Does Tears of the Kingdom break Zelda lore, or bring it all together?
Since Breath of the Wild, Zelda fans have struggled to find a place for it in the timeline. And while playing Tears of the Kingdom, at first the new backstory for Hyrule threw me for a loop bc it contradicted everything that we thought we knew, with Rauru and Sonia being the founders and first king and queen of Hyrule. But with various clues and hints between both games, i feel Tears of the Kingdom actually confirms not only how far along in the timeline the games are, but also which timeline. Let me explain. Please read the entire theory before commenting if you'd like.
Timeline Placement
To begin with, i believe now more then ever, that BotW and TotK take place in the child timeline. I will now provide evidence before i get into the history and lore for the new games. For this post i will be using evidence taken from the english version of the game.
We hear Skyward Sword, Ocarina of Time, and Twilight Princess get referenced in a memory cutscene, which in my opinon is a firm placement. But how do all the other things like the salt from a great flood and Koroks fit in, as well as enemies and many references to the fallne hero timeline? Simple.
We can eliminate the fallen hero timeline, as this is simply an alternate universe in which Link fails. Every reference to this timeline, such as Lynels and locations, are not exclusive to that timeline. Just because we only see and hear about these things in this alt universe, doesnt mean they dont exist in the other timelines. Whats sort of what an alt universe is after all. We can also rule out the Adult timeline as well, as Hyrule is destroyed in that timeline, and the only thing really linking it there is the sea salt and Koroks. And i have an explanation for that as well.
Contradicting Lore?
Now we need to address why TotK has lore that seems to contradict Skyward Swords explanation of the founding of Hyrule, and the inclusion of the Zonai. The reason is very simple. These games take place so insanely far into the future, that the Hyrule we know from the established timeline has been long gone, destroyed by a great disaster, and this version of Hyrule is brand new, with a new founder and new history. I know that may sound crazy, and my explanation may seem all over the place. But if youve made it this far, then please continue on to what i believe is the new history of Hyrule.
New History
Here is the timeline as i see it with the inclusion of BotW and TotK.
The events of Skyward Sword take place and Link and Zelda found Hyrule and establish the kingdom.
The time know as the Era of Myth takes place, which includes all games from SS all the way through to the end of the Child Timeline, and this marks the end of the Era of Myth in this timeline.
After the events of the final game, an unknown period of time passes, and events and important things that happen in the alt universe of the fallen hero timeline can take place, since the things that exist in that universe can also exist in the other timelines, explaining the presence of fallen timeline enemies.
At some point, the building that would later be known as the Forgotten Temple is built, and stories of all the heroes and crazy events are stored in this building, as stated in Creating a Champion.
A Great flood occurs, destorying the Hyrule we know from all previously exisiting games. This explains the presence of Koroks, Sea Salt being scattered through the land, and Leviathan bones being in strange places like the mountains and being inland (I know some of them resemble deities that can fly but the ID of these has never been confirmed so they could just be large sea creatures.)
Before the flood wiped out all life, a few Hylians and Races escaped to the high mountains just like in Wind Waker.
The waters recede and Hyrule as been completely changed geologically, and the Forgotten Temple is buried under the earth.
Hylians descend the mountains and repopulate Hyrule.
The race known as the Zonai descend from the skys and are seen as god like beings (as stated in TotK). They bless the land with their architecture, culture and technology and live in harmony with Hylians.
The Zonai start to mine and dig for resources and to learn about Hyryles past that has been burried beneath the sea and earth for what could be centuries, explaining all the zonai architecture in the Depths.
After unknown time, relations turn sour, and a war breaks out between the Zonai and Hylians, explained by the amount of spirits, corpses, and poes in the Depths surrounding Zonai buildings.
The war possibly was caused by many Zonai who had a god complex and tried to subjugate Hylians, as they had been revered as gods for so long they believed it.
Rauru steps in and helps the Hylians defeat his own kind (Ganondorf says there use to be many Zonai, and Rauru looks uncomfortable during that comment, perhaps because he is the reason only a few survive, those who sided with him and the Hylians).
To end the conflict and bring peace, Rauru, and Zonai, marries a Hylian woman, and the two became the first official King and Queen of this knew Hyrule, to embrace ancient Hylian customs and appease the Hylian victors. (This is something that happens in real life all the time).
From here, things occue as we see them in the game. Zelda appears from the future, and Rauru has no idea who she or Link or the Master sword are, so the Forgotten Temple hasnt been unearthed yet.
