Miley nearly opened her mouth in protest at his scoff once Hannah’s song came on, but stopped herself and placed her best smile on her face. It still hadn’t become any less strange hearing her music out in public, but the worst part was seeing peoples’ reactions. “What, you don’t like Hannah Montana?” she asked, curious what he was going to say about her alter ego. “This is one of my favorite songs of hers,” she admitted, mentally going over the dance moves from her tour as she listened.

     He had always been the kind of guy who intentionally went against the grain when it came to consuming media, straying away from what was trending in favor of letting his own tastes decide what he spent his time on. By now his best friends had gotten used to his weird quirks, but other people still tended to be surprised by his seemingly arbitrary stance against popular culture. “It’s not that I hate her stuff,” he started, trying to be diplomatic as Miley was evidently a fan. “She’s a talented singer. It’s just...there’s nothing really original about her sound. I mean, most music is derivative these days anyway, but especially pop. And the lyrics, too. What’s it trying to say? Nobody’s perfect? Yeah, we all learned that by the time we hit first grade.”

Lizzie couldn’t help but appreciate this moment, the way the two went from fits of giggles and laughter to a softer, sincere moment, with no weirdness in between. She truly could sit close to Gordo like this all night and be at peace. They never stayed serious for long, though, as they continued to prove so. She made a face as he talked about her type, her full attention on him now. “Who said you have bad hair?” She asked, bringing a hand up to run her fingers through his hair with a smile. “Yeah, well,” she shrugged, “it never really worked out for me with any of those guys, did it?” As she said this, she thought about all the dates she’d gone on, the many different flings she’d had, that only ended with her unsure of what went wrong. All along, she thought that something was wrong with her, but she obviously was just looking for the wrong guys in the first place.

“It’s okay, maybe I was a little jealous when you kept asking about Sharpay..” She trailed off, giving him a sheepish smile. His confirmation that she didn’t have to compete with anyone, though, was all the reassurance she needed. Her fingers still tangled in his hair, she brought her lips to his again.

     With Lizzie running her fingers through his hair, his gaze flickered to her lips. He was almost too distracted for the next moment to listen to what she was saying, but when he heard her admit to her own jealousy, he couldn’t help a small, smug smile from springing up—and he wisely elected not to let her know that he was pretty sure from their one conversation that Sharpay already had a boyfriend anyway. Details, details.

Lizzie should have known that Gordo would begin to tease her, but what he had said next only made her eyes widen even more. “Gordo!” She practically yelled, grin still present as she grabbed one of the pillows from the couch to hit him with. Not too hard, but hard enough to show him she meant serious business. Gordo always loved to mess with her, but this was definitely on another level than usual. She didn’t hate it, but still had to get back at him in return somehow.

After she playfully whacked him with the pillow, she let it rest in her lap, waiting for what was to come next. She practically melted at his words, the way he was so gentle and kind as he said them. “I know,” she answered, never thinking for a second that Gordo would leave her side. Through thick and thin, through even the awkward stages of trying to date each other in the past, Gordo was still there for her. He always was, and she didn’t doubt that he always would be.

“For real this time?” She repeated, lifting up her head to meet his gaze. She believed that to be true, even if she had a small hint of hesitation deep down. It was nothing against Gordo, of course, but more her own insecurities making her hesitate. She giggled, rolling her eyes. “Oh, now we’re talking about my type?” She asked, smile never faltering. “But … yes. I do. If that’s what you want, of course,” she said, adding teasingly, “I don’t have to compete against this vampire for you, do I?”

     He accepted the pillow abuse with a laugh, knowing he deserved as much and expecting about that level of retaliation for his inappropriate teasing. He had no regrets about it. The look on her face was priceless. When she relaxed with the pillow on her lap, he leaned into her until she picked her head back up to look at him again. Gordo could see in her eyes when he told her how he felt that she believed him—for the most part. There was the tiniest glimmer of doubt, and he thought he knew where it was coming from.

