The fireplace cracked, casting a warm glow on over the pair on the couch. They were still in their suits, having been about to head out to dinner. They barely got the front door open when they were stopped by a severe winter storm.
They had taken the week off for their anniversary. Jimmy had checked the weather forecast on Monday and it read that it would only be snowing lightly during the week. They hadn't thought to check it in the coming days and, unfortunately, the weather took a turn for the worse.
It was Saturday now and they had a booking at The Ranch, an upper high class restaurant, they had set months in advance. It was their favorite place and one that they go to every anniversary. Sadly, they were going to have to change their plans as, currently, they could barely open their front door. All they saw was snow piled far too high and heard the wind howling viciously before they closed the door and accepted their fate.
With the weather this bad, even if they got out the front door and to one of their cars, they probably couldn't get the car out of the driveway, much less down the road. That was, if anything was still open.
"I'm sorry Tango," Jimmy mumbled, laying on the couch with his face down in the cushions. His suit was getting rumpled and his hair, which had been slicked back, was now sadly drooping down the sides of his head.
"Jimmy, it's not your fault at all. The weather is unpredictable and we just got unlucky. There was no way you could have known," Tango insisted, patting his back as he watched the whiteout storm that had taken over their town.
“I still feel bad. We could have planned for this or gone a few days earlier instead of staying home,” Jimmy insisted, lifting his head up. His eyes were rimmed red and just a bit shiny with unshed tears.
Tango couldn't help but cup Jimmy’s face, letting his hand heat up slightly as he leaned forward and kissed the tears away. “We can still have a special day at home. We never had to go out to celebrate."
“Yes but-” Jimmy was cut off by Tango pressing his lips against his husbands, silencing any protests he had.
Tango held him there, letting his hand lift from Jimmy’s to brush back the strands of hair in his face. When he pulled away, he couldn't help but smirk as he saw a bright red flush to Jimmy’s cheeks.
“Enough trying to apologize for something that isn't anyone's fault or else I'm going to take away your ability to speak at all tonight,” he threatened, his tone very light and joking, his fake frown trembling as he struggled to keep it.
Jimmy couldn't help but grin at that, leaning into Tango more. “Alright, alright. Well, we still have dinner to think about, any ideas?”
"Of course I have one: My extra famous, super special anniversary grilled cheese," Tango joked, rising from the couch. He grabbed Jimmy’s hands, pulling him up and leading him to the kitchen.
"Oh, maybe we'll still be treated to a fancy dinner tonight by a Mister Chef Solidarity-Tek," Jimmy teased, squeezing Tango's hands.
"Chefs Solidarity-Tek. I can't do it all alone." Tango let go and headed for the fridge. He couldn't help but grin as he heard Jimmy let out a small snicker. He heard pots and pans clinking and turned to see Jimmy getting out a pan and a pot. Tango raised a brow at the pot, only for Jimmy to hold up a can of tomato soup.
"No grilled cheese is complete without a soup...and it's what we have on hand," Jimmy explained.
Tango shrugged and he made up the grilled cheese sandwiches, letting Jimmy watch over the soup and get plates and bowls. He noticed that they were still in their suits from their almost going out, but he found he didn't care much. He liked the atmosphere of just cooking together, even something as simple as grilled cheese.
After everything was plated up they went to go and sit in the living room, Tango leaning against Jimmy. They had on a cheesy Christmas movie, one that had Jimmy giggling.
"I don't think I could ever give up a high paying job I love for a small town cookie shop and a pretty face," he insisted, shaking his head.
"Not even my pretty face?" Tango asked, looking up at Jimmy and batting his eyes. "You wouldn't even be a little bit tempted?"
Jimmy hesitated at that, cheeks turning a bit pink. "W-well I mean you're a different story, we're married. But, I'd follow you wherever you go, even if it's to a little cookie shop."
"Even if you had to leave your high paying job you love?" Tango asked, finding his hopeful smile quirking up as he struggled to hold back a laugh.
"Even if I had to leave my high paying job I loved," Jimmy agreed, dipping his sandwich crusts in his soup and taking a bite. "I just hope you teach me how to bake, I'm hopeless when it comes to baked goods."
Tango snorted, lifting his soup bowl up to his mouth to sip it. They forgot spoons for the soup but at this point they were far too comfortable on the couch to get up. They had a fire going, a movie playing, and each other.
Once they finished eating they set the dishes on the coffee table and laid down, Tango laying on top of Jimmy, snuggling underneath a large, wool blanket.
"You know," Jimmy started, his hand lazily rubbing Tango's back. "I'm kind of glad we got snowed in. Dinner would have still been nice, but having just a quiet stay at home day is it's own kind of special."
Tango hummed in agreement, reaching for the remote to find another movie. "Yeah, we don't really need anything big to celebrate. All I need is you."
"Oh you sap," Jimmy huffed, leaning down and pressing a kiss to the top of Tango's head. "I love you so much."
"I love you too, now, want to watch another movie? I can get some popcorn together."
"That sounds lovely. I'll make some cocoa."
They didn't move right away though, still content to lay in each other's embrace a bit longer. Even if their original plans didn't happen, it didn't matter. All they needed was each other in the end.
