she refrained from making a smart comment about how even talking here did not make this unbiased. the way they knew one another was anything but unbiased. she craned her neck slightly, trying to subtly get a peek of the materials in his folder, "well... i'll help as much as i can. if you think this will help and catch her killer, of course." she took a tiny sip of the coffee before setting it back down, "shame i'm not in handcuffs." she quipped.
" great, thank you, i appreciate it. " with his hues glued to veronica, he observed her actions, brows raising at her somewhat obvious attempt at snooping. " stop doing that, there's nothing juicy in here. " he glanced down at the first question, trying to ignore the comment made about handcuffs with a shake of his head. " do you remember much about hope's relationship with julien ? what led to their breakup ? did he ever come around after ? "
Nothing inspired frustration or infuriation like the medical field. Lucia knew that fact well, having internalized it more times than perhaps was healthy for anyone. There was a process to everything, of course, a set of rules so carefully laid out that helped ensure nothing was missed and, most importantly, that no one was sued into oblivion. Lucia hadn't seen that outcome yet, but the possibility of it haunted her. "Of course it hurt," Lucia briskly retorted, "it was a large shard of glass in your arm. However," she added with a sigh, "removing it complicated the visit. Which is why," Lucia said with as much authority as she could muster, "there will be no cutting through the red tape."
Lucia sighed, pulling her work station closer and entering a few preliminary notes from the encounter. "I need to get your vitals, make sure you're not about to go into hypovolemic shock, and see if I can glue or stitch you up as you put it without damaging the muscles in your arms and ensuring function remains." Lucia sighed. "I am sorry, Javi," she added gently, looking over at her patient. "But this is going to be a little bit. I'll do my best to make it comfortable and quick." Pausing for a moment, Lucia considered a brief idea. Reaching behind her to where she kept things for her younger patients, Lucia pulled out a jar filled with Dum Dums. "Do you want a sucker before we get started?"
as lucia held out the jar of dum dums, a flicker of nostalgia washed over him. despite his disdain for hospitals, the offer of a lollipop provided a small comfort, a fleeting distraction from his anxiety. he hesitated for a moment, then nodded, accepting the candy from the jar in lucia's outstretched hand. " thanks. " he murmured, voice slightly strained as he unwrapped the colourful treat and popped it into his mouth, savoring the grape-flavoured sweetness that temporarily masked the scent of the sterile environment.
" how long's ' a little bit ' ? give me a realistic expectation here. thirty minutes ? an hour ? " the question about the duration of a little bit hung in the air. he needed a reasonable expectation to anchor himself in the stressful setting. " vitals shouldn't take more than a few minutes to get, right ? "
jack had hoped something calm would keep his bones from itching out of his skin with desire to do something stupid, but apparently he'd chosen the wrong company for that. "normally, i work at home. i don't do 'relaxing' here." and it seemed like trying was just a mistake.
he let out a long exhale and tipped his head back. "well, you won't have sex with me, you don't like the movie, and i don't keep anything worth drinking in this place. so we should go out. what do you normally do for fun in a town this small, huh? everyone remembers when you get piss drunk and do something stupid at a bar."
" you're still thinking about the sex thing ? jesus, man. if i knew it was going to live rent free in your head, i would've done it out of pity. " he replied out of jest, nudging jack gently with a grin plastered across his face. " i do exactly that: get piss drunk and do something stupid at a bar. it's great fun. " he leaned back against the sofa, hues fixating on the ceiling. his boredom was palpable, and the idea of an adventurous night, whether it'd be out or at home, appealed to him. " we could get coke. i'd be able to pay attention if i do some. "
it took a lot of restraint for abril not to snort at his question. contrary to popular opinion, staying in wasn't boring to her at all. she could catch up on her readings for school or tv shows for her own amusement, or maybe even pull out her sketchbook. if abril was feeling particularly brave, maybe she'd try out a new cooking recipe courtesy of youtube or she'd let herself be consumed by a good comic book. the possibilities were endless. did that make her sound like a total loser? probably but she didn't mind. their home was her safe space. " something fun? so watching the twilight saga with me isn't fun?" faux gasping at the question, she pretended to be offended before pausing said iconic film and turning her full attention to her roommate and arguably the closest thing she had to family in mercer hollow. "what did you have in mind? face masks?"
