Sometimes I stop and remember that mike judge's two best shows are both, in part, about what it means to deal with a traumatic childhood and try to do right by your kids rather than passing that on. Jake, Hank, neither of them has the tools or the education to really dig into it, but they know they don't want their kids to feel how they felt. Hank's better at it because he's not a secondary character like Jake, but they're both about it, and it's such a big part of why King of the Hill and Daria feel like they have so much heart. I wonder if it'd be interesting to go through the series and actually examine Hank's symptoms properly, see if we can diagnose him.
(I was watching some old episodes again and rewatched the season two premiere and cracked up laughing when hank is just openly trying to discuss his childhood ptsd flashbacks for the first time and his sports therapist tells him to stop wasting valuable session time. Its such a sweet episode honestly, with how it ends.)