This version of Ganondorf falsely swears loyalty to Rauru after attempting to strike at the end of this brutal war when the Zonai are weakest, but is still defeated and falsey swears loyalty to Rauru.
Ganondorf takes the Secret Stone and murders Sonia, and this version of the Imprisoning War takes place.
Rauru gives his life to seal Ganondorf, and the war ends.
Unknown time passes and the Kingdom of Hyrule flourishes. The Sheikah take inspiration from the Zonai tech and base their own off of it, explaining the similarities.
The Forgotten Temple is unearthed, allowing modern Hylians to know the stories from the Era of Myth and learn that the Ganondorf they defeated is not the first one, and the cycle will repeat. It also gives them knowledge of the Master Sword and what it does and the history of their land.
The Sheikah use their tech to build divine beats, and base their design off of the masks worn by the warriors who helped Rauru in the Imprisoning War.
Calamity Ganon appears, and the Sheikah use the divine beasts and their guardians to assist the princess of this time and the hero to defeat Ganon.
The hero in the prophecy is one of the last remaning Zonai lines, (As the hero from 10,000 years ago is the Zonai link transforms into with his "Ancient Heroes Aspect" armor set).
Calamity Ganon is sealed and 10,000 years of peace ensues. We then go into the events of BotW and TotK as we see them play out.
Conclusion
If you've made it this far, thank you. I know this might seem like a made a few jumps in logic, but i can see much of this being plausiable, even if its not provable. I hope referencing the games to explain why i chose this series of events helps. Even still, there are gaps and things i cannot explain. particularly how the time paradox of Zelda being there to shape history back then, but also the Master Sword traveling through time with Zelda as a dragon but still also being there for the events of BotW.
This was just one nerds attempt to make sense of the confusing lore, and while there may be flaws, i hope you at least enjoyed the read. Please let me know what you agree with or disagree with, and if you have a better explanation, please let me know. Id love to hear it :)

Fun theory time:
BotW 2 is taking a lot of concepts from “Creating a Champion” (orMaster Works), and here’s something I noticed.
- On this page where we see Link using a robotic arm as a replacement for items, we also see a Link with a broken Master Sword.
- I believe that when Ganon’s malice corrupts Links arm in this scene:
is going to somehow break the master sword. And the only ones who know how to repair it are either an ancient race of people or spirits who live in the sky islands above Hyrule, and the main quest for the game will be to repair the Master Sword and defeat dungeons above the clouds.
-Either that, or we have to go back in time to when the sky islands were still around and ask someone from the last for help in fixing it bc no one in the present day knows how.
-Additionally, I think we will see an older “teenage” Purah, as seen here from Creating a Champion.
That is all thank you :)
Link - (The clothing depicted are of his starting villager clothes) Link is a young man who grew up in New Kakariko on Sheikah Island. With his father being Hylian and mother being Sheikah, he inherits the best of both, able to use Sheikah magic and weaponry, as well as learn combat from a former Hylian knight. Although competent and skilled with the sword, Link is a lazy young man and is content with spending time with his friends and family on the island, never bothering to care what lies on the other side of the ocean, on the Hyrule mainland. He gets a rude awakening when evil befalls his peaceful island, and the mark of the triforce manifests itself within him, forcing him to leave his island to search for a way to destroy the evil and learn about the power thrust upon him.
Impa - (The clothing depicted is her main traveling clothes, worn when you first meet her) Impa is the same age as Link, but instead of Sheikah Island, Impa was born and raised in Old Kakariko, on the mainland. Growing up in a warrior culture based around combat, she is a excellent fighter, using any manner of weapons at her disposal. Mainland Sheikah value tradition and prefer to hide in the shadows, covering their faces from birth, and bring shame on those who remove their face covers. Impa is daughter of the village chief, but this did not help her when her mask was removed by an enemy during combat. Following with their traditions, Impa was banished from her tribe to find her own way, without their help. She since hops from tavern to tavern, becoming well traveled and acquainted with the common folk throughout the kingdom. She is now a mercenery, selling her skills to the highest bidder.
