It felt childish, but Dean couldn’t help the way his head tilted and his eyes narrowed, like this new vantage point could really let him through the defense of John’s dark eyes and see whatever it was he was trying to hide. He couldn’t. Not unless he wanted him to.

So never.

But one thing Dean did recognize was the self-loathing. He hadn’t noticed before, or maybe he had always just thought his father too much of a hero to accept it, but it was there. And Dean related.

Still, his lips parted. “Why would you do that?”

''Why?'' John spat, as if incapable of fathoming any sort of confusion. Wasn't it obvious why he'd want to kill his savior? Then again, he supposed understanding would come with some difficulty. He'd been in Hell- the person (or thing, or whatever) who had dragged him back up should be given his gratitude, or at the very least, his thanks. Not a bullet to the head. But he didn't suppose Dean would understand.

Dean hadn't given up his wife for television. Dean hadn't spoiled his sons' attempts at childhood. Dean hadn't been responsible for the deaths of so many hunters, so many innocent people- Dean hadn't screwed up. Or at least, not as horribly as John. He hoped, at least. He hoped his son was innocent, or as innocent as a Winchester could be, and he hoped that things remained as stable as they had been. He hoped Dean had held on, he hoped his son had refrained from falling into the same pit he had.

How long had he been dead? Long enough for things to go wrong?

''I deserve to rot down there, Dean,'' He explained simple, jabbing a finger at the grass. He stood back, and shook his head, looking rather evidently annoyed. He crossed his arms over his chest, and averted his gaze to the floor.
