Sorry, no smut⌠yet. Plain and innocent meeting; Emma is feeling lonely and just wanted a bit of company around Christmas time. Itâs going to be really fun writing about these two; I honestly look forward to it because of reasons. Also, keep an eye out for possible foreshadowing. Sorry for the long wait, hope this makes up for it! :)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emma had hung out with all the guys the night before because they werenât going to see her until after the holidays; Rick was seeing her on Christmas, so he wasnât complaining much. They had band practice for a little then they all went to the park and played in the snow, despite their ages and all the weird stares they got. After, they all went to Rickâs house for hot chocolate and watched a movie before they left. Rick insisted he walk her home, which displeased Joe. Each of them gave her a gift and made her swear that she wouldnât open them until Christmas day, which seemed a bit ridiculous but she promised regardless. Joe, Pete, and Steve were going to head to the pub. They almost literally dragged Sav out of the house because he wanted to stay with Emma longer, which they scoffed at.
It was a lie; not entirely though. Her parents were going to visit relatives, but she had faked sick so she didnât have to make the trip just because she didnât feel like leaving town, typical. Her parents didnât want to leave her alone but she convinced them sheâd be fine. They would be back Christmas Eve morning, though. She also didnât want the guys to bother her for a couple days; it was really becoming overbearing. She got to relax but then felt a bit lonely. She could call Rick, but heâs been acting a little strange towards her lately and she wanted to have some space between them for the moment. In an instant, someone came to mind that she could call. Picking up her phone, she dialed the number that was scribbled on a crumpled piece of paper on her night stand and waited. She knew for a fact that they wouldnât say anything to anyone.
âHello?â A groggy voice on the other end was vaguely heard.
âOh, sorry to wake you, Steve. I didnât realize how late it was.â Emma quickly apologized looking at the clock that read 10:56pm.
âNah, itâs alright. Wait, is that you Emma?â Steve questioned, leaning over to turn on a light. Squinting at the brightness briefly before he sat up.
âUm, yeah.â Emma then thought that maybe this was a mistake, calling Steve. She also thought that it was so great to hear his voice.
âI thought you went to Northampton to see family?â He replied as he ran a hand through his tangled hair. Emma couldnât keep it built up inside her anymore; she just had to let it out.
âNo, the parents went and I didnât want to go. Funny story actually, I told the guys that I was going, so I could get a break from all the attention theyâve been giving me. No matter how much I think it was nice of them to do so, itâs been such a pain in the ass. Even Rick has been acting weird around me; I donât appreciate that. I felt suffocated, and now I feel lonely because I have no one to talk to.â
Emma put her head down on the desk and let out a frustrated grunt. Steve was silent; he could tell that guys were annoying her, but every time he spoke, they just glared at him. He felt honored, in a way, that she decided to call him instead of Rick.
âPlease donât tell them I called you, theyâll be after me again. I just need a couple days away from them.â
âYou âave my word, love.â
All Emma could do was smile. She was so happy that she was talking to someone, but not just anyone, this was Steve.
They decided to talk on the phone for a while longer, mainly because Steve didnât want to leave her alone. He didnât care if he was exhausted from band practice and was half asleep; he wanted to keep talking to her. Also, he wasnât sure when heâd ever get this chance again. It was almost one in the morning before they decided to call it a night, but not before Emma asked him a question that plagued her mind for the last hour.
Emma chewed on her lip before she continued. âDo you want to come over tomorrow? I mean, if youâre doing something with your family then I understand.â
Steve smiled at how embarrassed she seemed to be. To be honest, his family didnât do anything major around Christmas time like most. Besides, he refused to let her be alone, regardless how many times he spent it alone himself.
âI would love to. When do you want me to come over?â He inquired.
Emma mentally freaked out, but in a good way. She gave him a time and had him write down her address before they said their goodnights and hung up. Once she put that phone down, she screamed into her pillow. Apparently she wasnât fast enough because Steve could hear a faint squeal of happiness previous to hanging up. He just chuckled, feeling satisfied with himself. He finally had something to do on a holiday; he finally had someone to spend it with.
The next morning, Emma hopped out of bed and went straight into the shower. She was so excited that Steve would be coming over in a couple of hours. Being undecided with what to wear, she just wore jeans and a t-shirt; hoping that wouldnât be too bland. She did tie her hair back with a red and green bow and gave herself bangs. She also made herself some cereal. By the time she finished, it was almost noon and Steve would be arriving shortly. Cleaning her room the best she could and tucked away anything she found embarrassing. At that time, the doorbell rang; her heart skipped a beat. She really liked Steve, obviously. She went down to answer the door and there he stood. Faint ginger permed hair, suit jacket with a Led Zeppelin raglan and jeans; she almost fainted at the sight.
Steve was three years her senior, she couldnât imagine him wanting to hang out with her, let alone talk to her. With the band was one thing, this was something completely different. He was willing to keep their meeting a secret from his friends, who were infatuated with her, including her own best friend, and theyâve only known each other not even a month. Emma came back to reality when she realized he was shivering and invited him in. She didnât even notice the flower in his hand.