Zelda - Zelda is a bright young woman from the Royal Family. Being second in line to the throne, behind her brother, Zelda never had to worry about the responsibilities of leadership. Instead, she spends her time researching ancient ruins and the various plant and animal life around Hyrule. Often found wandering the wilds on her own, her obsession with her work has blinded her to the poor state of her kingdom and its residents. Too far detached from things to see the unusual corruption of her older brother, she is barely seen or heard from by anyone. Quirky and a bit eccentric, Zelda has no verbal filter, and will ask or say anything that comes to mind, regardless of how awkward it makes others feel. Despite this, she is still incredibly smart and knowledgeable about the things she researches. When the triforce manifests within her, she initially sees an opportunity to study, not realizing its bigger implications, and the kinds of danger it will lead her towards.

I’ve been working on an alternate Zelda game concept and I decided to post the character concept art for three characters. Link, Impa, and Zelda. These characters are based on a previous idea I had and posted previously. I wanted to explore the concept is changing how we look at these characters. Link has a new origin as well as look. I don't think we've ever seen a Link with black hair. Impa was fun to make, as we've never really seen a younger Impa, who has a lot to learn and maturing to do. Zelda is usually the one with the plan, and I think it would be interesting to see a more care free Zelda, since she has no leadership responsibilities. It gives her and Impa room to grow into the characters we know them as today.
I also wanted to explore how switchable companions could work in a Zelda game, similar to FF7 remake. Impa would be the one you chose for combat scenarios when you're going into a dungeon ro fighting large groups of enemies. If you were exploring the lore of Hyrule, and searching through ancient ruins, Zelda is your team mate. Each have combat abilities, but Impa leans more towards that side of things, while Zelda uses her magic for healing and defense.
The initial concept for this idea had much different characters, and was inspired by Aaron Diaz and his concept of Clockwork Empire. This is just the start of this new idea. Please take a look at my initial illustrations and idea for this game here and here

Echoes of the Past
So recently I’ve been working on an idea for a new Zelda game inspired by several artists and fanfics on Zelda Amino and Aaron Diaz’s “Clockwork Empire” Concept (Link to his work will be below. Check him out, his art is AMAZING!). Heavy inspiration comes from Breath of the Wild, and what I would want to see improved or implemented to improve that game personally. I wanted to share my own ideas and art for a game I have a somewhat vague idea for.
Please note that these are just rough designs and various ideas. I’m not a game developer or creator. I’m just a self taught artist having some fun, so I hope you like it.
Story
The story essentially is that the regions of Hyrule, over many many generations, has grown distrustful and wary of one another. Civil War is not out of the realm of possibility, and it’s up to you, a living reminder that two races can live together in harmony, to stop it. However you don’t have to. This is a completely sandbox game. Explore the world and sell your combat skills, or follow the story and become a hero. It’s up to you.
Gameplay
Now I want to get into a few gameplay features I had in mind. I’m not going to get too much Into it, as it will be discussed more in depth later on, but here are a few notable features.
EotP will use a basic RPG system, in which you earn XP and level up. The stronger enemy you defeat, the more XP you earn.
Magic will play a big role in your adventure, and the magic meter will return and be more important then ever.
Taking a page from Zelda II, health and magic will be upgraded as you level up. Heart containers are no longer a thing.
As a Sheikah and Hylian, you are able to use Sheikah and Hylian magic. Discover tomes, spell books, and bring them to teachers to upgrade your skills.
Learn swordplay from the greatest masters throughout the land and become a fierce warrior.
Items no longer go in infinite pockets. All items are stored in your horse or whatever animal you use as your mount, and you can bring a sword and shield, as well as 3 items and one additional outfit with you at a time. This will force you to think strategically on where you want to go and why to bring with you. Upgrades to bags will help with this the further along you level up.
Weapons to not break. Once you have one it will stay yours for the remainder of the game. Should you get duplicates, you can sell them for rupees.
Items like the hookshot, grappling hook, climbing spikes, bow and arrows, and other things can be found in stores or dungeons. The same can be said for maps or the land and special areas.
Dialogue options are also present, more akin to something like the Fallout series. Different options will prompt different reactions. NPCs will remember how you treat them, so remember to be polite!
All manner of creatures can be used as your steed. Horses, donkeys, rams, goats, elk, deer, and mythical creatures yet to be revealed. And the best part, they can all be registered and kept at stables that dot the landscape.
So that about wraps it up. I plan on doing character art for other main characters such as Zelda, and others who I want to keep a secret until their reveal. I also plan on going more in depth into gameplay and game elements I want to see included as well. I hope you enjoyed the outfits and concepts. I worked hard on them and I hope you find them original and enjoyable :)
