Was thinking about Impa (as usual) and personally I think that after the Hylian Civil War ended and her Survival Mode War Frenzy actually had the opportunity to dissipate, she just entered this state of lacking any particularly strong desire to keep living or view of the future, but stayed alive out of a sense of obligation to Zelda (who already lost one mother) and her general tendency towards all forms of inaction during that period. Weirdly, I think Ganondorf’s coup kind of broke her out of that, in the sense that it gave her a clear, meaningful purpose (protecting Zelda) and also so completely imploded the status quo that it meant there was a genuine possibility for things to be different, afterwards. Only for her to awaken as a Sage and face her effective/literal death allegedly prescribed by fate, at which point I think she just resigned completely and decided this was how it had to be, maybe justifying forfeiting her existence as being for Zelda’s sake.
I find this an interesting parallel to Ganondorf, who so adamantly refuses to die that he will literally give up his own body and sense of self if it means he persists.
Maaaaaaaan I can't stop thinking about Impa spening eons in the Temple of Hylia with The Master Sword sitting in the middle of it. Fi and Impa are the same, they are agents of the goddess with a duty toward her chosen ones, and Fi is standing there. Waiting. If she's even alive. How long can something wait, silent and alone, before it counts as dead? I'm sure Impa is so normal about this sword.