     “Well, yeah. Obviously you know my type,” he replied as she picked up on his type comment. There was still a tone of humor in his voice to ensure that she knew he wasn’t trying to be too serious even as he brought up his own insecurities. “Based on the guys you’ve liked in the past, I’m pretty sure you’re into tall guys with good hair. Not that I was ever jealous or anything...”

One eyebrow raised quizzically, she watched Gordo playfully pretend he had some sort of secret to admit to her. She knew he was obviously messing with her, rolling her eyes with a smile as he gently pushed her arm in return. Although she was nervous to ask about what was next for them, the way they were both so comfortable around each other during this conversation was reassuring enough in itself.

She didn’t think he’d take offense to the way she’d described their mini make-out session, eyes widening slightly and her smile only growing. “No! That’s literally not what I meant!” She was quick to defend herself, a laugh escaping her lips. “Professional? I .. I didn’t know there was a difference. Should I be nervous?” She asked, cheeks turning a light shade of pink and still giggling at how silly it all was. As their fits of laughter died down, though, the conversation went back to being a little more serious, and Gordo’s words made her heart flutter in her chest. Despite that they’d tried to date before, the moments leading up to that time felt a lot different than this. In fact, that honestly felt like a lifetime ago. Lizzie and Gordo had both learned a lot about themselves and each other since then, and the time between then and now might’ve been exactly what they needed to finally lead up to this.

Hearing it was years of pent up feelings was a little shocking, but should have been pretty obvious. In a way, it had been the same for her, but Gordo seemed to be more aware of his feelings than Lizzie had. Hearing him express his love, it was magical, even more magical than the literal vampire he’d been bitten by recently. Though they’d always told each other how much they all loved each other, Miranda included, this was a different confession of love — it was no longer only platonic, like it had always been. “Gordo..” Lizzie trailed off, leaning close to rest her head on his shoulder and wrap her arms around him in a side-hug. She was careful not to lean too close to the injury on his neck, but she did give his waist a squeeze to show how much his words meant to her. “You know I love you, too. I know we always say that, but .. This time I mean it even more. You’re so special to me, and I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

The dusting of blush on Lizzie’s cheeks when she responded to his comment about making-out didn’t escape his notice, and he couldn’t resist the urge to encourage it further by quipping, “Just wait til you see me naked.” He was joking, of course; it was just crazy to think that he could actually have an effect on her like that…He was definitely taking advantage of it, but just for the moment, because soon enough the silly banter they were having quieted into a serious scene. Resting her head on him and holding him close while still taking care around the sore spot on his neck, she responded to his confession in kind—not only saying that she loved him but that she didn’t know what she’d do without him.

“Well, you’ll never have to worry about that,” he assured her. It was a fact of their relationship from the time they were young, that would never change: “I’m not going anywhere.” He rested his head atop hers, memories of the times she’d fallen asleep with her head on his shoulder just like this flashing through his mind, and he took a deep breath before finally going for the last confirmation they needed to make this official. He wanted nothing more than to be with her and by this point he was ninety-nine percent certain that she wanted the same thing, but he had to leave a tiny space for doubt until she said it herself.

     Rolling his eyes at her assertion that his bleeding would have already been taken care of had he not walked away, Gordo couldn’t help smiling all the same. Her pouting was cute, and there was no point in debating whose fault any of this was. As long as she stopped the blood leaking out of his neck as she promised, he would consider them square. When she approached again for a second bite, this time with an addendum to her warning, he quietly muttered a reply, “Ah, but the sucking was the good part.” He closed his eyes and clenched his jaw, preparing for the moment her fangs sunk back into him, but this time the brief pain was followed by quick relief. Gordo didn’t know how any of this worked, and he was close to asking all about it, ready to get out his camera and film his own Interview with the Vampire.

