumen near the driveway before the car picked up speed and took off down the street. Each crackle had her feet tingling, the shivers climbing all the way up her back while she tried to swallow down the lump in her throat.
âDeep breaths.â Natsu squeezed her hand beside her. âIâm right here with you.â
The blonde didnât tear her eyes from the house in front of her, taking in a deep steady breath to try and calm her nerves. âOkay.â
It didnât help. Lucy felt cold, fingers numb in his grasp as he held onto her tightly. The world was dissipating from around her. The only focus being the building in front of her and the nerves that were sending a prickle from the bottom of her spine all the way to the base of her neck. She resisted the urge to shiver, to shake the feeling away. She knew that it wasnât going anywhere.
Natsu stood firm, anchoring her in place. He felt like a heavy shadow more than anything else. A shadow that Lucy didnât want. She had tried to tell him that she needed to do this on her own, but of course he hadnât listened. Natsu had made a promise and he intended to keep it.
Even though it only increased the jitters that she was feeling.

When Natsu had told Lucy he needed to show her something, she had been expecting a brand new scheme to prank Gray or Erza. Though her best friend was unpredictable, he left a trail of repetitive behaviours that she had clutched onto that kept her head from rolling in his spontaneous bursts that had once left them chased by the police. She had expected fireworks, an atrocity that he had made in the kitchen, or even a second stray cat that would keep Happy company.
Lucy hadnât anticipated that this⌠this is what he would reveal to her.
They had stopped outside the East Forest just outside of town. He had left his pickup truck on the side of the road with the nose of the car beginning to bury itself in the brown and green foliage. A curious gaze had measured up the tall trees that grew thicker further in, until there was only a myriad of trunks that the eye could see. Her hands came up, rubbing across her upper arms in order to bring some heat to her cold skin - she definitely hadnât dressed for the occasion.
âWhere are you taking me, Natsu?â Her voice called, flicking her attention towards the male that was double checking the lock on the truck. Natsu twisted the key in the door, pulling the handle twice on the old vehicle before he turned to her.
His lips were set into a line, expression unnaturally stony before he released a sigh. âYouâll see.â
Lucy followed closely behind him. Well, tried to. His pace was quick, treading a path that she could only assume that he had walked many times before whilst she tripped and stumbled. Her eyes flittered from the scenery around her to his broad shoulders and then her feet - never any time to stay fixed on one as they went deeper and deeper into the forest.
The vegetation was by no means an easy feat in her short strappy heels. Her breathing became more laboured and Lucy grimaced when she sunk down into something soft beneath the leaves, feeling it slip and slide under the flat of her shoe. When they finally came to a halt she had collided straight into his back, her hands welcoming the body warmth but her face detesting the solid frame it had hit.
âWeâve been walking for ages.â She rubbed at her nose, a pointed glare being sent to her friend as she grumbled, âYou could have warned me just where we were going. Itâs so cold!â
Natsu stayed silent, not facing her whilst she continued to ramble.
âI mean seriously. These heels are probably ruined now,â She whined, taking in her surroundings slowly and filling the odd silence that had settled between them. âYou never think ahead. It still wouldâve been a surprise even if you had told me to wear something for hiking.â
âLucy.â Natsu called, bringing her to stop and gaining her attention. âPlease.. Just stop talking for once. I need you to listen to me.â
âHey! You donât have to be so-â
Without another warning he stripped off his jacket, throwing it to the forest floor. Lucy raised a brow, feeling an uneasiness begin to build in the pit of her stomach. Natsu was always weird, but this wasnât normal by any standards. He breathed in a deep breath, taking in the smell of the Earth around them before finally moving to face her. His actions were hesitant, fingers working the buttons of his flannel as he looked her dead in the eye.
âNatsuâŚWhatâs going on,â She asked, voice just above a whisper as his gaze glinted in the shadow of the overhanging trees.
He rolled his shoulders, baring himself completely in front of her as the button up dropped to his feet. âThereâs something I never told you about this town, Luce⌠Something I never told you about myself.â His eyebrows drew together, lips twisting as the first sign of emotion finally crossed his face. âIâm not what you think I am.â
Though, Lucy was barely listening to him anymore. Her hand came up to catch the breath that left her lips and her eyes widened in shock, feet shuffling back as she stared at his chest. There sat a deep angry scar etched into his skin. Thick white lines ran in curves over his bicep and just below his rib cage as it formed a symbol that she didnât recognise. Though the skin showed signs of the injury being healed from time, it still held a pink tinge that lined the edge of the bumps. It made Lucy feel sick, her gut twisting as she desperately tore her face back to look at him instead of the disfigurement on his chest.
