Time to MAKE IT SAD ™

(spoilers) I ended up with the full pacifist ending where everyone lives. And this is considered the ‘happy’ ending…

But lets look at the moments that kicked *me* in the teeth, shall we?

The scene in the church after Jericho is sunk.

Markus has to decide Connor’s fate (obviously I went with ‘trust’ BUT…)

1) Connor is in a corner on his fucking own. Looking sad, small, and scared. The poor guy has just deviated and instead of experiencing the fluffy ‘found family’ route experienced by all the other protagonists, Connor is not only being ignored, he’s been actively shunned.

2) All the other deviants are huddled together, consoling each other, talking to each other, patching each other’s wounds etc. None of them even look sideways at Connor.

3) If you choose to NOT TRUST Connor: Markus shoots him. If this happens: NO ONE BATS AN EYELID. No one jumps, turns their head, or questions what the fuck just happened.

4) Meaning most (if not all) of Jericho’s surviving residents don’t trust Connor, at all. And Connor knows this, he knows there’s a chance he’s just waiting to be executed.

5) Even if Markus decides to trust Connor, we don’t see anyone changing their tune towards him after that. The only person from Jericho who shows Connor *any* faith in my playthrough is Markus himself. And even then, it’s fleeting.

6) The implication of this is that Connor Deviated, betrayed his makers, put himself in great danger, and liberated thousands of androids… only for his own kind to barely tolerate him. And, in the scene I saw, Markus himself says something along the lines of: ‘we can’t rely on Connor, we can only trust ourselves’

Like, fucking thanks bro! Connor risks life and limb to prove himself to you and Markus is all ‘nah, he probably won’t make it.’

7) In the final scene he’s stood at the back of the shipping container, isolated. No one looks at him, no one celebrates with him. No one smiles at him. (And then: Amanda happens.)

8) Everyone is so Not Arsed ™ with what’s going on with Connor, they don’t even notice he’s been hijaked by Cyberlife. He has to re-break his programming again, alone.

I don’t know guys. I’m glad Connor can be considered a person by the end of the game, and can have freedom away from Cyberlife. But the guy now seems so very alone, even amongst his own kind he’s still on the fringes of what they will tolerate.

Poor Connor

connor never, not once, forms any kind of personal connection with another android. kara has luther and alice; markus has the jericho crew. connor’s deepest relationship is with another human and that’s super telling

Yes, to all of the above!! I’ve always thought that Connor seems to be able to tolerate hatred from humans a lot better than rejection from other androids, because the former is impersonal and the latter is personal.

Connor can easily rationalize why humans would treat him like shit, even Hank. Many humans tend to hate ALL androids (for various reasons), and Connor is an android so that’s why they hate him too. He knows how to (mostly) detach himself emotionally from that.

But to be hated and mistrusted by other androids would mean that they don’t hate Connor because of WHAT he is, but because of WHO he is. The deviant androids would of course accept him for being an android, but they don’t accept him because he’s Connor, aka Cyberlife’s spy who kills androids.

All the androids carry the burden of being hated by humans, which is why they can find support and understanding in each other. But being personally rejected by his own kind means that Connor has to deal with it alone. :((

Like it’d be one thing if Connor had knowingly and intentionally done the shit he did, but since he’s an android who literally could not refuse and had been programmed into obedience it’s just fucking sad. Once he realizes the scope of what he’s done and the deaths he’s indirectly led to he’s got to be filled with so much self-loathing (and fear, because he knows how easy it is for Cyberlife to take him back). 

Markus’ interactions with Connor compared to other androids have always felt less altruistic to me, like there was a thread of manipulation in them. This can tie in with theories on whether you believe all RK models have similarities, and that Connor’s greatest strength is his ability to adapt to any interaction and manipulate those around him.

It can make your heart pound and your stomach flutter. It can make you nervous to act upon it. It can be just as full of meaning and desire as any relationship, and it can be confusing at times, but that’s alright.
