Along with the 3 pairs being drawn as vampires and werewolves in the halloween art the ones with more parallels to the silverwood are vampires while their respective stars are werewolves
Not sure if that means anything important
One must consider the mythos of vampires and werewolves when looking at these three pairs.
Werewolves can be inflicted, but are most typically born into werewolf families. Agott, Tartah, and Olruggio are all witch-born.
On the other hand, in most vampire mythology, vampires are not born, only made. Coco and Custas were originally outsiders, and we can only assume Qifrey was one as well.
I was trying to think of other things connecting characters to the speciesā mythos, but thereās a good deal of overlap so I canāt say much⦠I was originally going to say āoh the werewolves are werewolves because they have big transformations! Agott becomes nicer, Tartah becomes a brimmed cap, Olly⦠becomes a workaholic?ā That doesnāt work out very well, and also vampires can transform.
Then it was āthe vampires are all secretive!ā Nope. Custas has been shouting out every emotion heās had since becoming a witch.
The werewolves are all rejects? But Olly was a prodigy so that doesnāt work unless you count being rejected by Qifrey initially.
Haaaaaahhhhh if anyone has more thoughts lmk
The only thing I can think of is that werewolves are loyal to those they view in their pack or those they care for, and we can see just how loyal Olruggio, Agott, and Tartah are to Qifrey, Coco and Coustas to the point where they're willing to break or breach the witches code for them.
Adding on to your point about werewolves representing witch borns and vampires representing outsiders, the interpretation of the vampire and werewolf relationship depicts a fur vs. fang rivalry. This can be read as the tense relationship that witch hat atelier presents between witches and outsiders. What's even more fitting is that the fur vs fang rivalry is a new and modern interpretation that crept into literary works later on, representing how humans and witches were united prior to the formation of the pact.
On a different note, vampires are technically 'dead' beings or monsters that are classified as undead. All the vampire characters have experienced some form of life-threatening event that left them stuck in the limbo of life and death. The interpretation seems more applicable to the current hosts of the silverwood, in my opinion.
The fact that all three pairs fit some aspects of the werewolf and vampire narrative is likely to show their own unique differences in the narrative journeys they will take. You can see it best with how Olruggio and Qifrey's story aligns well with silverleaf tree and the stars while Coustas and Tartah's story matches the witch and silvertree tale. Agott and Coco will either be another variation of these myths or they will become their own story. This is also likely to represent the ongoing changes in witch society as each pair becomes more bold and defiant than the former, challenging, or critiquing aspects of witch society and the witches code.
A point to add on to your point about the modern fur vs fang rivalry and how it relates to witch-borns vs outsiders: thereās a theory that vampires and werewolves used to be the same creature in some old European mythos! Some old vampire stories will allow the vampires to turn into wolves/control wolves, and thatās to say nothing of the common weakness against SILVER (although with werewolves the specific silver weakness is a more modern development that came with the silver age of Hollywood)
Uhhhh something something this is probably unintentional by Shirahama but this split into two creatures mirrors the split from one magic society into a knowing and unknowing population. This is mostly just me geeking out about werewolf mythology. I love werewolves.
Fun werewolf fact! If weāre defining a werewolf as āperson who turns into a wolf,ā then the earliest example of a werewolf is from THE EPIC OF GILGAMESH. Aka the OLDEST RECORDED STORY. To relate that back to Witch Hat, the āolder/originalā group is the witches (werewolves), with the unknowing (vampires) being a somewhat more recent group only being created after the pact.