the twilight saga ? face masks ? how javi had managed to get himself into a position where those were the only two options still baffled him. " i can't believe you like this shit, " he grumbled as he pointed at the television, head shaking in disapproval. " it's just pale people sparkling. what's the appeal ? why couldn't we watch something like alien or the blair witch project ? i would have much preferred that. " the mundane night was already suffocating, and yet javi still had a few hours left before he'd even consider calling it a night — something had to change. idly twirling his half-empty glass of whiskey, he turned to glance at abril, shoulders shrugging. " maybe we can drive to salem and have a drink somewhere ? or i don't know, maybe you can call maeve over ? she's fun. "

"what can i say, we're opportunists." she wasn't entirely sure if she hated or loved being compared to hope, even after all these years. growing up, all she ever wanted was to be just like hope, special and shiny and a god amongst boring, ordinary worshipers. the only thing she wanted in equal measure was to be so different from hope that people couldn't ever say that hope was better than her—she'd always been a paradox and a half; in that way, she was just like every other woman in the mercer family line. "oh, so you do care about playing by the rules for the sake of the case, and here i thought you weren't going to disclose your personal connection to hope and my mom. in that case, i guess it'll be common knowledge, and i don't have to keep it secret."
he understood that hope's case demanded integrity and impartiality, and in javi's mind, keeping his personal connection with veronica hidden was essential to ensure a fair investigation. however, ren's threat to expose their affair left javier in a difficult position. it turns out blackmail isn't fun if you're on the receiving end. “ fuck, okay, we'll do it your way. ” he huffed, arm extending out to motion for the other to sit in the chair across from him. “ i might not even have the answers to whatever questions you have, but what do you want to know ? you want to know if what's being aired on the podcast has any merit ? honestly, i couldn't tell you. people don't want to talk, and we can't force anyone to come in for questioning just because a podcast claims that something is true — we need evidence. ”
javi had a hard time enduring moments of stillness. whether it was due to his perpetually busy lifestyle or his adhd, the notion of being stagnant triggered a wave of anxiety within him. " don't you get bored just staying in ? " he asked, his restlessness evident in his tone. " i'm not trying to be difficult, honestly, but i don't think i can make it through this movie sober. " it wasn't his intention to dampen the mood or hurt anyone's feelings, but his mind had been wondering for the past half hour, and the screen before him continued to blur into insignificance. " can we do something fun ? "

javier groaned softly as the the gentle glow of a street lamp illuminated through his bedroom window. with years of routine ingrained within him, he stirred awake precisely at four-thirty in the morning, slowly slipping out from the bed in an attempt to not disturb maeve. truth be told, he was surprised to see that she hadn't up and left in the middle of the night — something that he wouldn't have been opposed against. making his way into the bathroom, he turned on the shower, letting the warm water cascade over him, shaking off any lingering drowsiness as he went through his morning routine — brushing his teeth with precision, the rhythmic sound of bristles against enamel filling the silence.
did he regret crossing the line ? should they have kept their friendship strictly platonic ? the questions were blazing through his mind at the speed of light as he dried himself off. wrapping a towel around his waist, javi headed back towards the bedroom and laid down beside the other, gently shaking her shoulder. " maeve, wake up. "
"a formality... so i'm not a suspect in the brutal murder of my own daughter? thanks, javi. means a whole lot." veronica deadpanned, nails drumming against the table. calls from javier weren't usually crime related. she didn't like this setting (even with a roleplay idea in mind). she wrapped her hands around the coffee mug, "thanks. it's fine." she didn't lift it to her mouth, just holding it in her hands on the table. she wondered, briefly, if maybe she should have called her lawyer. she let a breath out of her nose, "so what kind of questions should i expect?" veronica shrugged, "couldn't have just come to my house and asked?"
javier leaned back in his chair, observing veronica as she fidgeted with the cup of coffee he'd just set down. " i understand this setting may not be ideal, and believe me, i would have much prefered to do this at your home, but it's necessary for an unbiased investigation, " he explained before reaching for the file on the table, flicking through the papers and photographs to locate his notes. " i need to ask you some questions about hope, obviously, but they're mainly about the relationships she had with others. real easy questions, i promise. but like i mentioned before, we can stop whenever you want to. "
Lucia did, occasionally, forget that medical knowledge was not something widespread. She forgot that the average person didn't know what was and was not worth a visit to the ER, that some people consider medical treatment a right while others consider it an impossibility. All of that paled to the fact that Lucia, in this moment, was attempting to process why someone would remove a shard of anything from their arm.
