Fucking fantastic. Arguably the worst person who could’ve seen the tragic mess at Jaq’s feet seemed to appear out of thin air, as if he knew to show up just when Jaq was already wounded to deliver the final blow. “There’s another one in the cabinet, for accidents like this,” he repeated through gritted teeth, forcing his best angered smile. The bottle of wine seemed to drop in slow motion, and Jaq sucked in a breath as Lucifer released it, knowing exactly what was coming for him next. It wasn’t the first time his boss’ son tried to accuse him of injuring him. “I’ve never once thrown something at you in the twenty years I’ve been working in this house. Why would I start now?” he challenged simply. It wasn’t something he hadn’t thought of, but assaulting Lucifer wasn’t worth losing his job and going to jail over.

“And how could you prove that’s true? It’s my word against yours.” There’s a devilish grin on his face, one that truly shows his true colors. Truthfully, though, Lucifer didn’t want to get Jaq fired. He was far too fun to play with. “Okay, so you didn’t throw it at me. I’ll just tell her it was a specialty wine from France that you stole from her personal collection. Then when I caught you, you dropped it.” He leans down and grabs a piece of the glass carefully. “See, the label is right here.” He smirks. “Better start cleaning up. She’ll be home soon. Oh, and you best believe you’ll be scrubbing the stains out of these pants as well.”

It had been a long week for Jaq at work, and to top it all off, he had spilled an entire tray of tea all over himself on the way back to the kitchen. “Fucking hell,” he said under his breath, looking down at his uniform and the lukewarm tea that’d spilled all over it. This would be a job for Ella this weekend for sure. The ceramic teapot had shattered on the floor, and what’s worse, the person across the hall had seen the entire thing. “You saw nothing, got it? I’ll clean it up. I’m supposed to be off, but … whatever. I’ll stay late. We have another teapot that looks the same in the cupboard. Just please don’t tell Eleanor, will you?”

Lucifer enjoyed playing the cat to the mouse in a game only he found joy in. The servants in his house were simply all pathetic, little mice. He didn’t respect them nor did he care about them. They were simply playthings for him to paw at. Normally it was Lucifer causing the chaos to get in trouble but when he walked into the kitchen and saw a shattered ceramic teapot, that he knew his mother loved, shattered to pieces. He began grinning from ear to ear. “Why shouldn’t I? You mean nothing to me. That was her favorite teapot.” Was that true? Not necessarily, but Lucifer didn’t care if he lied. He glanced at the glass bottle less than half full of wine in his glass. No one but Jaq his little friends so what was the harm in drinking from the bottle? “Oops,” he says as he drops the bottle and that too shatters. “Now, why would you try and throw that at me? Lucky me it missed everything but my pants. Hit the floor just before it got to me and wine splattered everywhere.” His lips curved into a smirk. “That’s the story my mother will believe after I tell her that I saw you drop her favorite teapot.”

Phoebe wasn’t sure how she was feeling. She was happy to be there with Lucifer without any drama, but at the same time she just had a feeling there would be it. They have never been this good for this long and she just didn’t know how things were going to go or if they would stay good. It was why she suggested they do a trial run, try to be out and public and see how that went. She just….wasn’t a relationship kind of girl so she was just as worried about screwing it up on her end.

She tried to keep those thoughts to herself as he spoke to her and she playfully shoved him at his question. Taking a sip of her champagne she just shook her head at him. “I dunno. We’ll see. I thought you liked the fact that it’s a cat and mouse game?” She looked up at him. “Correct me if I’m wrong though.”

Lucifer hated the way she looked up at him like that. It melted him, truly. He wasn’t sure how to handle all these feelings he had for her and going out to a public event with her was...strange. Usually he was there alone or with another girl and she would just give him shit for whatever he did. “I guess. I just like being the one that’s chased.” He smirked at her before taking a sip of his own champagne. “So, you’re not technically wrong. Unless you just want me to tell you you’re right.” He glanced over her. “I will tell you that you look gorgeous tonight though. You do every night, but your dress is stunning.”

After their recent talk Lucifer had seen Phoebe in a completely different light. She seemed so much more...mature. It was just nice to know that the two could sit down together and talk. Maybe it just won’t take six months for them to do it next time. Lucifer hoped at least. He could handle a deep conversation but he was not good at starting them. Still, with their new agreement and Phoebe on his arm as they entered the ball he felt...happy. Normally he was just content with Phoebe and never fully satisfied but he felt like he was for the first time in a long time with her. Lucifer does love her. That much is true. That’s what got them in this whole mess anyways. He was trying not to think of the details of it all and just enjoy her company. 