âThis is for you, love.â Steve said, handing her the flower. It was a thorn-less, single red rose. She knew that meant something, she just didnât know what, but she was too embarrassed to ask.
âThank you, Steve.â Her smile was absolutely genuine, this was the happiest sheâd been in a while. âUm, make yourself at home.â She chuckled nervously. She had never been alone with a guy in her house before, not even Rick.
Steve took this opportunity to study his surroundings. The walls were a warm yellow with dark brown trim and hard wood floors. All around were family pictures or paintings. A fireplace sat in the middle of the living room that had a couch and two chairs. Her home did seem quite comfortable; he wouldnât mind living in a house similar to it. Steve had stripped his jacket, putting it up on a peg in the hallway and made his way to the kitchen.
Emma had put the rose in a little vase with water then went on to making some hot chocolate for the two of them, thatâs when she heard Steve walk in. She was mixing its contents when she finally looked up, almost dropping the mugs. God, heâs so hot.
âOh, um, I-I thought youâd might want some hot cocoa since its cold out.â She stuttered, handing him a glass mug.
âThanks, love.â He smiled as he gingerly held the mug between his slender his hands. âYou have such a beautiful home, it feels very cozy.â
âI suppose. I havenât been away from here long enough to miss it. Guess when youâre around something for so long, you become accustomed to it and its beauty seems to fade.â Steve absorbed her words and found her to be much more intelligent than he had thought. Not that he thought she was stupid, never, but she seems very mature for her age. Maybe thatâs because sheâs always around adults, he thought. He kept his comments to himself as they sipped their drinks in silence until Emma finally spoke.
âWould you like to see my room?â She questioned, then realizing what she had just said, tried to explain her offer. âOh, uh, not like that. I mean, just to see my room. I have some records that we could listen to.â She blushed.
âOf course, darlinâ.â He laughed, seeing how tense she was, he thought it was adorable how innocent she was. Emma gave a slight giggle and led the way up to her bedroom.
Steve followed closely behind as they walked down the painting covered hallway to her room. When she opened the door, he could see the space was filled with light. Well⌠this is a bit different from how I pictured it to look.
Emmaâs room also hardwood floors; the walls were turquoise but could be vaguely seen due to the array of posters and clippings from magazines that concealed them. From Led Zeppelin to Aerosmith, The Ramones to Black Sabbath, David Bowie to Van Halen, and the like. Various bookcases and shelves clung to any surface they could; there was also a corner that was filled with vinyls and 45s, surrounding a record player. A red oak desk sat next to her bed, which had a faint green blanket and pale yellow sheets with flowers. On the other side of the desk leaned an acoustic guitar. Steve made sure to take note of that. And on the opposite side of the room was the door to a bathroom, it seemed.
Emma patted in her socks over to her desk and sat her hot chocolate down carefully, Steve followed suit.
âWell, what are you in the mood for? Name it and Iâll most likely have it,â She laughed and sauntered over to the record player. âGo on, donât be shy. Sit wherever.â
Steve looked at her and chuckled. He chose to sit and the end of her bed, figuring that seemed harmless enough.
âWhatever Zep album is your favourite, love.â He smirked as she put on Led Zeppelinâs debut album.
Steve began to ponder about what he wanted to listen to now.
âYou got any Boston?â Emmaâs head shot up then slowly dropped back down with a smile.
âYeah. Which album? I have two.â
âTheir first one, I like that one.â He replied, leaning against the baseboard.
Emma picked up the album, slid the sleeve off, placed it on the player and lowered the needle. The first song, More Than A Feeling, started playing as she turned the volume up. She then walked back over to her cocoa and sat on her bed facing Steve.
âWhy did you pick Boston?â She asked, raising the mug to her lips.
âI dunno, someâin Iâm in the mood for.â He shrugged. âWhy? Did you not want to play that?â
âOh no no, thatâs not it. Itâs just,â She smiled. âIâm from Boston.â Emma laughed seeing the surprise on Steveâs face.
âNo way.â He grinned, interested in the sudden turn of conversation.
âYes way. Its really ironic, Iâm not much of a fan of the band but I have their records. I guess itâs just because they remind me a little bit of home.â She looked off into the distance, taking another drink.
Emma proceeded to tell Steve about her birth and early life in the States, never failing to miss a single detail. Steve drank his hot chocolate and fixed his gaze on her face in intense interest. After she had finished, she asked him about how the band has been going.
âAh, itâs going alright. I feel confident that we can get out there if we played more gigs but, ya know.â Emma nodded her head in agreement, even though she didnât quite understand,
"Yeah, careful what you wish for though." She said, finishing her drink.
Now if you're feelin' kinda low 'bout the dues you've been paying
Future's coming much too slow
And you wanna run but somehow you just keep on stayin'
Can't decide on which way to go
They sat in a brief silence. Steve finally finished his cup as well and placed it on her desk next to Emmaâs.
Now you're climbin' to the top of the company ladder
Hope it doesn't take too long
Can't cha see there'll come a day when it won't matter
Come a day when you'll be gone
Take a look ahead, take a look ahead. Look ahead.
After what had seemed like hours, the sky had begun to darken. One of the reasons Emma always hated winter was it would always get dark too early.
