Asteria held her breath at his words, letting out a puff of air from her cheeks when he’d finished, an eye brow quirking as she looked at him. “Well by my calculations you’re being what the earthen’s call a scrooge. I’m still learning all the carol’s so I couldn’t sing even if I wanted to, I might give it by best shot anyway considering how much you don’t want me to. But my original intentions were to see if you want any ginger bread. Burnt I’ll admit, it just- adds a crunch? Crunch, we’ll go with that.”

“I’d say more of a Grinch, since the Scrooge name involves the lack of charity, etc.” Dexter tilted his head as he explained with a somewhat bored tone. “You know it’s funny how people are all about love and forgiveness but the moment they get the chance to annoy the hell out of people, they do... I’ll pass on the ginger bread.” He said not out of ungratefulness– though it might’ve been had he genuinely not liked ginger bread since he was a child.

“Well, Charles told me to kill myself. Carmen got possessed by darkness and has been absent ever since. So, you know, totally normal stuff.” Dexter was one of the few people who had actually understood Athena’s family situation, so she didn’t mind telling him what went on. 

“He–” Dexter instantly replied, but failed to find the right words. He knew her relationship with his siblings wasn’t the best. Quite frankly he had no idea how he’d managed to befriend the three of them at some point. He knew they’d fought, he knew they sometimes didn’t consider her part of the family but what he’d just heard made him want to rip Charles’ head off, and he would’ve had he been there, and had he not heard about Carmen or been concerned over Athena herself. Carmen, Carmen, such a complicated thing. He didn’t know whether to feel concerned or relieved she wasn’t very present. He licked his lips before speaking. “I hope you ripped his tongue out right there or I’ll have to.” He said half joking, half really not joking. “Is she alright.. are you alright?”

Roxie couldn’t deny that she liked a little back and fourth; a battle of sarcastic wit. He seemed to be providing it, so she responded, “Look, pretty boy, I’m sure you’ve got a flock of girls, and maybe even guys, just waiting to jump you. Why don’t you just go play with them?”

Dexter rolled his eyes. “Oh I did that in the morning. I kinda got bored.”

“No. I- i - i don’t want anything from you, except for you to realise that not everyone has had whatever peachy life you think they have, but- but at least we’re all still trying. And i think that’s- that’s worth something.” She wanted to blink away from his intense eyes, but she didn’t. “I don’t settle for anything. I’m.. I’m not happy all the time. But sometimes the only way to not be alone is to.. To pretend you are.” Strangely enough, Bailey had never admitted this to anybody before.

He listened to her speak with a quite arrogant posture. What she said made sense to his ears, yet his brain and his heart blocked whatever reasoning there could be made. He was angry, December and the Holidays and the quite stupid traditions did that to him. He was aware he made the girl uncomfortable, he didn’t care. His words and hatred weren’t exactly directed to her anyways, he simply wanted an answer that made him find some sort of peace. “What happens when you stop pretending? or do you just... live in a lie?”

“Actually we were never friends, you were friends with Carmen, not me. You just were someone I’d spend time with because the Hatter asked me to.” This wasn’t necessarily true, but it also wasn’t entirely a lie. He used to consider Dexter an older brother of sorts, but now things were different. Maybe Time just did what it was supposed to do. “I just thought your face seemed a bit weird.” he didn’t have any actual reason, so he just said the first thing that came to his mind. For some reason the mention of them not being friends anymore didn’t hit him like he thought it should, it wasn’t a lie after all. ”I don’t think so, no. I’m the right amount of Charles as it is.” his confidence oozing from his words.

The boy’s words stung a little, deep deep within. Of course he didn’t let any of it surface. That’s exactly what he wanted after all, losing all connections so no one would be left to rip his heart apart. A sly smile remained, “Oh you’re right, your sisters were the interesting ones. Well I appreciate the correction and your concern too, truly. But my face is alright and you’re the right amount of Charles, I really doubt there’s any space for me, God forbid an unbalanced Charles. Quite frankly I don’t want you around either so move along. Go chase a butterfly or something.
