I canโt stop thinking about Hyper Knife & sadly itโs not immensely popular/known in the west compare to Asia rn. So do u think Deokhee and Seok r lovers by the end of the show or just beyond that as soulmates forever connected but platonic or both? lol
well, the questions is what do you need to consider them as lovers? this show isn't the romance genre, so you could go that therefore it doesn't have a love line (not a traditional one anyway). do you need a love confession where it is literally spelled out? a kiss, sex, or anything of the sorts to tell you directly their relationship is romantic or sexual or both? if that is what you need to define two people as lovers, then they probably aren't in the canon narrative of the show.
to me, they are soulmates, twin flames, anything else you could put here. they are it for each other, the only other person in this world who understands the other and who cares about the other and who inspires every possible feeling of the human condition on each other. they change each other's lives when they meet, their lives become so wholly interwoven that there are significant before and afters in their respective lives because of each other. their first scene in the rain (and the ep8 addendum) in front of the hospital is literally called the confession scene by show writer kim.
they were teacher and student. they are diametrically opposed, they are the same, deokhee is seok and seok is deokhee, they metaphorically have the same dna in their brain, seok's happiest memory is of deokhee, deokhee's happiest time in his life with seok, she saves his life, he only wants to be killed by her. they murder for each other as a mutual sign of their devotion and their care. seok hated deokhee with a burning passion for six years because she revered and was obsessed with him for all the time before. deokhee thought her brain was perfect the moment they met. when asked, deokhee laughs off that she wasn't in love with him but with his brain. seok outrightly calls herself his. deokhee never declined that he loves seok, no, he just kept a tail on her for six years. deokhee thought of himself as a singular genius until he met seok. his death was supposed to be her victory, his final gift to her. she gifts him more life because after she got him back all she wants is for him to stay. no one gets to open deokhee's skull but seok. seok only ever wanted to surpass deokhee, never anyone else.
make of that what you will.

He had his eye on you. His eye on me? I don't get it.
HYPER KNIFE (2025) dir. Kim Jung-hyun
hyper knife was so good not only bc it was a thriller but because the main leads had a great dynamic where the FL called a lot of the shots without being the empty girl boss of so many other recent kdramas, she got to be worse than the ML and the ML still adored her and was obsessed with her without sacrificing his own character, and neither of them had a random-ass character switch to be mind-numbingly servile. like i donโt know if i am explaining it right, but most ml/fl duos (in kdrama) have only one character be fully fleshed out while the other is left behind - either the green flag male lead without personality or the vapid girl boss female lead that turns into a house wife - to make the relationship look more appealing, but hyper knife doesnโt want to be appealing.
even non-love line shows turn their main dynamics into witless drivel these days and i am so glad hyper knife didnโt turn out this way. deokhee wasnโt a hapless old man because of his age or his illness, and seok wasnโt just a one-faceted evil girl boss with nothing underneath. they both got to be chaotic and depraved and devoted and humane and awful and it made every moment of the show better. together they were like a car crash and a supernova at the same time, which only happened because they both were whole people in the narrative, especially seok, who could have easily fallen sideways in the latter half of the show or could have only be seen as a full character because it is said she is just like deokhee, but instead the show had deokhee be the one to repeat several times that he is also the one who is just like her, which unravels him more than her. he has to show the depths of that statement, not seok. how refreshing.

This is the right question
What if you were an orphan with no prospects, but you had a brain that just wouldn't shut off and it tormented you and you couldn't sleep or relax or feel peace and you put that brain to use to get accepted into medical school at 17 and the first time you fell in love was when you saw an OPEN BRAIN and it changed your life forever and you didn't care about relationships or family or anything, only surgery, and you became the best neurosurgeon in the country. And what if you met a student who everyone hated because she's arrogant and impulsive and reckless and she writes on her application that her brain doesn't shut off and she can't sleep and the only beauty she sees is in surgery so much that she wants to DIE in the OR and what if you realized you two are exactly the same? And what if she asked you to give her everything, all of your knowledge, all of your skill, don't hold back any of it, give her all of it. And what if you pushed her away as much as you praised her, because you saw too much of yourself in her, and when you find out she's killed people, you ask her 'can you take care of the body on your own?' because what you're really asking is 'do you need my help?' and she beams because she sees it too. And when someone tries to poach her you kill him - because of course, how could anyone think to take something that belonged to you? You gave her everything and she was yours. And she understands that too, because she has things and people that are HERS, and you are HERS as much as she is YOURS.
So to keep her at your side you made her hate you, and she cut you with a scalpel, and she strangled you, and she BEGGED you on her knees in the rain to keep teaching her, and you had her stripped of her medical license, and worst you turned her away and she HATES you. But you never hated her, years later you can't help smile as you see photos of her, and you track her down and tell her only she can perform the surgery to remove the tumor in your brain, and you shut down her pharmacy, you kill her dogs, you make her life a living hell, and you also keep the police off her scent and you kill for her, because she's YOURS and you're always so surprised when she's EXACTLY like you are, so much more than you want to admit, because you flinch at the darkness in yourself, but she lives without shame.
And she SEES you, she sees all the ugly parts of you, that you're a killer, selfish, an egomaniac, and she doesn't flinch, she celebrates, and she cries and says she'll do your surgery because you've lied to her, the cancer is terminal and you're dying and no surgery will fix that, but this is the last lesson you want to give her because she wanted everything. And there's nowhere higher for her to go, she's never failed a surgery, so she needs to now, your brain open to her blade, because nothing will push her like your death to greater heights than either of you could achieve. And she hates you, screaming and crying and asking why do you hate her so much, because the only reason you could leave her is if you HATE her, and you ask her once again, when have you ever hated her? And you beat her, and berate her, and everything you've done is for her, because you are the same, you're the same.
And what if she agrees to do the surgery, your way, with all of your conditions met, and just like her maybe you want to die in the OR as well, and you've done everything in your power to give her an impossible task.
And what if she saves your life?
What then?
It had to have been just like mine.