She shook, eyes glassy as she tried to speak. âW-what.. Is that? Natsu, who did this to you?â

tw: Brief mention of abuse

The sound of a dull thud stirred Lucy awake that morning. She was warm, fingers tightening over the blanket that she had pulled over her chest and she snuggled further into the soft cushion beneath her. It was comforting, though she had definitely felt better days. There was a fog in front of her mind as she let the heat wrap around her, an ache that started around her hips and throbbed all the way around her body incessant on making itself known as soon as she tried to dive back into the lull of sleep. Her eyelids were heavy, already stinging from the light that was peeking in from her bedroom windows, but she refused to meet its bright rays today.
She was tired and in pain - Lucy wanted nothing more than to rest.
A loud clatter jolted her upright before she could let the confines of her exhaustion wrap around her. Her puffy brown eyes snapped open, taking in the living room around her to then whip her head to look at the source of the noise coming from behind her.
Natsu was there, his face turned towards her like a deer caught in headlights as he clutched a cup in his hands that seemed to have fallen off the bench. Lucy had to adjust her eyes as he settled it down, lips already pulling up as he brought his hand up to scratch at the back of his head.

Natsu stared intensely at the display stand, eyes racking over the wind instruments for sale as he ran his hand across his chin. He wasnât sure where Lucy and Happy had run off to. Their team had stopped in a market place after an easy mission so he assumed his partners had dispersed to the many stalls along the street.
The noise of the rambunctious activities was loud and Natsuâs eye twitched slightly from the overload of sounds, his noise also pulling up from the many smells that were lingering in the air. He wasnât a fan of busy places, but a particular shop had garnered his attention from the hustle and bustle that usually had him opting to stay in the less crowded areas.
Natsu had never been one to play instruments. There were far too many complexities surrounding them, and he usually ended up breaking things that were so delicate. Yet, the small musical tools stirred a memory.
He and Lucy had been passing through a different town, another mission from a year ago, when they had stopped for supplies. They were only on the street for a few moments, but they didnât miss the performer that had started to gather a crowd a few ways up ahead. The notes were light, a mystical tune floating through the street that perked up Natsu from where he had stopped, readjusting his heavy bag whilst Lucy had been talking with Erza.
They had all stopped, attention being drawn to the player with a small flute-like object pressed to their lips - the calming melody bringing a new charm to the little street that was lined with odd shops and people. Lucy had sighed, a hand coming to her face as she smiled.
âWow, an ocarina! I havenât heard someone play in forever.â
He turned to her, gaze shifting from the busker to his blonde partner. Erza had nodded with her own lips curved up as they paid all their regard to the source of the beautiful song.
âI canât say Iâve heard it before. Itâs beautiful.â
âWhen mama was still alive, we would sit in the gardens as she played. Ah, this brings back so many memories.â
The group had left shortly after. Not staying long as they had to meet with the requester for their mission, but Natsu didnât forget the glassy eyed look Lucy had sent the musician before they had to part.
âHey,â He started, âHow much for the pink one?â
The stall keeper looked up from where he sat on his stool. âThe ocarina? Well,â He hummed, leaning back as he eyes Natsu up. âA thousand jewels.â
âIâll take it.â He reached for his backpack, taking out his hidden money in the smallest zip before handing it to the salesman. They nodded, Natsu picking up the small instrument that was smooth under his finger tips. âHave a good one!â
He waved over his shoulder after he turned, disappearing into the crowd as he set after his blonde haired teammate. Though, it didnât take him long with his keen nose - picking up the trail of vanilla with something weird.
âNatsu!â She called as he came into sight, holding up her hand. She was leaned up against the wall of a shop near the end of the market way, Happy next to her as they both looked at him. âWhereâve you been? I thought you would be the one waiting around for us.â
He tilted his head. âYou didnât buy anything?â
Lucyâs shoulderâs dropped, a pout forming on her face as Happy snickered.
