cainhawthorne:
Heâd been pushed to the surface, leaving him no place left to hide as his wounds were fresh and open for anyone to be able to touch but since that moment, Cain had resolved to pull himself back in and leave nothing to slip out again. Even as his body groaned beneath the weight of her arms wrapped around him, Cain didnât fight it this time. They werenât talking. They werenât even friends, knowing that he wasnât the type of person that anyone could want to be around when he was stuck like this, he went rigid for a moment before slowly holding her in close and tucking her in close. Her words were almost lost if it werenât for the silence that hung around him much longer than anyone else in this town, except possibly her, as he frowned. There was no moving forward for him, not when he refused to let go of the past and things that were out of his control, none of that changed who heâd become almost too easily to believe that he wasnât this man the whole time. Instead of saying anything, he pressed a soft kiss atop her head as if wanting her to stop talking, stop trying, and to just let him go but he knew that she wouldnât even after everything heâd put her through.
The tension bled out of her shoulders as he returned her embrace, her fear that heâd push her away yet again at least for the moment dissipating against the solid warmth of his chest, his arms around her, and maybe it didnât mean much, but it meant something, and it felt a little like progress. For what felt like too long, she allowed herself to enjoy the moment, absorbing everything that finally, for the first time in forever, felt right, before finally stepping back, her hand remaining on his shoulder. âCâmon, at least let me clean up your eye and get some ice on it, get the swellinâ to go down. Yeah?â She gave his shoulder a gentle squeeze, trying to keep her tone sounding unaffected.
cainhawthorne:
There it was again, the disappointment that would have brought a better man to his knees in forgiveness but he clung to his numbness to the point where he didnât know how to function without it. It dulled everything, right down to the press of her fingers against his face where he could only feel the barest of touches. âDel   you canât save me. I ainât cominâ back from this.âÂ
She sighed, her breath shaking and shuddering--she thought she was stronger than this, stronger than wanting to break down each time she saw that look in his eye, that dull, far away gaze that meant heâd tuned out, pushed everything back, shoved everything he felt aside. âHow many times do I have tell you Iâm not tryinâ to save you?â Despite knowing it might hurt him, or that it might be unwelcome, she threw her arms around him. Even if he shoved her away, at least heâd know that, at least to her, he meant something. âItâs not about cominâ back, itâs about movinâ forward,â she mumbled into his shoulder, not even entirely sure heâd heard her.
lexpxrker:
âYeah, you. Iâm serious.â Lex nodded, smiling slightly. She shook her head, fighting back a laugh, âAll people are great subjects, donât worry about that.â
âOh, well, I--I sâppose if you want, I canât really say no. Whatâs it for, some kinda project?â
cainhawthorne:
It was the only answer he had for her right then, even as he knew that he should only turn away and leave her on the outskirts of his life, her fingers pulled him back in as he let her inspect his face. Of course she would think it was her fault, everything that he did nowadays was, but it didnât make it any easier to answer with a nearly hoarse reply. âI let it out.â
âOh,â she sighed, all fear and resignation and disappointment, her fingers brushing softly over his face, his eye swollen shut, dried blood on his lip, her heart in her throat. Part of her wanted to ask how, ask why, to press and pry, but it would only push him away.â---... Câmon, letâs--letâs go get you cleaned up, yeah?â

âThatâs not an answer.â She reached up, hands gently, hesitantly resting on the sides of his face, eyes searching, carefully assessing the damage. âWhat did you do?â

