might as well finish this
I think I'm ready to call this done, mid-October seemed like a good deadline for a Halloween comic.
Specifically, this one is focused on the 1800's crew, so a brief summary for those unfamiliar:
contents includes alcohol, violence, body horror and death, and some implied child neglect I suppose. Mostly within the bounds of what's typical for TF2... mostly.
I would like to thank everyone who gave me feedback, schnozzbun-art for help editing, Nominel for his astute observations and Max, for his insights on composition
I feel it would also be amiss not to mention themannfamily who's writings have been a huge source of inspiration, I don't think I would conceive of Silas the way I do if not for them
so without further ado...
After reading this comic, I was dead. There was no doubt about it. My heart couldn't stand the emotional shock.
It's hard to describe how happy I am to see such a work about this family, so I'll start one by one.
I suppose it's the constant feeling of irrelevance that makes Silas so realistic and close to me. His position in the family is really humiliating, and this is despite how sincerely he cares about them.
Quiet hatred is something that is peculiar in this family only to Silas and Gray, but only Silas keeps it in himself all his life. This whole family is somehow prone to mental problems (and psychopathy), but I like the way this is manifested in Silas. Truly, still waters run deep. I admire the contempt with which he looks at Barnabus before finally saying what he thinks. He is broken, upset, angry, drunk and of course he can fight. Their interaction has a stunningly strong dynamic.
How frivolously the Hales perceive the rivalry correlates very strongly with how much all the Manns take it to heart.
Silas does not intend to measure superiority, he is ready to kill or be killed. And he is definitely afraid of these thoughts, but his hand will not waver if he decides. This is very obvious from the one whose life he eventually took away. Despite the confrontations with other people, perhaps his own existence brings him much more suffering. As a result, imagine how Barnabus felt when, shortly after this incident, Silas. . . fulfilled his request himself.
Silas is a weak-willed compared to his brother and is certainly involved in the fact that he did not affect the enmity of the nephews in any way, but his fault in this story is the most insignificant. He really loved his boys and continued to love them in death. Therefore, it seems so unfair the attitude that he gets in the end. Against the background of his madness (which is understandable), they do not remember (or no longer want to remember) all the moments of their uncle's participation and it breaks my heart.
Amazing attention to detail, from the plot to the color palette, the play of light and fonts, all this gives an indescribable atmosphere. It was a very valuable experience.
P. S.
Thank you for mentioning, it is a great joy for me to know that my ideas, inspirations and love for this family have been passed on to you.
you are very very welcome, and I'm overjoyed I could put something forward worthy of such in-depth analysis - especially with all the baggage between the two families, the direness with which Silas struggles to hold on and prove himself valuable vs. the laughable ease with which Barnabus inserts himself... I'm very happy I managed to convey that, haha
there's something I can't help but love in the thought that the Mann family, while mutating itself into a self-perpetuating war machine over time, still consists of these terribly fragile, terribly human pieces. Still capable of moments of love and tenderness. Which makes the inevitable all the more horrifying.