âIt was too expensive for Lucy!â He pressed his paws to his mouth and the blondeâs brow visibly ticked.
She grit her teeth. âMaybe if I wasnât housing two literal black food holes, I would be able to have a little bit of spending money!â
Natsu chuckled, outstretching his hand to show her the ocarina in his hand. It was small, about the size of his palm and the pink stuck out brilliantly in the sunshine. âLucky I bought this for you then. Whatâd ya say, Luce? We even?â
She blinked at the gift in his hands before they blew wide.
âN-Natsu!â She gasped, stepping forward as she took the ocarina in her hands. âThis is..â
âI remember you mentioned something about likinâ âem. So, I thought-â
Though, he didnât get to finish his sentence as Lucy wrapped her arms around him, pulling him tightly against her as she buried her head in his chest. âThank you, Natsu.â
âIâm glad you like it.â He grinned, putting his own arm around her waist.Â
Headcanon : even though she was reluctant at first, Anya likes studying with Damian because when he is working his thoughts are calm and composed đđ
I couldnât resist writing for this Lai. I hope you like it even if itâs just short and sweet!

If two plus two is four... And then I can carry the one and... nine multiplied by ten...
Anya sighed, her face falling further into her hands as she stared at Damian work. Her elbows were propped up on the table and she let the tips of her shoes rest against the floor lazily - her own work forgotten and pencil rolled away from her blank paper. He hadn't noticed her gaze as his lips pursed and brows pinched together whilst he worked. Damian was studying hard on their maths homework, completely absorbed as he wrote furiously on his page, which Anya shouldâve been doing as well but...
Exactly! Thatâs it. If I can just divide the whole sum by...
The boyâs thoughts across from her were too distracting. At first she was just trying to get the answers for their work packet, too tired from following Pa on his last mission the night before to get through the question sheet. Though, his voice... It was much softer than the one he used when he spoke to her.Â
Think, Damian... You can do this.
Anya blinked slowly, letting her eyes close as she focused on the mumbling from his thoughts that soothed her. There was a few times that he stumbled, hazing over as he pulled different methods through his head to find the solution to the next problem, but he soon worked it out - following along to the next and then the next. It was relaxing when he wasnât yelling. His mind completely at ease whilst he studied and Anya had never listened to a more clear voice, the noise from the outside world fading as she just listened to his thoughts alone.Â
Last question.. Long division..
Her eyes were completely closed now. If Sy-on boy spoke to her like this normally then she might find it a lot easier to be his friend. The calm tone causing the lack of sleep to wash over her as her head dropped further into her hands. Her lips quirked up into a smile.Â
Then the answer should be.. 12!
This was nice.
She didnât notice when she couldnât hear anything else, her mind completely closing off as she slipped further down into the table till her cheek was flush against her arm, now completely resting. Anya was just so tired and she could feel the weight settle as she slipped into a nap. She was too far gone when the blanket was slipped over her shoulders, or when a hand smoothed her pink hair behind her ear. She sniffled, but only a hum left her lips as she felt... comfortable.Â
Tch, Such an idiot... Sleeping before the test.
She supposed she shouldnât follow Pa on missions anymore on a school night.Â
The laughter turned into a quiet hum, Lucyâs grin falling into a soft smile as Natsu seemed to be entranced as he curled his fingers through her golden blonde tresses.
âWhat is it?â She asked, eyes musing onto his own. Her voice still held the light heartedness from her chuckle, nice and easy going as the simple question rolled off her lips.
He blinked, eyes flickering back into focus on her. âIs nothing,â Natsu murmured and his fingers stopped their movements as they tangled in her hair. A pause. âI just... havenât seen you smile in awhile.â
She felt her cheeks warm, the words causing a sting to the cheery mood that had fallen onto them. Brown eyes looked down as she pulled on her bottom lip with her teeth. Yet, the flutter in her chest refused to subside even with the reminder that it had been awhile since it was there.
âYeah,â she sighed, flittering her gaze back to him as he stared at her with such concentration she could see the line begin to form between his brows. âIt feels good... Iâve- Iâve missed it.â

Summary: Anya and Damian have been assigned a project together and the two work after school to get the assignment done. If they can even manage to get that⌠** Iâve aged them both up to what would be 12yo though we donât exactly know Anyaâs age but somewhere around there.

