Joel and Sophie are the same age but Joel is much less aware in a very general sense. It could be in part because of the visitor's effects, but I think the dialogue about the reading assignment that they've got "due on Monday" puts a spin on that. Same with the cartoons channel not running.

Like, Joel being the eldest in a family of five probably meant he got overlooked. Younger children generally take priority and more dedicated care than an eight year old. He probably watched cartoons a lot! stick a kid in front of a T.V. and you don't need to worry so much. Like, I'm not saying Joel's parents had to be negligent but it's kind of silly to think it was all sunshine and rainbows, too. Their apartment's big but it's still an apartment.

Sophie telling Joel she didn't even bother with reading for school is funny. Like, duh, obviously school's not happening all those kids are lost in a sewer. But Joel doesn't get it. It's just like, Sophie is outgoing and really into this whole apocalypse thing and Joel probably wasn't an outdoors kid already, and now everything's even more messed up. Maybe he needs to pretend he's okay and the first step is thinking about what life was like before the world went to shit. Baby steps Teeth.

I kind of think like this because I imagine Joel as being transfeminine. This kid is dealing with the world so badly and although it's never been this bad, was it ever really good?

It's not really just about Joel, of course.