“Do you want something to drink?” Lucifer asked Phoebe as he walked towards the bar with her. “I’m having some wine. Champagne perhaps?” As if on cue someone on waitstaff walked by with a tray of champagne flutes. Lucifer dropped Phoebe’s hand and grabbed two of them, handing one to her. “Cheers,” he said before clinking his glass against hers and taking a sip. “Am I going to het a New Year’s kiss?” he asked, half teasing. He knew she would likely say something like ‘only if you behave’ or some other bullshit. It was fine though. Lucifer was going to actually try. Trying was the least he could do, right? Especially considering this is something he wanted first. 

Drizella was her mothers daughter after all, growing cold to just say what needed to be said with no personal emotions out there was a talent. Probably one that helped her climb her ladder to victory in most her cases. “Your dad.” She let out watching his moves carefully. “Sure does seem like you can as you stomp around. And it’s not like my behavior is different from any other day, you’re just extra on the snap back.” Laughing she nodded. “Never claimed I didn’t know that gift. Maybe you shouldn’t make it so easy.” 

“Our dad.” Lucifer was quick to correct her. There wasn’t any solid proof that they had different fathers. None that Lucifer had found at least. But, truth be told he did have his suspicions. “Why did you say it like that, anyways?” he asked, nose scrunching up. “Whatever. Just leave me alone. Don’t you have something important to do for work? Or literally anything better to do than piss me off more?”

Drizella simply rolled her eyes, pushing off the counter she had leaned against and shook her head softly. “Right, well. In that case learn to handle your alcohol better, and ease a hangover if you’re going to wake up the biggest asshole in the city, Lucifer. Can’t say I didn’t try.” 

“No, say it.” He was daring her to try his patience even more. “I can handle my alcohol just fine.” He scowled at her. “Try? All you did was try to piss me off and it worked. Big shocker there. You really have a gift, Drizella. Did you know that?” 

Phoebe took another sip of her drink, making herself comfortable. ‘About stuff,” she said casually, trying to power through her drink to make it easier for herself. “We’ve been doing pretty good lately and I guess it’s time to talk about stuff. Properly or whatever.” She looked at him. “I mean. That’s what you want right? To get this stuff out in the open and whatnot?” She was not good at this. She finished her drink and set her glass down, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Have you been fucking around? I haven’t been surprisingly. Even my side job has been solo work.”

“About stuff,” he repeated with raised brows. He took a sip of his drink and as she continued talking he chugged the rest. After setting the glass down he placed a hand on her thigh, just below where her short, black dress ended. “We have,” he agreed. “I suppose you’re right.” He had been wanting to have this talk as much as he dreaded it. “No,” he answered honestly. “I haven’t. I...I guess I’ve been waiting for you.” He bit the inside of his cheek. “I care about you a lot. And...I think I’m at the point in my life where I want to properly be with someone and not just for a little while. I’m not asking you to marry me or anything. I just...want to know what it’s like to love someone and for them to love me back.” His face was growing hot. He hated this so much. “I know I said something to you when we were drunk. And...I think I know what that is now. And I do feel that way about you still. We’ve known each other for so long it just makes sense that we would be together, right? Not out of obligation or because people expect it, but because we want to and because we care about each other.” He moved his hand up a little higher and rested his head on her shoulder. “I know that’s a lot. I’m sorry for just...letting it all come out at once and not really giving you a chance to talk yet. So, um, go ahead. Say what you need.”

Driz let him have that one and just clenched her jaw slightly with a little huff. She really was digging down the petty pen with that one. Shaking her head she just bit down harder as she stared him down. “You’re off your normal shit rocker, and it’s pretty obvious. I’d like to think I know you well enough to see that, Lucifer.” Relaxing her body she took in a small breath. “You’re still my brother, asshole. Is it girls.. is it mom… is it..” She wanted to say father, but she just shut up. Drizella knew her place for the most part, sometimes. Depended on the day. 

Lucifer liked the holidays. He did. He enjoyed the gifts and he enjoyed giving gifts. He was especially excited to give Phoebe something extravagant this year. But, he was robbed of a lot during holidays as a child. Specifically a normal set of parents. He loved his mother more than anything in this world. He was truly a mama’s boy at heart. No one would ever get in the way of that. But, he could never remember his father and then men his mother brought into their home were never good enough in his eyes. They were temporary replacements. “Is it what?” he snapped at her. “It’s not girls, it’s not mom, it’s not anything!”