To say that Anya was disappointed to learn that Damian Desmond lived in the Eden Academy dorms was an understatement. She had tried her hardest after these few long years to befriend the boy, not that it had particularly gone well, so that she could visit his house and help Papa in his goal for world peace. The weight of the world was resting on her small shoulders after all.
Yet, now as she stood outside the door after Mama had dropped her off and sent her on her way with a quick kiss and thoughts of she could justify breaking Desmondâs fingers if he upset her, she couldnât help but feel frustrated. Fate had given her a chance to save the world and help Papa that no longer involved long grueling hours of studying for Stellaâs, and stupid Sy-on boy had ruined it.
She knocked on the door with a small closed fist, banging hard. Papa had told her it was polite to knock. Less suspicious and easy to check if anyone was home before a spy should start to pick a lock.
âSy-on boy!â She shouted. âOpen!â Her cheeks puffed as she listened to the muffled and annoyed thoughts of the young boy who was making his way to the door. If anyone had the right to be angry it was her. If he could just live with his father then she wouldnât be stuck studying with Uncle Yuri every Sunday and forced to record Spy Wars because Papa said no cartoons until she finished her homework. Anya couldnât be bothered. In all her hard work at the Academy she had only got three Stellaâs and none of them had been from perfect test scores unlike Sy-on boys. It was all her spy training that had got her -
The door opened to reveal a disgruntled face. âWhat do you want?â His droopy eyes were narrowed, his lips turned down into an uneasy frown as he stared down at her - cheeks slightly flushed.
Anya didnât budge as she ignored his usual rudeness, blank faced. âProject.â
âSo? You really going to think Iâm going to do a project with some loser like you?â He rolled his eyes as he leaned against the door, giving her that stupid arrogant smile that she would like to punch off his face just like when she had first met him. Papa had said to be nice, but he made it hard. There was something about him that had Anya feeling slightly irked whenever she looked at him.
She blinked as he kept talking. âPlease. Donât give yourself any credit! Youâll only weigh me down.â
âBut -â Anya looked past him, seeing the dorm behind him empty and she tightened her hands on the straps of her backpack. She knew he was expecting her, the thoughts betraying him as she saw how he had already set the table with snacks and a jug of milk. He was confusing, but it just made it easier as she shrugged. âIf Sy-on boy is ok with failing. Fine.â She tried to turn around or attempted to, but his hand clamped on her shoulder and twisted her back around and into the large house.
âLetâs just get this over with.â He grumbled, Anya trailing behind with the hint of a smirk on her face as she dropped her school bag next to the chair of the dining room. Her legs dangled off the edge as she sat down, feet grazing the ground but not touching like the boy who sat across from her. His eyes turned down in annoyance at his pencil before flicking them up to the snacks set in front of them.
âDonât think I set this out for you or anything. It was the house maid. She always does this.â A lie, but Anya chose to ignore it as he flicked his gaze back to her as he continued to speak. âSince Iâm such a good host Iâll let you have some but only -â
Yet, Anya was already reaching, leaning across the table as she tried to grab hold of a cookie placed in the middle of the table. She looked over as he stopped talking, both their eyes wide as she slowly curled her greedy fingers around the treat set out for them.
âIf you.. Finish your part.â
She didnât waste any time as she pulled back, shoving the whole cookie into her mouth as he watched in shock. Anya tried to swallow it whole, but the tears formed in her eyes as she felt a burning dryness at the back of her throat. Her small hands grabbed at her neck as she tried to take a breath.
âHey! I told you to not eat any yet-â His tone tried to sound angry, but his hands were rising in concern as he scooted closer to the girl whose face was turning redder by the second. âAre you.. Okay?â
Anya heaved forward, quickly chewing the cookie as she tried to swallow it all down. She didnât think anything else was harder to eat than Mamaâs cooking, but she mustâve been mistaken as she took in large gulps of air. Her eyes were watering, small tears building up in the corners of her eyes that threatened to fall as she looked back up at Damian.
âG-goodâŚâ She raised a shaky thumbs up at him.
