do we think they might be subversion where rhaenyra is actually the queen in chains 👀
as stated i think the “the real prison…is POWER” take is actually in itself basically a form of monarchist apologia and so the idea that although alicent is the literal prisoner of rhaenyra it is rhaenyra who for having (partially, as the war still rages) achieved her goal of being queen is the one who is REALLY in chains is unbearably corny to me, and insulting to the fact that imprisonment and its violence is real and it is very real in awoiaf. it is not pure metaphor. the fact it operates as basically pure metaphor in meta about women who are for most of their lives in fact not imprisoned in any way (one can be abused or have one’s agency denied without it being imprisonment and people who think they aren’t different don’t know much about prison) bugs me whether show or fans does it. #againstmetaphor.
i don’t think its totally off-base, as there is a degree to which rhaenyra is trapped by this family legacy she feels she must uphold at all costs. but all this analysis misses something integral: rhaenyra is not at immiserated even once she has taken the iron throne because she is powerful, but because that power is incomplete. there’s a civil war going on! people are trying to violently remove her from her seat of power. power is a dangerous trap when you cannot possess its full authority because of a combination of misogyny and violent intercenine feud. power is not a fucking prison unless you want to argue that viserys, not alicent, was the trapped one in s1. rhaenyra’s entrapment is gendered, as alicent’s was - not an unmarked commentary on “power.” but that is how this argument goes, that rhaenyra has attained power, which is then oddly erased as such when it is reread as “duty” and “duty” in turn is read as only a source of renunciatory suffering which is opposed to things like “love” or “liberation.” and i just think this is silly to politically suspect.
I’m not sure if this will be helpful to anyone, but you literally do not have to be a good writer to write and post fan fiction. Yes you will naturally get better at writing and finding your voice the more you do it but you do not have to be or become a professional level writer to enjoy writing and sharing fics. It’s common to hear people praise fic writers by saying their work is better than published books, and while I think this comes from a good place, that’s not the norm or expectation. There is also a sentiment that fic writing is “good practice” for becoming a better writer or doing something else later, but if fic is the only creative writing you ever do that is literally okay. Your technical skill does not mean you cannot have fun and build community with your writing, or that other people cannot love and find meaning in your work.

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON S03E02 — “Queen’s Landing”
I mean, in some very interesting Technically Correct ways, they didn't actually die? Now, they're very much no longer alive. But the forces involved are such that they didn't get any of the usual cellular processes of death, they simply went from biology to physics in less time than it takes a signal to travel down your optic nerve.

"Seeing the shift in Rhaenyra's face and whole body as she sees Alicent. This breaks something in her. From this scene onward, Rhaenyra changes in a way that she doesn't even really completely understand in that moment." – Clare Kilner

Do you believe the queen's judgement to be sound? I would not serve her otherwise.
