DaYUM; I’ve accidentally let these pile up in my ask box, so I will answer all of these in one post… Prepare for a huuuuge rant under the cut! Let’s break this up into parts tho… and start with the biggest one yet: Laito and Ayato’s relationship.

i literally hate the dark/proshipper commentary in this fandom. i get it to an extent; the ships in diabolik lovers are obviously dark and i don’t disagree with that! but some of you just do not know nuance 😭 you don’t have to suddenly be part of a community or label yourself as a proshipper that accepts all kinds of depraved things just because you like one kind of dark, horror-adjacent content?? don’t let anybody tell you otherwise.

and there’s nuance to “fiction does not affect reality” too, because that’s just a blatantly untrue statement. it’s so important to consume media critically lest you fall for propaganda or conditioning. i don’t think an otome game about supernatural beings is going to tip any scales, but you can’t just apply a blanket statement of “all fiction doesn’t impact reality” because not all fiction is made with the same intentions or with the same audiences in mind. although the book wasn’t written with perverted reasons, Lolita has been used so many times to groom young girls into relationships with much older men. there’s a reason why many governments want to ban books with themes that don’t suit their agendas. there’s a reason why an author got arrested a year or two ago in my country for writing a “dark romance” book that was literally just CSAM. fiction has power. fiction shapes the mind and the world around us.

they’re my ultimate DL comedy-trauma tag team—like a Shakespearean tragedy if the actors were also doing improv drunk. when they're not launching cold war-level emotional warfare just to watch reiji's blood pressure spike, they're out here… accidentally being tender. emotionally co-dependent, yes. slightly homicidal, also yes. but tender

laito was ayato’s human shield in the gladiator pit of cordelia’s hell-nursery, and ayato lowkey returns the favor later on—standing between laito and the soul-crushing realization that all their trauma was handpicked and custom-ordered by ketchup daddy himself for his adam-eve multiverse breeding program. father of the year, truly in the flaming chaos of ayato’s DF route, where even the rats were probably side-eyeing his wedding plans, most of the brothers peaced out. but laito?  the only one who was somewhat curious to accept the wedding invite to ayato and yui’s wedding. especially since laito, at that point, is running on emotional fumes. his capacity to give a damn has been surgically removed by years of unresolved cordelia damage and a personal brand of amoralism that functions more as trauma armor than actual conviction

and sure, maybe he's not out here throwing glitter and confetti at ayato’s emotional glow-up—but that’s kind of the point. by DF, laito isn’t just tired—he’s emotionally bankrupt. and when ayato, newly introspective and finally growing, reaches back out, laito doesn’t see healing—he sees a ghost of what he never got. it’s not simple bitterness; it’s that quiet, corrosive guilt you carry when part of you still blames someone for not saving you, even though you know they were just a child too, just as powerless and trapped

his LE route makes this brutally clear—laito both resents and forgives ayato for looking away during cordelia’s abuse. he understands it wasn’t malice; it was ignorance, fear, survival. but understanding doesn’t erase the damage. it just makes it harder to hate him. and that, somehow, is worse

and then there's that the glorious meta moment in DF where laito breaks character just long enough to dump critical exposition in Yui’s lap: “hey girl, btw, ayato’s the only one of us who really hated Cordelia—maybe look after him for me, kthx.” like okay, king of emotional repression, slipping in a heartfelt confession wrapped in exposition. that’s his version of love. he’s not handing off the role of ayato’s keeper because he stopped caring; he’s doing it because he still does, and he knows he’s too burnt out to keep carrying that responsibility without breaking himself further in the process

and in MB (maybe HDB too? memory’s murky), laito’s constant needling feels less like trolling and more like emotional exposure therapy. he sees ayato for what he is: someone too soft to survive this vampire hellworld unless he gets pushed into owning his feelings—especially the ones about yui. sadistic therapy, basically. annoying? yes. effective? also yes

also, let’s not forget: ayato got most of the heat from karlheinz in MB (if I recollect well) for their little oopsie murder of cordelia—even though laito and kanato were just as hands-on with the matricide. daddy just loves to pick favourites and blame the one with the most guilt capacity. and laito likely feels a certain level of obligation to ayato in the DF continuation due to this (this is admittedly more speculative on my part)

also, shoutout to kanato, the absolute feral gremlin third wheel of the group, screaming in the background and eating wax like it’s his job

honestly, it's not a total nightmare compared to pigeon-san’s route, but the eccentricity of oreo’s route just leaves me drowning in questions, and honestly, who has the time or energy to go digging through the Menreih Trench of poorly written plot points for this? not me, sis

let’s just pretend most of the route doesn’t involve yui and oreo getting horny on main while also—surprise!—being kidnapped by the tsuck bros not once, but TWICE (bc they went ahead and trusted the obvious red flag that was vamp Mertz—if you know, you know—because apparently they share EXACTLY one brain cell and are also colour-blind 🥴)