     He thanked her as she finished the work of cleaning him up with a sterile pad, opening his mouth again to begin his interrogation, but Mavis managed to distract him from his own curiosity—a hefty feat on any other occasion, but one easily achievable with the simple word choice she unexpectedly smacked him with. Mate?! He almost choked on air as he scrambled for a response, hit with another wave of surprise as she casually added that she would have said yes anyway, if he had just been blunt about his intentions from the start. In all fairness, the misunderstanding could have just as easily been avoided if she hadn’t danced around the topic of wanting to drink his blood with vague words as well. They were both to blame for this; but right now, with his bite mark numbed and no longer bothering him, there were other things vying for his attention. The fact that Mavis actually was actually down being top of that list.

     “Really?” His eyebrows drew together as he tried to gauge whether she actually knew what she was accepting now. The bizarrely scientific choice of the word mate would make it seem as if she had taken an animal biology course before, but it felt so detached from the human experience, he wondered if she had ever actually done it—if vampires were just weird in the terms they chose to use, or if she was speaking like an outsider observing an animal species’ sexual behavior. Gordo didn’t know how he felt about that, but one thing was clear: an attractive woman just admitted that she would have been willing to fool around if he said the word, and he felt a pleased rush. Maybe he was just an animal after all...

It was obvious Lizzie didn’t know whether she wanted to hear more details or not — on one hand, this was the first magic experience anyone she knew had come across, so it was natural to be curious! On the other hand … It was a little weird to be talking about a date he had after what just happened between them. Gordo seemed to catch Lizzie’s hesitation, though, despite that she had asked. He never failed to reassure her, to make her feel okay no matter how many crazy thoughts were running through her head.

“Really?” Lizzie replied, eyes widening in curiosity as she mentally wondered if she’d ever met someone with magic before. “You’re not hiding something like that from me, are you?” She asked teasingly, smile returning as she lightly pushed his arm playfully. It was so easy to fall back into their playful banter, as if nothing weird or crazy had happened between them. It made her realize that all this time, she should have never worried about their friendship falling apart due to their romantic feelings toward each other. She wanted them to stay best friends, but now she realized they didn’t have to only be best friends. There was nothing wrong with making this something more, if that was something they both wanted.

She wasn’t exactly sure what Gordo wanted, but as he grabbed her hand and brought back up what he said earlier, relief washed over her. She really had nothing to fear anymore. “I know,” Lizzie answered with a smile, leaning over and kissing his cheek. “But … What does this mean now?” She asked, still holding his hand as she met his gaze again. “For us, I mean. Like, I know you’re my best friend, but … I’m pretty sure best friends don’t just casually make-out, you know?”

     He played along with her teasing as she questioned the possibility that he could be hiding some sort of magic from her, despite the fact that she had known him their whole lives. “Actually...” he deadpanned, before breaking into a grin and returning her gentle shove. “No. Of course not.” There was only one thing he had been able to keep from her—besides the plot of his screenplay—and now that was out in the open. So...now what?

     They seemed to be on the same page, Lizzie bringing up the topic of ‘us,’ and he liked the sound of that word when she used it to refer to them as a pair...as a couple...? If this was finally the moment for them to define their relationship and take it beyond the boundaries of friendship into something more, he was ready to seize that opportunity—it felt right. He hoped she felt the same way...But before that, he had a gripe with her choice of the next words she’d spoken to pick apart.

      It was ironic that Mavis was freaking out about this more than Gordo himself was, but he guessed it sort of made sense in a roundabout way. While he had been the one who’d just taken a little physical damage, there was much more at stake for her with him finding out what she was...no pun intended. He was surprised by the existence of vampires to be sure, but there was really no reason to freak out about this one in particular; if she were the kind who wanted to suck him dry, she already had more than enough time to do so, and it wasn’t like she had attacked him or used any forced. She hadn’t even bitten him without—as far as she knew—getting his consent first. How was she supposed to know that he had been thinking of something entirely different when he agreed to it...? Okay...she was still an adult woman and it was pretty strange that she didn’t seem to have any idea what was on his mind, when she talked about wanting to taste him. Now that he knew that had never been on her agenda, it would be somewhat embarrassing for him to admit.