Will: Time flies when you're watching Netflix.
Del: oh? what've you been binge-watching?
âHey, uhâ Sorry to trouble you, but do you have a second?â Lexâs fingers twitched around the camera in her hands, offering the figure in front of her a gentle smile. âIâm kind of working on a new project- trying to get back into the swing of things, I guess- and I was wondering if I could take your photograph? You can totally say no, thatâs fine, I just wanted to ask first..â
lexpxrker:
â---... Me? You serious?â Del let out an incredulous laugh, gently shaking her head in disbelief. âI--I mean, if you want, but Iâm sure you could find a better subject than me.â
russellsampson:
âOh, yeah, Iâm---yeah, Iâm good. Just peachy.â

cainhawthorne:
Itâs nothinâ.
âOh my God, Cain, what happened?â
a rude awakening [ del & cain ]
cainhawthorne:
âNo one has to watch nothinâ. I didnât ask you to be here. I didnât tell you to come anâ see what Iâve become. No one is makinâ you stay where youâre not welcome,â he paused, a stumble in the harsh words that tumbled out of his lips almost as easily as heâd raised the bottle to meet them. They didnât sound like him at all and yet, it was so easy to see a glimpse of himself in any reflective surface and see the type of man heâd become almost overnight. Nothing like the man heâd once been, the one that she was trying to find among the mess he had everywhere, but she couldnât see that he didnât exist anymore. Not even when he was hungover and as close to sober as heâd ever be before cracking open another bottle and letting it numb the pain.
He didnât ask her to come there, to try and help, or to even watch him slowly kill himself one drink at a time. He didnât ask anyone to stick by him and watch as the pain of losing his brother turned him into someone that he never wanted to be, watching the pain on his words strike her like fingers to a slap, and Cain stumbled. He never wanted to be that person, the one that hurt more than he helped but the anger boiled down the loss that he could feel everywhere and all the time. There was no letting it go and putting down the only thing he could use to help him out. It wasnât possible. And she couldnât see it. She refused. He shook his head, pulling back from the edge of the counter as he took another drink from the bottle and felt it burn all the way down.
His eyes narrowed at hers, daring her to say something else about his drinking, about him, or about anything that neither one of them could stop when he was already this far gone. âWhy are you even still here, Del?â His words were low and rough, barely hearing them himself as he took another drink without breaking eye contact, letting go of the stumble where he felt a fresh sear of pain course through him when he thought for a moment how his words would be hurting her. All she had to do was walk away and then she wouldnât have to see anything or listen to him anymore. Thatâs all she had to do while he was stuck until the day came when he didnât feel anything anymore.
Each one of his words hit like physical blows, one after another, driving the breath from her second by second. He sounded so far away, as if a ghost were speaking through him, using his mouth to form words that sounded wrong, harsh lies that despite everything couldn't be contested. It felt like trying to reason with a man made of stone, a statue so set in his ways that even getting him to blink would be an impossible feat. And still, even stone would move if pushed hard enough, could wear away and smooth over given enough time. She just didn't know how much time she'd have, if she kept pushing, how much she could get away with before he snapped. And should she? Was it fair to expect him to behave in the way she thought he should, or was it selfish? These questions plagued her, haunting her and accompanying each thought of him.
Her jaw clenched in an effort to halt her trembling lips, every muscle in her hands tense with indecision, with fear and frustration and displaced grief. "I'm not welcome? Fine." She pulled his house key from her back pocket, dropping it on the counter with a strange sense of finality, the atonal metallic chime echoing in the resulting silence, hanging between them. She knew very well what he'd read it as, what he'd see in the simple gesture. He'd think she was giving up on him, and God, at that point, she wanted nothing more than to be able to. But giving up on him would be as physically impossible for her as flying, and she knew that however much he refused to believe it, he wasn't a lost cause.
His question scared her a little, his tone making it quite clear that he didn't know, that he really had no idea why she'd bother. The worst part was that she wasn't quite sure anymore either. It was as if he'd asked her why she was still breathing. (Not because she wants to, but because she can't not.) "'Cause I care, okay? 'Cause I don't want you endin' up chokin' on your own vomit in the middle of the night or starvin' or somethin' equally stupid and preventable, and I'm scared that's exactly where you're headed if someone doesn't do somethin'." She shook her head, stepping closer to where he was standing. "You know what you're doin' is self-destructive, you know it's bad, so why keep doin' it? What's the point?"

âAre we back to this again? Câmon, Tess. You want me to go show off my strength so you can fall in love with me all over again or somethinâ?â