She took a breath. When that failed to return her to her professional mindset, she took another. Once she felt like she was able to have a conversation with the grown man in front of her, Lucia opened her mouth. "Of course you're a bit of an idiot," she recognized as she pulled up her station, logging into EPIC with the ease of practice. "You removed the only thing that was holding the blood inside of you. Luckily," she added with a small smile, ducking her head as she realized just how rude she had been, "you came to the right place and we can help. So, first thing's first, take a breath for me." Hiding behind her hair as best she could, even though it was pulled back and her trademark red lipstick was missing for her shift, she did give her best I am in control here smile to Javi. "We have you, and you'll walk out of here in no time at all."
Turning back to the screen, Lucia found her professionalism again amidst the remains of her shame for being rude. "Now, we can't dermabond you until a doctor sees you, which," she looked over to Javi with a smile that was mostly teeth, "isn't me. So, any allergies we should know about? How's your immunizations? Any dizziness, tiredness, shortness of breath?"
he gritted his teeth, trying to downplay the throbbing pain in his arm. he didn't have time for doctors and their bureaucratic nonsense — all he really cared about was getting patched up quickly so he could go home and finally get some sleep. " it's easier said than done," javi grumbled, his voice laced with a hint of impatience. " tried to keep it in, but it really fucking hurt. " he flexed his fingers, feeling a twinge of discomfort shoot up his arm — a stubborn reminder of his impulsive behaviour.
glancing around the room, his gaze fixated on the god-awful fluorescent lights overhead. impatience gnawed at him, and he wanted to escape the sterile walls that felt closed in on him. lucia was just doing her job, but he didn't want to wait around for a doctor, so naturally, he tried his best to cut through the red tape. " do we really need to go through all this ? just glue or stitch me up, and i'll be on my way and out of your hair... i'd owe you one."

❝ interesting is not the term you use to describe someone you want another shot at. just a heads up. ❞ though she couldn't think of a better word either. ❝ we talked about you at hope's funeral. thought i was sharing some good advice about targeting you if she wanted an in with the cops. turns out she was one step ahead of me. ❞ a slut had not been the description maeve had been expecting from javier, the chuckle as she sat back down next to him. ❝ a slut without options from the sound of things. if you're considering going back. ❞
she watched javier with a smirk, waiting for the reaction. of course there was the possibility she had pushed her luck after so adamantly pushing him away. his words eased any lingering thought of lingering resentment from him. ❝ oh, i know. it’s intentional. you're too easy to get a reaction from. ❞
" i'm a simple man; if somebody's a good fuck, i'll fuck 'em again. " considering that maeve was being a tease, it's safe to say that javier doesn't want to talk about veronica mercer any more. in fact, his thoughts are consumed by ' maeve, maeve maeve ! ' add in a few alarm bells and some warning signs, and you've got a clear picture how little goes through his mind.
"Wait, wait, wait, wait - hold on. You mean to say that the service hadn't even started yet? All those people were crying and no one had even given a speech at the podium? I thought I'd just like...blacked out the whole thing and we were already on to the reception. Shit, Javi - now I feel bad." She pulled on his arm and abruptly came to a stop, huffing a bit childishly. "Should we go back? Why would you let me do this? I don't exactly make funerals a common occurrence in my life, I don't know the protocols! I wasn't talking about ditching the service - but like, wakes and receptions and shit - people mill in and out. Right? Right? Why would you go along with that - and fuck you you know I think that's a terrible habit and you're going to die early because of it and I'm going to have to ship you off to Saturn earlier than necessary." She paused, maybe a bit dramatically sucking in a breath after the string of words that had come out of her mouth in seemingly one go.
Once she'd gathered herself she scrunched her nose at him. "Also, you should rethink this whole wanting to be missed at a dead college girl's funeral thing. I don't think it's a good look."
