i'm a big fan of the "ben braeden slowly starts to regain his memories about that year dean spent as his dad but lisa is happy now and doesn't seem to remember so ben doesn't want to bring up bad memories and instead he tracks dean down himself so he can confront him about abandoning his family and wiping their memories because holy shit that's dark even for you" headcanon <3

something i noticed is that sam drives the impala so much more often in season 1 than he does later, and considering we know dean allows others to drive the impala as a peace offering at times, i see this as yet another way dean was begging sam to stay. i have nothing else to offer, but i'll let you drive her. see, i still trust you. do you trust me?

my favorite thing about sam is when he's annoyed that dean isn't giving him an answer so he just yells DEAN! in the squeakiest voice that only a bitchy little brother can muster

the narrative is not sympathetic enough to dean when it comes to mary's return. it's almost treated like he's being misogynistic for wanting his mom to be nurturing and loving like he remembers her being. his entire life he's clung onto those four years of vague memories which john only fortified by telling such idealistic stories of mary being the perfect wife and mother. then she comes back and she's nothing like who dean thought she was; she doesn't cook, she doesn't dress the same, she doesn't even seem to want to spend time with him. i don't blame mary for the way she felt and i think the way she reacted was completely understandable, but the way the story is told, it feels like dean specifically is being punished for having a certain idea of his mom. all things considered, he adapted pretty quick and he gave her space when she asked for it, but the story still framed it as if dean was some kinda Horrible Man Child for wanting his mom's attention

they never did a genderswap episode because they knew dean would never emotionally recover
