Wonjae and I have been friends since we were kids. We played together every weekend when I went to go visit my sister, Leah. One weekend, we were playing on the monkey bars and I was waiting for my turn to go next, the closer he came to me, the more my heart thumped in my chest. “My stomach feels weird.” I remember blurting that out to him as he reached the last rung of the monkey bars. “Maybe we’ve been outside too long. It’s kinda hot.” He had replied, “I’ll give you a piggyback ride to your sister’s house.” Over time, my crush grew and grew until I thought I would explode into an “I love you” bomb every time I saw him. Luckily, the love gods were kind and spared me because it ended up being Wonjae blurting out a hurried “Iloveyou!” after we finished an all-night video game marathon. Today, he took me back to the same park we always went to and he told me about when he fell in love with me. It was in middle school when I snuck out to comfort him in our favorite park after his dad passed away. After he told me that, he got on one knee and proposed to me right next to the little pond where we used to catch fish, across from the monkey bars where I first fell in love, and next to the benches where we spent countless hours talking together. After what seemed like forever, Luke continued the family tradition of marrying at the park. It was such a beautiful ceremony.
