So, this time, I’m not going to use a paragraph patronisingly complaining about what I’m giving advice on that I have seen in other fiction, and I’m just going to jump to advice. I’ve used these methods with a pair of characters in A Thief’s War, but of course I’m not going to mention which two. Enjoy!

Use Them Sparingly:

You don’t have to do this with all of your mysterious characters, of course, but I find a great way to keep a character mysterious is to make them only show up from time to time. Only make them present when their presence is vital.

Write From the Other Characters’ Points of View:

Again, you don’t have to do this, but it’s really hard to keep a character mysterious if you’re writing from their point of view. Let the characters around them wonder about their motivations, their appearance, their talents, and so forth.

Don’t Give Too Much Information Too Quickly:

This should be obvious, but it’s easier said than done. The first time your characters encounter Mr. Edgy Mystery, only give a few details. The sweep of cloak, the shadow of the hood, and maybe a whisper of the character’s name. The rule of “show don’t tell” is even more essential with this. Convey the character’s attitude and behaviour through actions, or hints in their speech.

Please Don’t Make Their Voice Raspy:

Please don’t make their voice raspy.

After Their First, Second, or Third Appearance:

I advise making them absent for a decent period of time after one of their first few appearances. Make the readers wonder where they went, what their doing, or maybe if they’re even still alive.

Make the Character’s Answers to Question Evasive:

When the protagonist asks why the character does what they do, have the character smirk or frown at them. Don’t have the character go into a deep monologue, or explain their tragic past.

Explain Them Through Other Characters:

My last bit of advice, here, is the show the mysterious character through the other characters. Have them meet a childhood friend that mentions a few things that happened to them, or have the protagonist slowly fit pieces of the puzzle that is this character together.

I’m glad that he’s okay and smiling. The Tomlinson’s are a strong bunch.

I wanna be careful and respect about this because I’ve see a lot of l@rries making post about how Harry is making Louis happy and using this tragedy to spur a ship. I don’t want to do that here, so I’m treading lightly.

Relationships in general are by choice. Humans don’t need lovers to survive. We were made to be social/have friends, and we have a strong desire to have an intimate partner. But at the end of the day, we don’t need a partner to live. We choose to be with the in our lives, we work on those relationships constantly to grow and get better. We have to tell ourselves to make an effort, unlike our bodily functions that do things on their own to make us alive.

And (more mini rant here) THIS is why so many marriages fail! People get hyped on lovey dovey feelings in the beginning and they think that their going to have this perfect marriage where nothing every goes array. But again, people have to work on these relationships daily, but most become lazy and don’t show the effort to their partners. And then when shit hits the fan (deaths, illness, losing jobs, financial stress-etc) and suddenly that fairy tale wedding is just a distant memory, people can’t handle it break up.

Relationships aren’t like dates on the Bachelor where you gallivant all over the world and make out on beaches. It’s raw to bare your soul to someone, to carry their pain when they’re hurting or worried or stressed. You can’t take a relationship lightly, it’s serious shit and it needs to be seen that way. Love has it’s limits, because human’s patience and tolerance have their limits. But being in a relationship is acknowledging the barriers and what hinders your relationship and doing everything you can to overcome them because what you feel for your partner is worth everything you can physically and emotionally do to keep that person in your life.

And I think Louis and Eleanor get that.

I think that they balance each other well and it’s clear to see that both care and support each other. They’ve been together for a long time, they’ve known each other since they were teenagers and now they’re making their way to 30, ahh! Time flies lol.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, the first time they broke up in 2015 after 3 years together was necessary. It was clear Louis was stressed for touring 10 months of the year consistently and the pressures of being in the band. And I think that was clearly evident on Eleanor to a certain degree. It did get in their relationship, and I don’t think they were prepared for that (i don’t think you can ever fully be prepared for the 1D/Larry hysteria). I think that they both went into this relationship with as most young couples do-just wanting something fun and easy. But they grew older and things got harder and they couldn’t handle it, at least that’s what I think happened.

But they needed that time apart. Eleanor really grew into her own in that time.I remember saying, “we’re finally seeing the girl Louis fell for.” They both needed to learn whatever it was life needed to show them and learn from that what they needed to. In that time, a clear sense of respect and I think even love from Jay and Louis’ sisters to Eleanor was still there and for me it showed just how much El meant to Louis for a long time and perhaps still did during their seperation. Eleanor never bad mouthed Louis to the press (@larries who have been saying this for years, please show me fucking proof she ever did, thank you) which she easily could have and made some bank on it. But she never did because she still respected and cared for him.

Again, my opinion here, but Jay getting sick seems to brought them back together. They were now older, wiser-but that attraction and connection was still there. But it just seems to have grown in spite of everything. They experienced how hardships separated them the first time and I think they learned how to lean on each other and to be each other’s support system. I think they know what to be for each other, in the good times and the bad.

Today was just so lovely to see, not as an Elounor stan. The fact that the whole Tomlinson family were able to have fun today and celebrate despite their obvious pain is just lovely. They should be smiling, Daisy and Phoebe should have a joyous birthday because it’s how it should be. But their pain is still there, today there was pain with the smiles. That will be there for the rest of their lives, the missing pieces that Jay and Fizzy fulfilled for them will never fully be found in their lives ever again. It’ll just get easier for exist without them as time goes on. And I think Eleanor was hurting too, perhaps not as much as the Tomlinson siblings. But she knew Fizzy for half of Fizzy’s life and she’s grieving too. I can totally see her being the one to step in times of pain like this to try and cheer everyone up and that was confirmed for me today. And I think Louis is there for Eleanor as well in this time.

It’s so evident to me that both Louis and Eleanor have a great amount of respect and understanding of each other. They seem to have a strong foundation, and Louis calling Eleanor his rock just confirms that. Yeah they love each other, but there’s more to their relationship then just that. They support each other every day, in good times in bad. It’s coming out the other side of grief stronger then before, and they have done that with so much in their relationship.

This is love folks. It’s not 2 sec gifs of longing staring off at each other. It’s being there for each other no matter what. It’s respecting and supporting each other. It’s cheering on for your partner amidst pain and grief. It’s understanding your partner’s limits, and yet pushing them when you know they can do better. It’s seeing each other at your absolute worst and still can’t imagine a day without them. And I think that’s what Eleanor and Louis have. :)
