Australian place names are just not made for blues songwriting. American place names sound great for the blues. You sing a song about how you’re headin’ down to Jackson, and you sound cool. If you make the midnight train to Cali’, you’re heading straight for the blues. “I’m gonna take the midnight train to Sandgate” doesn’t sound too great, nor does “headin’ down to Wollongong”. There are one or two. Headin’ up to Rocky doesn’t sound to bad, and takin’ a soul searching journey to Byron is sort of lyrically nice… but as a whole, Memphis and Texas sound better in a song than Bendigo and Yeppoon.