His eyebrows drew in, but his lips were twisting into something indecipherable. His cheeks were flushing and Anya thought he looked a bit sweaty. This happened a lot with Sy-on boy. Sometimes he would get red and he would look even more stupid than usual. Even his thoughts were stupid as they clashed together and were practically unreadable to Anya as it fizzled so much inside his head.
Sometimes she thought he would explode, but it hasnât happened. Yet.
âYouâre an idiot! Havenât your parents ever taught you any manners, Commoner?â He was angry at her as he yelled. âI swear youâre just so⌠so -â
Cute.
Anya blinked before she looked down at her hands. âA spy⌠should always be polite.â Papa and Bondman were always nice. Itâs why she had to be nice to Sy-on boy. If youâre polite then your target wonât expect a thing as you lowered their defences. Manners were in some situations, just like episode 35, the most important part of a spyâs mission.
She tightened her hands into fists before she looked up, her eyes sparking with new determination as she cut the boy sitting next to her up with her hard stare. âI am sorry for eating your cookie, Sy-on Boy!â She leaned in, her expression deadly serious as she reached out and cupped his face. This was just like what Bondman did to the princess in Spy Wars when she told him the passwords to her fatherâs vaults.Â
âPlease forgive me⌠Sweetheart.â
He said nothing as Anya continued to hold his cheek, her eyes were stuck to his as she then did the next move. Awkwardly she moved her thumb across his freckled cheek. This was it. She had him. He would be dying to have her over his real house now. Maybe he would invite her over during the break and she could bring Bond? As well as Papa of course.
Yet, as Damianâs mouth parted, Anyaâs eyes practically shining as she had to hold in the smirk that was threatening to pull up on her lips, his face burned into a bright shade of crimson.
âGet off of me!â He screamed as he threw her hand off his face. âWhatâre you⌠How could you even thinkâŚâ Damianâs eyes were blown wide, his hands shaking as he stared at her incredulously. âGet out! Get out now!â
âBut Sy-on boy -â
âNo!â He stood up abruptly, pushing her out of her seat as he grabbed her bag. Anya didnât have a choice as he grabbed onto her arm and dragged her to the door, swinging it open as he pushed her out the door. âI never want to see you here again.â
âBut -â
âGet out of here Ugly!â He threw her bag into her awaiting hands, barely catching it as she fumbled on his front step. Without another word he slammed the door shut on her face and Anya could only stare at the place he had been as she tried to process what she had done. She had done everything that Bondman had done⌠Where had she gone wrong with Sy-on boy?
Anya groaned. World peace really was doomed now⌠Not to mention they didnât get any work done on the project.

Lucy brought her fist down on the door. It was two raps until she forced herself to pull her arm away. She didnât mean for them to come down as harshly as they sounded, loud and impatient as they echoed around the dingy apartment, but she was ansty. The nervousness made her rise on the balls of her feet as her stomach twisted and pulled whilst she waited for Natsu to respond.
But, he didnât.
âNatsu? Everything okay in there?â She tried to keep her voice soft, yet she couldnât hide the strain in her throat as she kept her hand clenched by her side. It had been too long - he had been in there too long. The clock was ticking by and more minutes were passing that the silence echoed around their apartment. Lucy didnât want to overreact. If she overreacted then she didnât trust him, which she did. If she hadnât then she wouldnât have moved in with him - She wouldnât have believed in him to start their small family when they were just seventeen.
They had Nashi and they were working on being better - he was working on being better. He had promised that he had come off the drugs. Lucy didnât want to doubt him. Though, the sense of dread beginning to hollow out her chest as she stood outside the door made her feel uneasy - namely the silence that followed after her calls.
âNatsu?â
He stared at the roof, eyes glazed. The needles were laid at his side as he let the coolness of the tiles press against his flushed skin. He closed his eyes, the warmth spreading through his veins and making his heartbeat slow to a soothing pace. There was a muffled noise reaching out to him, but there was something in him that told him to ignore it. It wasnât important at the moment. All that mattered was the mould that made shapes on the ceiling - beautiful and mesmerising as he picked out every single one, breathing a name into it as he let his mind rest in his imagination.
Natsu was in heaven.
âHey.â Lucy jiggled the doorknob again. âCan you open up?â She bit her lip as her mind circled through the thoughts in her head, heart beating faster as the minutes ticked by. âI uh.. I need some help with Nashi.â It was a lie, spat through clenched teeth, but she needed him to come out. Lucy needed to know that he was okay.