     It was all just a big miscommunication, and he could tell Mavis was a kind person who hadn’t meant him any harm; he took this incident as more of a very peculiar accident than anything else, so even if he’d ended up a little hurt, he didn’t really blame her. Plus, he couldn’t deny how cool it was to be in the presence of an actual magical being. It hardly felt real—so he couldn’t be blamed for not acting with the proper level of concern right now. As she offered to make the bleeding stop, he paused in his attempt to take care of his own wound, waving her over though it seemed like she half wanted to bolt. “That sounds fair. You started the bleeding; you should stop it,” he replied, teasing her a bit to ease the tension. “I’m joking. It’s really fine—I mean, this sort of thing could happen to anyone.” Maybe not anyone, but that was neither here nor there.

Lizzie smiled as Gordo reassured her he was fine, finding it amusing that he was excited for the cool scar that would remain there eventually. It was still a little unsettling, though, imagining a vampire biting Gordo’s neck like that. Was it bad that she kinda wanted to know more? It was probably dumb to ask, but she couldn’t help but be curious.

“So .. How did it even happen?” She finally asked after a moment of silence. “I don’t need like, the gory details or anything, but,” she shrugged her shoulders. “There’s gotta be more to the story, right?”

Although, maybe she didn’t want to know the whole story. After all, if it had been a blind date, and they obviously ended up mouth to neck … It must have gone a little bit similar to what was just happened with the two of them. She couldn’t be jealous, though, considering all the random dates she’s also been on …. Perhaps the gory details weren’t the only thing she didn’t want. “I-I mean, you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to, but .. You literally met a vampire, like that’s just crazy to imagine!”

     He was just about to crack and fess up, unable to keep anything from Lizzie when she asked him so directly, but then she seemed to hesitate and offer him an out so he didn’t have to tell her how his date had ended up with her mouth on his throat. Maybe because she already knew—it wasn’t exactly hard to guess—and maybe she didn’t actually want to hear it. In that case, he would gladly avoid the subject.

     He had to put himself in her shoes and imagine how he’d feel if their positions were reversed—if he just found out that she’d had an intimate encounter with another guy not long ago. Even if it was before she knew how he felt about her, there would be an inevitable twinge of jealousy, just thinking about Lizzie with someone else. It had never been a walk in the park before, seeing her date other people. For starters, he’d want to show her that he had just as much to offer her as any other man, if not more...Rather than an explanation of how this whole vampire bite thing started, perhaps he should be offering her reassurance.

Sharpay matched Gordo’s slight lean into the center of the table as she listened closely to the plot of his movie. Two roles in one film? It sounded like a big task for a novice movie actor to be taking on, but she wasn’t one to back down from a challenge, ever. If anything, it was the perfect opportunity for Sharpay to showcase her range and readiness to move into a different medium of acting.

Nodding her head slowly as he finished, Sharpay opened her mouth to ask questions, and then closed it, finding that she didn’t know where exactly to start. “Romance?” was the first word out of her mouth, and she curled her lips into a smile. “Have you found your male lead yet? Not that I’m trying to be pushy, but there’s a guy I know that I’ve acted with before, he’s … a good friend of mine. We have really great chemistry. His name is Troy, Troy Bolton?”

     He raised an eyebrow as she focused on one aspect of the plot he’d described in particular, but it quickly became evident why she was so interested in the idea of the film including a romance. The way she brought up this ‘good friend’ of hers, even hesitating before choosing those words, made it clear that there were some feelings there—maybe they were even dating but she knew it wouldn’t look good to outright ask for a part in his movie for her boyfriend. Gordo pressed his lips together, considering. On one hand, the idea of casting an actual couple was tempting; if the on-screen chemistry was really there as Sharpay advertised, it would be a good thing. But then again, counting on the relationship of a pair of young actors—knowing how well those always worked out—was probably a recipe for on-set drama and a walk-out midway through filming if they ended up breaking up.

     “I haven’t cast anyone—well, aside from you, now.” He still didn’t believe his luck in his leading lady just walking right up to him; he might just have to give this Troy a chance, if the universe was planning on continuing to drop things in his lap like this. “All right, so Troy Bolton. Does he have a demo reel I could look at?”
