This may be a strange question, but if you receive a sign name that you don’t like or find offensive how do you go about telling the person who gave it to you? I don’t know if this ever happens, but I feel like surely there are some sign names that a person just wouldn’t like. Similar to how some people hate their real names and prefer a nickname? Sorry if this is a dumb question
I guess it sort of depends on why you don’t like the name sign? And the relationship you have with her person giving you said sign name. I would communicate that to whoever gave you your name sign if you feel comfortable. But keep in mind it may be referencing something you may not know about. You can ask why that person chose that for your sign name and they will likely explain why. And if it has an element that makes you feel uncomfortable, you can choose to let them know as well.
But sort of like other gifts that people can revive, you won’t like every gift. I’ve had sign names I didn’t like, hell I’m not a huge fan of my current one. But I consider it more of a “transitional” sign name until I come across one that I feel “fits”.
Would it be ok to portray a deafblind character as not wanting to be blind specifically because vision is important to Deaf culture? There are other blind characters and not all of them feel the same way about being blind. Also the deafblind character doesn’t get cured, and their attitude is more like “yeah I don’t like it but I need to learn to accept it” instead of thinking their life is ruined or something
A DeafBlind Character Not Wanting to be Blind
Note: DeafBlind is written with an uppercase D and B with respect to Deaf culture and for the ease of screen-readers respectively.
I am not DeafBlind myself and so I’m not sure. I think all the additions you listed could be beneficial, but I don’t have a way to measure how beneficial. I don’t feel comfortable giving an answer about blindness here because I am not DeafBlind. However, I didn’t want to leave you with nothing, so I wanted to share a few links.
Vision is indeed important to Deaf culture. However, there are Deaf people like YouTuber Jessica Kellgren-Fozard who are blind in one eye or otherwise visually impaired. There are DeafBlind people such as writer Elsa Sjunneson. They are still part of Deaf culture.
A character who loses vision may have all manner of difficult, alternating feelings about it, particularly when learning new ways of doing daily tasks or if the vision loss progresses over time. However, realistic, messy feelings can still read as ableist (or not) depending entirely on how it is written and the way the story treats blindness and DeafBlindness. My suggestion is to try to find DeafBlind people online and listen to their experiences, perhaps even get someone to read your story. If you’d feel more comfortable, you could also ask blind people who aren’t Deaf to read your story as well, as extra readers. It sounds like that might give you more peace of mind.
Good luck and I hope this helps some.
Would any DeafBlind people like to add anything? Reply, reblog, or send an ask or message with your thoughts and I will add them here.
@wolfrayets added:
I am only Deaf, but I've found that since Deaf culture tends to be proud of/unapologetic for their Deafness (in terms of culture and a very widely accepted social model of disability), many DeafBlind people I meet in Deaf spaces are similarly unapologetic and outspoken about being DeafBlind. Deaf people communicate with DeafBlind people by signing against their palms, or in cases of low vision, DeafBlind people can often still make out ASL because it's based less on detail and more on overarching handshapes. Check out adapted ASL, tactile ASL, tracking ASL. So they definitely wouldn't need to be language deprived or isolated from the Deaf community if they are DeafBlind.
BlindBeta: I also notice something similar with a lot of blind folks, so I think this would be important for DeafBlind characters. Perhaps the character meeting DeafBlind people in the community might help them feel more confident.

I proposed we use #DeafTwitter hashtag on here so we can find each other. Hello hi it’s me Quinn aka quinns_quirks or you might know me as hartsandhelbig.
Please take this picture of my cat and I as reference for who I am.
I forgot how bad the tags were for #Deaf 🫣 I might be coming back to tumblr but my god. I can already expect the same for # ASL
Anyways hello I forgot how to use tumblr and lost all my deaf interactions. So say Hemlo to me. Introduce yourself.
What if I started posting some new bullshit.
This kicks ass. Disabled activists are protesting for their rights in South Korea by literally just riding the train during rush hour.
Seriously you have no idea how many assholes we deafies run into, how this is a very common experience for us all. At least, the look on their face after I told them that I’m deaf is very priceless. But, sometimes I walk away having no idea that someone yelled at me. :/ ((and, yes, comic me is interrupting the comic to play pokemon go.)) A NOTE: I know shoulder tapping is not an option for some people who dislike being touched, such as those on autistic spectrum. Understandable. Some deaf friends and I do not like to be waved in face- it can startle us and/or caused me to be disorientated, especially in a small space. I am not fond of being touched by people as well, but, growing up in deaf community, I am used to shoulder as a neutral spot and to expecting people to get my attention that way. Basically, in small space like grocery store aisle, we’d prefer shoulder tapping. In big spaces, where it’s easy for people to get around, then waving is fine if it can be done without getting into our face. Thoughts?