Her and Steve had continued to talk about anything that caught their interest. She really got to know more about him, that pleased her immensely. Although, he did avoid anything that had to do with his parents⌠more specifically, his father. Emma understood that everyone has their own issues and didnât push that topic any further. Starting to become tired, Emma leaned back against the headboard as Steve continued to talk. Bostonâs record still spinning as it seems to fade into the distance.
You must understand this, I've watched you for so long
That I feel I've known you, I know it can't be wrong
Steve, too, was starting to drift off after a comfortable silence had blanketed both of them. He then remembered that Emmaâs parents were coming back home early the next morning, and he didnât want them to assume anything if Steve was still there. Groaning as he pulled himself off her bed and stood up, stretching as he looked back down at Emma. She must âave fallen asleep while I was talkinâ, he chuckled. Steve reached for the quilt that was folded at the bottom of her bed and covered her gently, leaning over to kiss her forehead. He turned towards her desk, leaving something next to the mugs before he walked over to the record player to turn it off.
But there was something about you
I want you to know
It brought a change over me
It's startin' to show
I got this feelin' inside, gotta have you, have you
Ain't no good to hide.
It isn't easy
To show what I'm feeling inside, girl
It isn't easy
I know, to believe in a man like me
Like me, can't cha see
I gotta gotta have you
But there was something about
Yeah there was something about you.
Steve took one last look behind him, smiling, and then closed the door to Emmaâs bedroom. He made his way down the stairs, grabbing his suit jacket, and was heading out the front door, locking the top of the door before he did so. He then decided to make his way up to Rickâs and ask for a ride home, heâll think of an excuse on the way there.
Emma woke up with a smile on her face and felt very warm. She was about to go back to sleep when she looked at the clock on her wall; it read 3:47pm. Shit, she thought. She jumped right out of bed and headed straight for the shower.
Emmaâs parents were downstairs, finishing getting ready for the Christmas party they were heading to when Emma ran down the stairs. She walked into the kitchen wearing black dress pants and a white ruffled blouse.
âWhy didnât someone wake me up?â Emma asked, looking for something quick to eat in the refrigerator but finding nothing.
âWe thought you were tired, so we let you sleep.â Her mother, Diane, replied. Her father just stood there fixing his tie then grabbing his jacket, completely ignoring the situation.
âLetâs go, weâre going to be late.â He grunted as he head out the door, Diane and Emma followed. All Emma could do was roll her eyes.
Later that evening, Emma had come home and was completely fed up with socializing. She said good night to her parents, going upstairs to change and trying to decide if she should call Rick. She went against it and threw all the clothes she was wearing into her laundry basket, changing into an old shirt of herâs from America with panties and climbed into bed. As soon as her head hit the pillow, she was out like a light.
The next morning was much more subtle; Emma woke up with more ease and got to lounge in bed for a few minutes. When she moved over on her side, she noticed a little blue box on her desk. She threw back the covers and walked over to it. On the little card, it read: Do not open until Christmas. Emma glanced at the clock, it was 10:35am Christmas morning. She looked back at the box and opened it. Inside was a silver necklace with a guitar on it, which was also silver. She smiled hugely, then she noticed a note at the bottom of the box. She picked it up and unfolded it:
I know how much you enjoy music, so I thought you would like this. Itâs mine and I want you to have it.
Merry Christmas, Emma.
Emma clasped a hand over her mouth. Steve mustâve left this the other night after I fell asleep. She concurred that this was the most thoughtful present she had ever received. She unhooked the back and put the necklace on. She looked at herself in the mirror and couldnât stop smiling. I have to remember to thank him. She traced the jewelry once more before she went on to get dressed for the dayâs events, Rick and his parents were coming over for dinner.
The rest of the evening went rather smoothly. Emma decided to wear a dress for once, a deep red one with black ballet flats and a green bow in her hair. Company had finally arrived; Rick had given her a huge hug and asked her about the trip.
âOh, it was the usual. Absolutely boring.â They both chuckled as the parents reunited.
âYou look beautiful, Emma. As always.â Rick took her hands in his and twirled her around, thatâs when he noticed the necklace. Isnât that Steveâs? He looked back at her and just smiled. Heâll make sure to ask him about it.
Many laughs were shared and good times ensued. Rick seemed to back to his usual self, for the most part anyway. He was still acting a little weird, and she hoped it would pass soon. Eventually everyone left; Rick asked if sheâd be at the next band practice in two days and she assured him that sheâd be there and would call him tomorrow. He gave her a kiss on the cheek and left.
âWell, that was nice, wasnât?â Diane asked cheerfully. Emmaâs father, John, just smiled and went into the kitchen to pour himself another glass of wine. Emma hugged her mother and went upstairs.
She was finally starting to absorb what had happened the past three days; it had been a pretty hectic. Emma remembered her time with Steve on the 23rd and then couldnât stop smiling, once more. She couldnât wait to see him again at practice; he was totally worth dealing with the rest of them. Her mind started wonder if she was in love with him. Iâve only known him a month, thatâs crazy, she thought to herself. Either way, she didnât care and had fallen asleep with Steve on her mind and a smile on her face.