" what ? why are we stopping. i want to keep moving, i want a whisky. do you not wanna drink anymore ? " javi questioned impetuously, taking a drag from his cigarette as he squeezed the other's arm, trying to provide some easement. " you need to chill the fuck out, kara. you're, like, overthinking things and it's making me nervous. we already left, we're not going back. "
just like two puerile siblings, he pulls kara forward a few steps, attempting to prevent their drinking plans from being scrapped. " i'll make you a deal. i won't light up another smoke for the rest of the day if we go to the bar. " the deal was certainly phony — as per usual, after a drink or two, he'll be puffing away like no tomorrow, but perhaps kara had forgotten that about him... or at least one could hope. " i'm an attention whore, don't shame me for it. "
❝ what ? ❞ maeve looked at javier over her shoulder. ❝ you’re kidding. i didn’t think ronnie still had it in her. hope always made it seem like her mom was some stuck up bitch. ❞ and it’s not like maeve was the kind of friend you’d bring home to your parents. ❝ i just assumed she wasn’t getting any. you know how old couples are. ❞ at least, the stereotype that was painted of them. the ball and chain, staying together for the children. the narrative pushed that all marriages were loveless. and sexless. ❝ are you still ? ❞
she shrugged at javier’s condition. sure, she knew he would be there for her. she knew that even before he had to make a whole scene of it. the hard part was admitting that she needed him. ❝ yeah, sure. whatever. ❞ at least if she ever did, she’d be able to wave ‘ you asked for this ’ in his face when he inevitably got sick of their relationship not being purely a good time anymore. ❝ i dunno. i can think of a few other guys that'll tell you a different experience. y'know because they're man enough to do something about it. ❞ maeve teased, taking a step back towards him as the conversation lightened.
despite maeve's blunt remarks catching him off guard, a faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips — she was always unfiltered and he loved it. " crazy, right ? she's not that bad, but she's, um, interesting. i definitely wouldn't wanna cross her. " he said, head shaking from side to side at the other's question, hand running through his hair. " haven't slept with her since hope died. honestly, not even sure if i'd even sleep with her now. i mean, i probably would because i'm a slut, but it'd feel weird. "
' they're man enough to do something about it. ' those words alone were enough to send javier into overdrive, inhaling sharply as he tried to suppress his impulses. perhaps if they were ANYWHERE else right now he'd already be all over maeve, but on the same consecrated grounds where hope's funeral was held ? it was certainly a little off-putting. " don't say shit like that, you're killing me. "
❝ you can’t use any of this shit. ❞ she trusted javier. bending the rules to keep her out of trouble probably should’ve made her question him, but it was different having someone looking out for her. even if she chewed him out every time he got close to knowing that. ❝ that doesn’t reflect anything about theo, okay ? if this is just some sneaky way to get information, you’re fucking dead to me. you better not just be pretending to listen. ❞
javier saying he was proud wasn’t what she had been expecting. not only because their relationship had always been pretty surface level, all of their affections unspoken, but also because of her past. the expectations for meeting him had been fighting again or getting high to ignore it all. ❝ you’re not going to try to make this a regular thing, are you ? ❞ maeve asked, half teasing but also half worried those might be his exact intentions. the way that death can shake a person and make you think of everything you didn’t say. maybe just compensating for her comment about him not caring.
" i won't betray your trust, i promise. " javi said in an attempt to assure her, emphasising the seriousness of his commitment, hoping to convey his sincerity. " hell, i'll even give you some dirt on me so that we're even. " secrets: javi didn't have too many of them, but the ones that he did have were held close to his chest — he could share about his upbringing or the amount of collateral damage he'd managed to rack up over his years in the military, but those secrets were too dark. he needed to offer something more normal. " i fucked mrs. mercer for a bit. " infidelity seemed to be a more acceptable topic.