If you’re autistic and/or have ADHD like me, I recommend switching to ‘Simple English’ when reading lengthy and complex Wikipedia articles because it makes it so much easier to take in, comprehend, and understand
how to do:
On the sidebar on the left, there’s a list of languages listed in alphabetical order, so you have to scroll down a bit to find ‘Simple English’. But even if you can’t, you can just edit the URL from en.wikipedia.org to simple.wikipedia.org
Here’s an example of the difference between English wiki and Simple English wiki:
English:
Simple English:
[Image 1: A lengthy article about Japan in difficult words, with long paragraphs and no pictures.
Image 2: The article about Japan, only now the text has been compressed into a mere two paragraphs and there are pictures visible on the right (the Japanese flag), as well as a table of contents.]
Holy crap this is actually a life saver
This is important and wonderful. Knowledge should be available to everyone. Not just people with the right brainware or educational background.
omg i need this
This was based on true event. When I was an elementary student in a public school, surrounded by many hearing 4th-graders. I taught my class how to fingerspell so they can communicate with me. It was wonderful. (Yay for Rochester method???) So a lot of classmates would fingerspell H-I to me as a greeting.
One day, someone came up with a “shortcut” to say “Hi” to me by putting letter “H” and “I” into one form, which unfortunately and hilariously resulted in a shocker hand gesture. For the whole freaking week, I got that shocker hand shoved up to my face by other people by people as a greeting. It stopped a week later, I guess probably because a teacher banned it or other people found out what that gesture really meant, lol.
Educational note: It is considered culturally disrespectful if a hearing person makes up a sign or grant name sign to someone. Only Deaf ASL person can do that. This picture is a good example of why a hearing person should /NEVER/ make up a new sign without Deaf consultation, hahaha.

um oops...
Um...so i haven’t posted in like almost a year probably. Sorry for abandoning you tumblr..... I don’t know if I told you guys, but I’ve sort of made a shift over to Youtube/twitter as I enjoy the interaction much more over there. Tumblr will always have a place in my heart, but it isn’t my preference anymore. I don’t want to just look at the retweets and likes. Like I want to hear (hehe hear lolool) your thoughts and opinions. Even if they are not the same as mine. Feel free to continue to ask questions, but know I may not get back to them until a month or so. and um major update since last post, we have the best emoji now. 🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟
Oh, just hide it.
No.
Why should I? People shouldn’t treat me differently if they see my cochlear implant.
This is so, SO important. I grew up being told to hide my hearing aids.
“Never wear your hair up.” “Never tie it back.” “Don’t tuck your hair behind your ears.” “Get the same color as your skin tone or your hair color to hide it.”
Unfortunately, this kind of thinking was drilled in my head for many years and made me insecure and ashamed about a part of me that I SHOULDN’T be. It wasn’t until I was 23 when I finally embraced it and accepted it.
Do. Not. EVER.
Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES
Tell your child(ren) to hide a part of them. Do not make your child(ren) ashamed.
Teach your child(ren) to love themselves, every flaw, their skin tone, every hair, whether it’s on their head (example: curly or kinky hair) their arms, their legs, their face.. teach them to love everything about themselves. Otherwise they spend many, many years hating themselves while searching and hoping for the wrong person to love them… when they could have loved themselves from the start. Teach your child(ren) they do NOT need someone to love them in order to love and accept themselves.
TEACH YOUR CHILD(REN) SELF LOVE.
DO NOT TELL YOUR CHILD TO HIDE A PART OF THEMSELVES.
Not their assisted listening device (cochlear implant, hearing aids, BAHA), their prosthetic(s), don’t give them lighting creams (skin tone) or call them demeaning names based on their skin tones, don’t tell them they need to lose or gain weight (which may either cause anorexia or bulimia), don’t ask them to hide that they have trouble reading or speaking (dyslexia, stuttering issues).. whatever it is..
TEACH. YOUR. FUCKING. CHILD. TO LOVE. THEMSELVES.
ESPECIALLY!
WITHOUT NEEDING SOMEONE IN ORDER TO DO IT.
SELF LOVE IS SO GOD DAMN IMPORTANT.
THIS SHOW IS SO PURE!
It’s worth noting that Kenneth spent the entire episode making the game (and the subsequent fight) as inclusive as possible for JJ and his disabled friends (all of whom were played by disabled actors/actresses).

Reblog this with a celebrity that you share a birthday with in the tags
Hearing Aid problems
Certain sounds are just so irritating because of the way they sound in your HAs but other people don’t find them annoying so they just won’t stop making the sound🙄🙄🙄