Hyper Knife is my perfect fanservice show. I always love it when a show makes more emotional sense than logical sense - Deok-hee survives and swerves jail not because it's realistic, but because he needs to be proven wrong lol. It's Se-ok's story, she's the one who always states her terms, she's the one with total clarity and fearlessness about what she wants and how to get it. It's so fun how episode 8 is essentially this massive collusion of all these men going, "yup, yup, Deok-hee has a point yknow", and then Se-ok doing her own thing anyways lol. Like the moment Deok-hee and that pisshead officer made that deal behind her back, it was a wrap. As if Se-ok would take that decision lying down. It's more satisfying punishment for Deok-hee to live, to see Se-ok truly surpass him (on her terms!), and for him to have to actually contend with what he is, without the protection of his reputation, his money, and his personal ideal of himself as the "perfect" teacher to the "perfect" student.
Imo their relationship being platonic made perfect sense for the story's chronology. Deok-hee takes his job as Se-ok's teacher very seriously - to cross that line would be a violation of what she asked of him as her teacher. Much of their conflict is because they're no longer teacher-student (their relationship was already evolving by the time she tried to strangle him) - and Se-ok has already moved past the need for him to teach her, while he clings to it. His demand that she opens up his brain is both fitting and ironic - he rejects her, then demands she enter the most intimate part of him (the brain has a pulse like a heart). He even twists up that demand by turning his surgery into a highly convoluted plot where he dies dramatically in the OR by her hands, his final, parting lesson that perfects his student. If the show had validated him, I would've been so let down. I think that now that Deok-hee has to face her after she entered him, their relationship is going to get a lot more fun - no more barriers between them.
I cant lie, l scoffed when i first saw the trailers for this show - it looked like every other edgy bad-taste makjang. And while there is a lot of that floating around here, its also far more nuanced, far more confident in/committed to its vision than i could've imagined. It's impressive how it takes the vulnerability and internal logic of its "psycho" characters very seriously. Trust Park Eun-bin to sell a concept. Should never have doubted her for a sec. She's flying high here, utterly unmoored from any constraints. Sol Kyung-gyu seems to have a more interesting taste in kdramas than his esteemed actor peers do. I loved the supporting cast as always. Gorgeous direction that grows as the story progresses. And that script! Where did it come from? What inspired it? Why was it written? Please give an interview, writer Kim Sun-hee, I need to know ๐

I know I said I didnโt want to discourse about Hyper Knife until it was over.
BUTโฆ
I love how the show is centered around Seok, and her life during and after her time as a medical student. Focusing on her relationships, friendly and professionally, that sheโs had after her experience with Deokhee.
Seok is a fully developed character. She wasnโt hung up on Deokhee after The Incident, aside from her trauma over what happened. She wasnโt thinking about him every day. It was clear she was caught off guard by his call when he contacted her.
But itโs EXTREMELY obvious that the same could not be said for Deokhee.
We see him as a medical professional. And as a student, just like Seok. We see him with his assistant Ms. Ra, the only real personal relationship from the audienceโs perspective, and itโs very vague.
The only thing we know is that Deokhee has thought about Seok FREQUENTLY since their fallout. And he harbors no negative feelings for her. In fact, itโs obvious that he thinks of her fondly, based on his reserved smiles when reminiscing of her.
Anyways. Itโs obvious that he is the one obsessed and in denial and repressed and unhinged and I think itโs a beautiful way to tell this story.
I love it when two characters are completely and utterly obsessed with each other to an unhealthy degree. Utter devotion to the point of insanity. To the point the lines blur as to what the nature of their relationship even is. Romantic? Platonic? Sexual? Familial? Professional? All and none of the above, somehow. They canโt exist without each other. Being together is making them both worse. They would watch each other sleep in bed at night every night if they could. They are literally always thinking about each other. They would kill and die for each other. They resent each other. Even seperating them isn't going to fix the situation at this point. They permanently live inside each other.
