open who — camila reyes-brown setting — sweetwater memorial and funeral services
cami's nic fit is in full swing right now. her fingers twitch at her sides as she makes her way through the wake, letting old ladies who barely know her touch her shoulders and sob about how sorry they are — and then she has to comfort them. as if she isn’t the one burying her husband. and yeah, maybe they weren’t in love like a normal marriage, but these people don’t know that. and besides, john was still her best friend — she is grieving. She does love him. when she finally pulls the latest of her husbands elderly admirers off of her, camila plans on beelining to the door for a cigarette. john would hate that — he always complained when she smelled like smoke and it would seep into their furniture. but john went and blew up their perfect life, leaving her to clean up the pieces and try to find the freezer space for seven hundred bland, unseasoned casseroles that people won’t stop bringing over so fuck what he would or wouldn't think. maybe she’ll start smoking in the house — in his office out of spite to piss off his spirit. the door is in sight, a light at the end of the tunnel and cami can practically taste a cigarette when... fuck. someone cuts her off to offer condolences and she plasters on a faux smile. "hi honey," she greets them, "thanks for coming out. it means so much to the family."
ever since a string of deaths in the family and close family friends during his early teens and then later when he returned home from deployment, funeral homes gave vincent the creeps. then again, he supposed they weren't anyone's cup of tea at the end of the day. still, he found himself tipping his dress cowboy hat to a few nice older ladies who knew his father and trying to find some way to sneak out a side door. he noticed he might not be the only one with that idea when he saw the widow of the moment herself, ms. reyes-brown inching her way away from the condolences line.
"why hello there, ms. camila, ma'am. so sorry for your loss," he said once the person who interrupted her path cleared the way. vinny lowered his voice and offered up his hand with his next question. "excuse me if i'm wrong but it looks like you could use a breather before you go on greetin' anyone else. i know a side entrance, i may or may not have been about to use myself." he nodded the way, indicating he was willing to take her there.
