I love how people are like “well okay there used to be child labor, and 14-hour shifts, and strikes were broken up by calling in the army to shoot at the workers, and deadly working conditions leading to easily preventable tragedies like the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, but that doesn’t happen anymore” because it ignores two major things. One is that all those things are still happening in the developing world, two is that the only reason those things have stopped happening or happen less often in the developed world is because of the constant pressure from anarchists, communists, and others in the workers’ movement demanding it. The bosses never had a change of heart and decided “okay, enough is enough, we’ll allow safety regulations and health inspections and stop using child labor”, the bosses kept fighting until the very last minute before those regulations became law. Only after decades of normalizing these regulations did it become unthinkable that we could do it any other way. 

Or: only after decades of moving manufacturing to developing countries with draconian rulers and no labour standards.