he can't help but laugh as maeve questioned his intentions, shaking his head from side to side before tilting back to look up at the night sky. " as long as you know that i'm here if you need me, this doesn't need to be a regular thing. " his words make him cringe inside, eyes shutting momentarily in an attempt to snap out of the sappy mood he seemed to be in. " besides, i would rather makeout and get left with blue balls; gotta love the maeve experience. "
open starter for anyone interested! when: post-funeral, within a week where: at the mercer hollow hospital
Certain times of the year were always a miserable time to work in the medical field. Saint Patrick's Day, New Years, and just about any other holiday one could imagine produced a mess concocted from the worst slurry of idiocy, desperation, and emotion possible. Now, so soon after the funeral of Hope Mercer, Lucia had been dreading clocking back in for her shift. It had been hours now since she'd arrived but Lucia still sat perched on pins and needles for something to happen. One didn't make it this far in this field without trusting one's gut and as she turned around, her stomach sank to her toes. "What are you doing here?" She asked in amazement, before looking at the front desk for confirmation everything was alright. Lucia sighed, sliding into her professional visage. "Come with me, I'll get you check out and you can explain how that," she said with a nod, "happened."
silently he followed lucia, teeth chewing into his inner cheek to mask the pain he felt, his steps steady. despite javi's aversion to hospitals, he knew that he'd only make things worse if he tried to stich himself up, especially with how bad he was at using his left hand. " not much to explain. i'm just a fuckin' idiot. " truthfully, he hadn't been searching for a fight. but after a few drinks and some loose inhibitions, all hell broke loose outside the bear den and, well, somehow he ended up with a HUGE shard from a beer bottle in his arm. the worst part ? instead of coming to the hospital right away, he decided to take the shard out and thought everything would be fine.
" thought it'd stop bleeding by now, " he murmured as he trailed behind the other, holding a crimson-stained towel against his forearm. " but it's been, like, two hours and it ain't slowing down. was kinda hoping you could just dermabond me up. "

"I mean, no one goes to a funeral and stays for the entire time other than like, immediate family anyway...right?" Was it disrespectful to leave early? Had she been doing this wrong all this time? Besides - who would even notice? They came in, they said their condolences, they stood around and nodded to their fellow Mercer Hollow townspeople...they came, they saw, they...would conquer, hopefully.
She wasn't all that surprised when Javier gave in, though. And she was thankful for it, admittedly. Even just stepping outside the cathedral doors seemed to make it easier to suck in a breath of air, and Kara seemed to open right back up again. Funerals weren't a common occurrence in Kara's life, and it wasn't a good environment for her. She didn't know how to be in such a place.
"Thank you," She murmured after they'd walked a few paces away, looping her arm through his. "I really don't think we'll be missed."
" you're definitely supposed to stay at a funeral for the whole service, if you can. if you're planning on ditching, you usually do that during the transition between the funeral and the reception. " he inhales heavily as they're finally met with fresh air, no longer surrounded by the musty smell of an old church. " have you been ditching funerals early this whole time ? shit, kara. i don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but you're for sure going to hell. "
reaching into his pocket, javier pulled out an almost empty pack of marlboros and offered one to kara before lighting one for himself. " speak for yourself, " he said, taking a drag from his cigarette. " i want people to notice that i'm gone, i want to be missed. if i come into work tomorrow and don't see an angry email about us leaving early, i'm going to be very, very sad. "

ren had stewed over what to do about the whole 'lieutenant rojas' situation the entire week. she thought about going to the captain, and then ultimately decided no one on the force could be trusted to do the right thing when it came to their own people. then, she thought about going to the papers, but they'd rake her mom over the coals along with him, so that option was out. in the end, she could go to internal affairs, or she could keep the information to herself. she was still debating between the two when she walked into his office without knocking. "so here's the deal," she kicked the door shut behind her and folded her arms over her chest, "i won't tell anyone that hope was blackmailing you if you tell me how much of the bullshit the chronicle reports is true."
he looked up from his desk, body jolting out of suprise as ren barged into his office, taking note of her folded arms and determined posture. " are you trying to blackmail me about... blackmail ? it's nice to know that you're filling hope's shoes to the t. " the ultimatum hung in the air as javier silently weighed the consequences of both actions, resting his arms against the desk and leaning over in an attempt to hide the old charity mercer case files he'd been going through before ren bursted in. " this is not the time or place for this discussion. " he said firmly, hoping to maintain some semblance of professionalism. " besides, giving you information, even if it may seem insignificant, could jeopardize the case. is that really what you want for your sister ? "