AND OF COURSE, we have the eternal side quest of the tsuck bros, who are just here to vibe and fuck around. this time, their genius idea is to revive Cordelia (yes, that Cordelia, the one who set the bar for shit DL moms), just to somehow convince vegan cookie to murder ketchup daddy. and i’m over here like:

why? didn’t oreo already want to murder ketchup daddy enough to get the job done? i’m sure yui’s life could’ve been conveniently thrown into the mix here, no need for all this extra resurrection drama. also, where’s the logic behind not reviving Beatrix in, like, reiji’s or shu’s route? for that matter, why not revive mommy dearest in Laito’s route (probably because they don’t got the brain power to even attempt the base level of nuance that would require, let’s be real)??? Rejet must’ve been having a field day in the writers' room on whatever meth-induced brainstorming session they had before turning this into "plot"

WHY should i feel sorry for Cordelia? because she loved ketchup daddy soooooo much, it was such a deep, speciallove, so special it was like a clearance-sale-level kind of love or something, like pls—this woman literally abused her children to get ketchup daddy to hate her more??? what kinda tragic romance garbage is this

laito’s meta moment: in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment of self-awareness, laito drops the bomb that oreo is the only one who truly hated his mom. and then, in a miraculous 10-second 180, oreo is suddenly over all his hatred and is like, “yeah, i guess Cordelia wasn’t that bad” like??? did i miss something??? he’s mad at ketchup daddy for being evil (which... fine), but now Cordelia is off the hook????

also, ayato needing a whole arc to not want to kill his mom but still want to kill his dad? like both of them suck, dude. i don’t even know what’s happening anymore

AND THE CHERRY ON TOP? oh, you thought we were done? lul

get this: ayato and his bros don’t have a single drop of founder DNA. zip. nada. despite being the biological children of Cordelia, who absolutely, 100%, canonically does have founder DNA (in this ketchup-daddy-generated universe, I guess)

WHAT IN THE MENDELIAN NIGHTMARE IS THIS. dominant genes? recessive traits? never heard of her

now, let’s talk about the adam-eve dumpster fire that is the plot. why is this insane ketchup-daddy-genocidal-fire a thing that only shows up in this route??? where was this hot mess in any other route? and if all the endings are post-Adam power-ups, why can oreo only deal with it in the vampire ending? pls explain before my brain is permanently fried

AND LET’S TALK ABOUT how, in the vampire ending, the suckamaki bros literally yeet out of their family ties when they hear about ketchup daddy’s death. meanwhile, the mukamis show up, say a word, and peace out. what is even happening??? in all the other routes, there’s at least a tiny bit of reluctant bonding, but here? nah. i guess they really don’t care

also, i’m cackling at the manservant ending where ayato and yui get killed by some low-tier vamps because he let one burn and it was a whole moral comeuppance. and now the vampire mob claims the genocidal fire is their fault? alrighty then, batman

AND, in brute, oh my god. yui just refuses to believe ayato is dead, convinced he’s on a super-special-emo-mission-or-whatever. like, yes, yui, let's just pretend the guy who is definitely DEAD is still alive because you like the idea of having babies with him. and carla is just like ‘lemme take advantage of this, lickety-split’ 🥴 ew

I'm just amazed at how you can hate and despise a non-real pixel woman about whom you yourselves have invented so much nonsense. Hatred for her prevents you from thinking for yourselves so much that you don't even want to listen to another point of view with gathered evidence and at least try to have adequate discussions, without negativity, outrage, and dismissive attitudes. Hatred for her makes you hate people who simply enjoy analyzing her character; and I'm afraid to think what your attitude is towards real women if you can't even empathize with a fictional one. Well, of course, she's a woman, not a boy you can cuddle and comfort, right; that boy might later, in some route, even rape Yui, but that's okay, he just had a hard childhood.

Each time he received poor grades, she imposed EXCESSIVELY HARSH PUNISHMENTS (過剰なほどのきびしい罰), such as pushing him into the cold pond in the garden.” The lake scene is just ONE of the many exaggerated punishments she made him go through. Those punishments were always portrayed as too much, and not mere “discipline”.

By saying “if you can’t do that, then you’re not my child. If you’re not the best, then I have no need of you. I’m done using you”, she crosses a line that goes far beyond ordinary cruelty. She dismisses Ayato’s worth entirely, tying his value solely to his usefulness TO HER. This is pure emotional abuse. To make matters even worse, she says these words while making out with Richter in front of her child, who is crying and struggling.

Slapping a child just because he wanted to play with his brothers is clearly a sign of abuse. At around eight years old, Ayato should have been free to enjoy the simple joys of childhood without fear. On top of that, she actively tries to distance him from his siblings by saying “You’re different from the other children”. That made him feel isolated, like someone who would never truly be understood. It’s easy to see how experiences like this shaped Ayato into the type of person who refuses to open up to others, pretends everything is fine and keeps everything to himself until he breaks, due to fear of being mocked or rejected.

Also, WHIPPING a child is something absolutely no parent should do. He was clearly in pain.

If Cordelia weren’t abusive, Ayato would have had no reason to prefer the ghoul’s dungeon over home. He knew that both places would strip him of freedom and subject him to pain.
