Emma Watson hasnât been a role model for me since I was probably sixteen, however I will give her credit for this. July 8th, 2014, Emma Watson was appointed as Goodwill Ambassador of UN Women. UN Women is the United Nations organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women.
So when Turkeyâs deputy prime minister, BĂźlent ArÄąnç, sparked controversy Monday when he said women should not laugh out loud in public. Ranting against the countryâs âmoral corruption,â ArÄąnç said that a woman
âshould not laugh loudly in front of all the world and should preserve her decency at all times,â The Guardian reports. âA man should be moral but women should be moral as well, they should know what is decent and what is not decent.â
âA woman should be chaste. She should know the difference between public and private. She should not laugh in public,â said Arinc. âWhere are our girls, who slightly blush, lower their heads and turn their eyes away when we look at their face, becoming the symbol of chastity?â he asked, according to the Hurriyet Daily News.
Arincâs comments were met with widespread ridicule, and Turkish women have taken to Twitter to share photos of themselves engaging in supposed âmoral corruption.â
Almost immediately, women reacted, with thousands taking to Instagram to post pictures of themselves laughing in public under the hashtags #kahkaha (laugh) and #direnkahkaha (resist/laugh). Women of all ages photographed themselves in a variety of public locations, from restaurants to beaches, in a powerful and beautiful repudiation of ArÄąnçâs troubling statement.
Below are 10 of the most striking pictures from the online movement.

Protesting in the name of women!
While I donât agree with everything UN Women stands for or everything Emma Watson does. I will always believe in a laugh. Laugh as much as you can, as loud and long as possible in public. To say a woman canât laugh in public to say their is something un-moral about laughing. About expressing happiness in public, that is wrong.
So everyone whatever they say remember âyou can laugh it off.â
