Main Glacier of the Alps from the Moosfluh viewpoint by Mark PARADOX Via Flickr: No.1 In Explore January 20, 2026 The Moosfluh viewing platform (2,333 m) above Riederalp offers one of the most picturesque and impressive views of the Great Aletsch Glacier. Situated right on the edge of a massive ice bend, it reveals the glacier's deep texture. The 23-kilometer-long "ice river," like a Fozen Serpent, winds through the mountains. In summer, the ice sheds its winter snow cover, revealing a striking blue-gray texture and deep, dark medial moraines (stripes of rocks and debris) that appear as streaks across the ice. Vibrant green alpine meadows, dotted with alpine flowers and wild blueberries, create a sharp contrast to the stark blue-white ice. Looking down to the edge of the glacier, you can see the Aletsch Forest, home to Swiss pine trees over 900 years old. Beyond the glacier, there are wonderful views of the Bernese Oberland peaks (including the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau) and the 4,000-metre peaks of the Valais, such as the Matterhorn and Dom. I had the chance to photograph this glacier from other famous points: Eggishorn and Bettmerhorn, but the most picturesque view opens up from the Moosfluh platform.
