Searching for the Historical Muhammad (S): My thoughts as a believer and a student of history.
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم اللهم صلي على محمدٍ وآل محمد ولعنة الله على عدائهم أجمعين من الأولين والاخرين
'History is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake"- James Joyce (Ulysses) The quote from the lips of the character Stephen in the novel Ulysses have stuck with me for a long time, ever since reading the novel in childhood. Indeed one of the more problematic areas which has been disturbing to my own identity and faith as a believer is the somewhat problematic portrayal of the Prophet Muhammad in the early Sira literature and the early tafseer literature. Allow me to elaborate as this can be slightly confusing. We as Shi'as have our own sources for Sunnah namely the reliably transmitted works of the Shi'a Imamiyyah such as al-Kafi and the three other books which make up the canonical kutub al-arba'a yet we find that in the area of history, our 'Ulema have become dependant upon utilizing works such as the Sirah-Maghazi literature and general historical (Tarikh) works of the Sunni masses. This is primarily due to the works of our pious predecessors of the Imamiyyah being systematically destroyed and avoided by the tyrants and their collaborators who went on to define Islamic Orthodoxy. Why is this problematic? Well let's see: http://www.answering-islam.org/Silas/abu-afak.htm http://www.answering-islam.org/Muhammad/Enemies/asma.html http://wikiislam.net/wiki/The_Story_of_Umm_Qirfa http://beforeitsnews.com/alternative/2014/02/muhammad-and-the-torture-of-kinana-ibn-al-rabi-2898800.html Ok, I know, many of the well intended brothers and sisters may point out that:
1) These are anti-Muslim polemical sites 2) These have been responded to using isnad criticism by Sunni apologists In response, I could only emphasize that such accounts stem from largely early historical works on the Prophet Muhammad (S) which are utilized by our 'Ulema in recounting Sirah accounts, they are depended upon heavily as the myth floats around that the earlier the source, the more reliable it must be. They maybe cited on non-Muslim polemical sites, but they are being utilized from early Muslim biographies. Secondly, the pathetic attempts of the Sunni apologist websites have had to accept some of these accounts (see Abu Afak and the last torture account) and more importantly are refuting them using Sunni 'Ilm al-Rijaal. Hence their refutations hold no water in Shi'a discussions in which we cannot selective pick and choose what we like from their sources like a restaurant menu. What I am proposing is the construction of a Sirah dependent upon newly unconvered Shi'a sources, in addition to a filtering of this filthy BS from our books. I am arguing that a new presentation of the Prophetic Sirah can be achieved through the historically acceptable narrations of the Ahl al-Bayt (A) and that the image of Muhammad (S) found in our works holds superior weight historiographically due to numerous factors. For example, the original Imamiyyah account of the Prophet's Martyrdom is much more historically plausible than the fable of a slow working poison which took years to take effect found within Sunni accounts. The concept of a community obsessed with undermining the Prophet (S) and a community concerned with oppressing his very own family also explains away these disturbing fabrications which demonstrate how the tyrants fabricated this BS in order to justify their sickening foreign and domestic policies with rebels and dissenters. I will gradually be elaborating on more case studies of how this can be demonstrated. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon Fatima and her Father, her Husband and her Children (AS)
I have never met him in this material world even once before, but tonight I miss Imam 'Ali (a) more than I've ever missed anyone in my life

"Biological racism has given way to cultural racism. It is no longer the colour of one’s skin or the shape of one’s nose that are stigmatised, but a certain manner of being."
Frantz Fanon, Les Damnés de la terre (via ubahmadow)
Certainly not true entirely; but in terms of political correct public opinion- spot on.
One of the hardest aspects of the “convert experience"—to the extent you can even generalize it, as it is really very different for everyone—is facing that question. Even if your parents reject you because of your conversion, you probably still love them. In fact, no matter how awful people’s...
It's too depressing to think about..I guess I'm more caught up on the question of whether or not I will be going to hell for now. We all have nothing but the Mercy of Allah and Aal Muhammad (a) are undoubtedly the perfect manifestation of that but I doubt many come to even hear of them (a)
I don’t understand why people get so defensive and angry when someone questions the authenticity of a hadith or requests a reference. There’s a lot of rubbish out there. One must seek the truth.
Its largely due the fact that the question is relative to fluctuating standards, our 'Ulema largely restrict the use of 'ilm alrijal/dirayah to fiqhi hadith (Halal/Haraam) and allow the citation of Akhlaqi narrations irrespective of reliability from the perspective of transmission. A secondary problem is that our 'Ulema differ on Mabani (Principles) of the Sciences of Hadith so (even hypothetically tumblr laiety learnt the sciences) whose could we consider the universal standard?
A) If God did not exist then B) the historical Imam 'Ali (a) would not have existed but he did exist and as a result we can feel confident that God existed.
The Logical Syllogism which led a friend from agnosticism into Tashayyu` (Note he meant in terms of causation and not deification of Imam 'Ali!)

The Search for Spirituality (fleeing from a polemical mindset)
In his name (Exalted he is);
I can remember the awe-inspiring feeling of my first Ramadhan; then the amazing feeling of most ramadhans after that. Particularly insightful for me was the amazing feeling of connecting to Allah (swt) through a living relationship with the Qur’an & the du’as of the Ahl al-Bayt (a). I guess there was an amazing winning streak that I achieved through following that course of action annually.
Sadly that changed in 2009; after being relentlessly driven into defending my beliefs constantly- I finally was consumed and vowed never to let my friends of the Sunni persuasion rest, frustrated largely at the fact that I couldn’t meet any of them without being subjugated to some verbal harassment from people in my social circle. I was accused of all sorts of beliefs which i knew my creed was free of, at the time without realising it, I let my anger consume me and the seeds of a fulltime Sectarian Shi’a polemicist were finally sowed in my now hardening heart.
Ultimately driven with a somewhat noble goal; I had allowed myself to deteriorate into the full time Rafidhi (I use this term in a double edged sarcastic manner) Refutation spouting and attack centric individual spending my Ramadhan nights going through Paltalk debate rooms and giving speeches to others on how to smash the ‘Other’ ‘Cult Reading’ of Islam…
Fastforward to 2012..gone were the Ramadhan nights of supplication and meaning and only after seeing how hatred consuming my heart was turning not only me into a cold fiend capable of ex-communicating and verbally attacking pretty much everyone in my own Sect let alone others; I realised I was in danger of raising the same seeds of hatred and void of spiritual light in the hearts of my two children too (still toddlers).
I miss out many details which are crucial here and have deliberately avoided coming across as a liberal, I’m certainly conservative and Shi’a to the bone… I’m just struggling to get back to being in the warm embrace of spirituality and remove the dark plague of polemical fire which burnt all spirituality and tranquility from my heart even a year after awakening from my deluded state (6 months after wrestling it away for good).
I pray that Allah (swt) gives me the ability to build the relationship to the Qur’an back up for with all the darkness of Fitna, the light of the Qur’an is facing some serious resistance.
