Took a swing at hot-gluing together the prototype mask posted immediately below. The hot glue didnāt seem to want to solidify, oddly, so that thatās a loss : (
April 6, 2020: Minor Update:
Transferred my rough mask patterns to thin, cheap EVA foam sheet. I wanted to accomplish something... I suppose I should hot glue these together, next. Still very nervous about all of that... Iām afraid any mistake is just going to poison me against this costume for another month or more. Low on glue sticks and reluctant to buy any supplies or raw materials, online or in person.

This is the clip I sewed to the top of my cloak, to keep it shut. Pretty sloppy stitching, but it works. You can also see the green twill tape I used to reinforce the back seam. I should probably put some bias tape on the neckline to tidy that up.
Update: Feb. 25, 2020
Got my heat gun, and elastic, etc, in the mail today. Still horribly nervous about using it at all, let alone indoors.
Update: Feb. 23, 2020 II
Have roughed out a paper pattern for the mask. Will need to transfer to EVA foam sheets and assemble. Likely will need some tweaking / tailoring, especially around the eyes. And then will have to cut air holes, too.
Bought a heat gun & some elastic strapping from Amazon. Should be here by Tuesday.
Update: Feb. 23, 2020 I
Went shopping this morning. Did not find a decent heat gun :(
Found an OK āpirate hatā at the party store, which will do for the base of my plague doctor hat, I hope. Gonna start on the mask & hat today.
Gotta eat lunch first.
Update: Feb. 22, 2020
Tried the āinvisibleā cuff stitch again, to no avail.
I did manage to put a small plastic clip at the top of my cloak to keep it secure.
Went to the bank and picked up some āgoldenā dollar coins for the ren fair.
Discovered my thin sheets of EVA foam are way too floppy to form the brim of my hat. Iāll have to hit the party store and see if I can get one of those gaucho-style flat, wide brimmed hats, and work off that. Anything else would have to come from eBayĀ : /

Update: Feb 21, 2020 III
Sewed in the other pocket. Both turned out pretty well. Theyāre slightly belowĀ where my pockets usually are, but the size is fine, and the sewing seems sound.
Narrowed the ends of both sleeves, too. Not sure if Iām gonna bother to sew a fake cuff on them or not. I may experiment (again) with the āinvisibleā pants cuff stitch on my machine.
Update: Feb 21, 2020 II
Spent some time sewing. Reinforced the back center seam. Attempted to make some pockets, without really looking up an instructions. Which was a mistake. Ended up wasting some material trying to make pockets first, then sew them into the side seams. Which I couldnāt quite accomplish. Then I cut some new pocket material, sewed it to the side seams first, and then closed up the pocket. That went much better. Took forever, and the machine jammed on me a couple times. Ugh.
One pocket down, one to go.
Update: Feb. 21, 2020
Got out my black gloves for this and messed with them a little. Tried to sew the wrists a little bit tighter. Trimmed some little bits of junk off the inside. Tried to shrink the hand area by getting them damp and then heating them. Little to no noticeable effect. Finally rubbed them with a little Huberdās leather oil.
Got out my cloak and ... uh ... looked at it... Still too wide in the chest area, methinks, but I can probably live with that.
Took a couple photos of my head, and superimposed the plague doctors from Solomon Kane on top of them. It gives me a good idea of how big the mask & hat have to be. Bigger than I thought.
Found my pack of EVA craft foam sheets. I should have plenty for the hat and the mask, I hope. Bought a can of contact cement some days ago for gluing foam to foam. Should also work for cloth to foam, etc. Also have a roll of black tulle for blacking out the eye holes & air holes in the mask.
Weather next weekend looks perfect for going out to the ren fair in this. If I can get it finished. Iām getting very nervous about starting the mask, the hat, etc. I still want a heat gun to help shape & seal the EVA foam. And thereās still some sewing I want to do on the cloak (sleeve cuffs, hems, pockets(?)), plus making the head covering / hood thing.

In case anyone likes creepy bird imagery ; )
Update: January 28, 2020
Got my black leather gloves in the mail. Fit is pretty good, but Iād like to try and shrink them a bit to tighten them up. I plan to get a heat gun some time in the next three weeks, so it will come in handy for that as well.

Update: January 27, 2020
Impulsively started a new costume project yesterday, so my Plague Doc is on pause for a bit.
I did take in the sides a few inches, and itās still annoyingly wide. I may simply leave the width at that. I feel like I want to reinforce some more of the seams (front center and back center).
Gloves should arrive tomorrow. Looked up how to make welt pockets (actually jetted pockets?) and they seem quite complex. Iāll check my instructions for something simpler.
Progress Update: January 25, 2020
All four pieces of the body have been staystitched. Front halves and back halves were sewn together. The top arm & shoulder seams have been sewn together. The sleeve ends have been hemmed (but may need cuffs added). The under arm seams have been sewn together. Iāve put together a buckle thingy to keep the top of the neck closed.
The top of the neck and buckle thingy will have to be hidden by the hood. The body of the garment is still very wide, and I want to take that in when I sew the side seams : /
Ordered some black leather gloves for this as well.
EDIT: Still feel like I may need some pockets. I want to be able to have easy access to my phone and to carry some golden dollar coins for the Ren Fair. Didnāt originally want to add a belt & pouches, but I may have to.