Yet, he didnât hear her from where he sat in the bathroom. Natsu was too far gone. The dose had been bigger than before, injecting a hundred dollars straight into the protruding vein in his forearm. The skin there showed the signs of being previously prodded, pink holes that told the story of how he had tried - that he had done his best to be clean for a few months. Now, the red dot spoke of how the pressure had got to him, adding to the tale that was etched permanently on his skin.
Relapse was always something that he was afraid of, but now it didnât matter. None of it mattered as he saw further, past the anxiety and the depression that weighed heavily on his shoulders, and into the light of the world. How soft it was around him, even the pads of his fingers feeling the small electricity buzzing around him as he rested his palms against the bathroom floor.
Lucy brought her hand down on the wood again. âNatsu! Open this door. Now!â This time she didnât control how hard she hit, or how many times she brought her knuckles against the wood. She knocked harder and harder as she started struggling to breathe. The longer he stayed silent the more images flashed into her head - the glazed over eyes, the used and dirty needles, how she was banging on a different door when he overdosed at his friends house before they were meant to go on a date.
On that night⌠she had thought she was going to lose him.
âIâm begging you, please!â She was shouting as she pounded on the door with two fists. âAnswer me.â Her shoulders were heaving. The air not being able to be taken in fast enough as the panic rippled through her chest, her throat constricting as her eyes watered. âPlease, please, please. Natsu! Speak to me- anything!â
He had missed this, his head bobbing as he smiled to himself. Every tension in his body had melted away, the muscles in his shoulders finally able to relax as his neck swayed slightly from side to side. Green eyes were rolling back as the euphoria took over, penetrating every cell in his body as he tingled with pleasure. It was a warm embrace. This was home, and Natsu had been so entirely home sick.
Nashi had woken up now, screaming from her cot beside their bed as Lucy kicked at the door knob. It hurt her foot, bruising the sole as she repeatedly used all her strength to bash it down. She would have to explain to the landlord after, she would have to pay for the damages with money she didnât have - that they didnât have because Natsu had probably used his last pay check to get another hit.
Yet, she kept trying, the tears bubbling over and sliding down her cheeks as she kept shouting. âNatsu! Donât do this to us.â She pressed her face against the bathroom door, swallowing down a sob as she pleaded to someone that was already over the edge - too gone to hear the cries spilling from the only people left who cared about him. âThink of Nashi. Remember what you said! You said this would be different - t-that we would be against all of this. Donât you remember what you promised? Natsu!â
He let his body slide across the tiles as he slumped. Natsu didnât feel anything - everything around him fading as he lost himself to the drug coursing through him. No matter how far he strayed, it would always find him one way or another. Thatâs what addiction was. A dependency on what would always take him back no matter how he failed, how many times he stumbled and let them down. It was always ready to take him back to bliss.
The handle broke off as Lucy swung down the mallet. They had used it when they were setting up their furniture, a cheap flat pack that they shuffled into place to start the small space that they called home. Now, it was used to bust open the locked bathroom, denting the flimsy metal a few too many times before it finally got the doorknob to come loose. With everything she had in her, she pushed into their dingy bathroom that was adjacent to their bedroom.
Her breathing was heavy, shoulders shaking as she finally reached Natsu. Yet, the sight of her boyfriend on the floor sent tremors rattling through her entire being before she was desperately trying to get to his side. He wasnât responsive, all his body weight crushing her as she pulled him onto her. The tears wouldnât stop, the screams tearing through her throat as she called for help, but it was unlikely that anyone would come - not in the neighbourhood where she lived.
This wasnât a life that Lucy had wanted. When she had pictured her dream life it was a white picket fence in the suburbs and married to a fine young man who had a good job. It wasnât supposed to be scraping by as they dropped out of their final year of highschool, a pregnancy at sixteen that made her father cut her off. She wasnât meant to be holding the person she loved most so tight in the fear that maybe, this time, they wouldnât come down from their high.
Yet, that was the beauty of the needle - its sharp edge dug into more than just yourself. Heroin was selfish and spread the pain deep. Deeper than Natsu had ever thought his drug addiction could run as the life they had both hoped for spiralled.
