The age thing is going to give kids a *false sense of security*. Thatâs why weâre against it. Someone putting their age as seventeen does not MAKE THEM seventeen. The kind of people you are hoping to keep kids safe from are the very people who are going to lie about their age. Normalizing the view of, âOh, their bio says theyâre 17, so that means they are okay for me to talk toâ is NOT a good thing for the community.
And the community ISNâT mainly 13 - 17 year olds. 17-year-olds-and-younger make up about ~15%~ of Tumblrâs demographic. Thatâs why most of the ads you see are not things typically intended for children. And despite what younger fandom now thinks, itâs been that way from the start. Tumblr started out as a micro-blogging platform geared towards people who wanted to easily post photos and videos; it was created to particularly entice artists, photographers, and film-makers. Not children. Fandom just colonized this place, and since social media became A Thing, âFandomâ includes more people under 18 than ever before.
You should be assuming that most people on this site are 21+ to begin with, and act accordingly. Assume anyone you might be interacting with is an adult. If you donât see a posted age in their bio? Thatâs an adult. If you see a posted age and itâs under 21? Assume that could easily be a *lying* adult. STAY. SAFE.
And if youâre NOT an adult, Iâd recommend EVEN STRONGER that you do NOT put your age in your bio. Thatâs just flashing an arrow at yourself for the kind of people who you are most hoping to avoid. The kind of person who is *just going to lie about their age* in the first place when they go to strike up a âfriendshipâ with you.

IT. CANNOT. BE. TRUSTED.
IT. DOES. NOT. MAKE. *ANYONE.* SAFER.