“Plan to, yeah, seems to strike some sort of nerve in there.” Drizella almost laughed listening to him. “Fine you’ll step off, or fine take daddy’s princess down? I can do either without losing a second of sleep.” She shrugged before watching him carefully. Sure, it wasn’t unlike Lucifer to be this way, but it just felt … more. “Are you? Because you’re more snappy than usual and are just a doom cloud of anger. More then normal if I have anything to say on that part.” It was an odd approach, and she was certain normal families came to each other with concern in much softer ways. But this .. was just Drizella and Lucifer. “Stop talking to me like I’m an idiot. This is more then just some bullshit hangover. You have them often enough to know how to manage them better then this, Lucifer. “ 

“Just stop,” he said. “You’re being so fucking petty. It’s ridiculous. Act your age, remember?” He didn’t have it in him to continue mocking her nor to even conjure up a smirk. “How is that different from a normal day?” He rose his eyebrows. Lucifer didn’t appreciate her attempt at trying to seem concerned. As far as he knew it was fake bullshit or his mother put her up to it. “I really don’t know what you want from me. I just drank more than I normally do last night and feel sick. That’s it. Stop fucking pestering me.”

“Yes, the day your balls drop. Sounds like a good time to come around and out of my bitch cave.” She added the smirk still painted perfectly on her lips. While it was rather fun poking his buttons, and getting him worked up. There was a part of her that was.. worried almost. Or at least concerned for whatever was going through Lucifer. “First at least you know I’m a perfect lawyer. Saved your ass enough times, but if you want to keep talking that way. Maybe I’ll let you take the fall for fucking a play toy in public next time. Ooo, or better - just let it out and have her take the fall for it. One word and it’s an open case again. Not that you… care right? Probably don’t even remember her name. Second, asshole, I’m at the top with my bitter bitch attitude, while you’re still in teenage boy land. Lastly, whatever is crawling up your ass - pull it out. the fuck is going on anyways?” 

“Wooow, a middle school insult. I’m so hurt.” He rolled his eyes and went back to the fridge to find something to eat. To soak up the alcohol from the night before and possibly cure this hangover. “Yeah, whatever. Hold it over my head forever, why don’t you?” He scowled but his back was to her so she couldn’t see. “Fine,” he mumbled, dropping that subject that she never seemed to forget and always seemed to manage to bring up. “The fuck is that supposed to mean?” he asked. He closed the fridge as nothing seemed appetizing in the moment and reluctantly turned back to his sister. “I’m fine.” There wasn’t nothing horribly out of ordinary with him. He always drank, that much was true. There was the weird limbo he was in with Phoebe but that was nothing new. For the most part, he was just angry. He was always angry and he took his anger out on everyone around him for as long as he could remember. “I went out last night and I’m hungover. Big deal.”

phoebe had invited lucifer over because she was bored and he was the only company she had really been keeping lately. she didn’t find any fun in stringing him along anymore so she guessed this was the night to have the talk. she didn’t want it and she wasn’t really sure what she was going to say, but it was better than being home and alone. she had put on her cutest outfit and already had two glasses of bubbly ready when he knocked on her door. she let him in without a word and took his hand to her couch, where she gently pushed him there to sit. she knew he had no idea what was going on and she was using that to her advantage, going over the bubbly and taking both glasses before sitting in his lap and passing him a glass. “hi luci,” she said softly before taking a sip of her own drink. “thank you for coming over so late. i wanted to talk.”

When Lucifer received Phoebe’s invitation to her apartment he was not going to decline. It seemed that he was seeing her more and more frequently lately. Not that he was complaining because he did enjoy her company and she had been quite kind to him as of late. Still, part of his seemed like a trap and the other seemed what it might really be, which could just them finally talking like adults and addressing the situation at hand. He felt dumb arriving empty handed so had picked up some white and blue flowers on his way. Those seemed to be wintery colors and thought it was fitting. When he arrived and she let him in he set the flowers on the table as she already seemed to have an agenda. When she sat in his lap he took a glass and took a sip. “Hello,” he greeted. His brow furrowed when she said she wanted to talk. “About what?” he asked, already having an inkling on what it might be.

It was still so odd having just a plain jane conversation with Lucifer these days. Lottie could remember it like yesterday when they were just cuddled up in bed together talking about themselves. “Well cause ya’ seem like the type to not want anything too sweet in ya’ coffee. Ya come across a bitter tastein’ sorta fella.” She added. Not meaning to make any puns, but now it just had her giggling to herself hearing her own words. “ Oh, just fine sug’. There are so many sales for the holidays how could I be anything else. Not to mention the cute decor everywhere, and everyone’ just being in jolly spirits.” 

“You shouldn’t assume things about people. Not everyone is an open book.” He scrunches his nose up. Lucifer quite liked sweet things. He just wasn’t a very kind person. “I’m aware. The world goes overboard every year around the holidays but I feel it’s just so extra this year.” Lucifer was not in jolly spirits this year. He liked the holidays well enough but he felt off. Maybe it was because he was in some limbo with Phoebe or maybe he was just drinking too much. Regardless, he wanted it to be over with.
