The sand was warm and soft under Liam’s feet. He had been surprised at first, but now he was able to somewhat waddle along, barely keeping up with his parents as they walked. He was only little compared to them, and he certainly felt the difference in size as he tried to keep up while the sand shifted under each little step he took.
All around them, dragons went about their day. Liam stared, wide eyed, at each new face he saw. Some of them cast glances at him and his family, while most just ignored them entirely. There was a squeal from near the roaring waves of the ocean. Liam turned and saw a group of young fledglings running around and playing chase. He wondered if any of them would play with him.
“Liam!” his mother called.
He had fallen behind again. Liam hurried to catch up, despite the shifting sand. He tried to continue at more of a trot once he reached Evangeline’s side. She smiled down at him, then turned to check on the small hatchling on her back. Alita’s eyes were just as wide as Liam’s. He wasn’t sure how much of this his little sister would remember. She was still too young to walk on her own. But this new place would be their home from now on. His parents had tried to explain it to him, but Liam hadn’t grasped just how big a deal that was. They had never had a home before.
A shadow came over Liam and he felt the sand become cold. He looked up to see a mountainous rock formation in front of them. His parents had stopped. Liam looked at them. They were now talking to the dragon they had been following. Unlike the grey-brown colours of his family, this dragon was pale blue and seemed to tower over everyone.
“This is the entrance to the caves,” the dragon was saying. “Your young will be safe in here, as will both of you.”
“Thank you, Chieftain Clyde.” Liam’s father, Robert, dipped his head as he spoke.
“We appreciate your hospitality,” Evangeline added.
Clyde smiled. “It’s important to me that dragons feel safe during their lives, especially when young are involved. Just remember to help out however you can and you will always be welcome.”
Robert and Evangeline said their thanks again before Clyde led them into the caves. Liam followed them, feeling the cool sand gradually shift to cold, hard rock under his little feet. The caves were much darker than the sunny beach outside. For the first few minutes, Liam could barely make out the shapes of his parents as they followed Clyde. But by the time they came to a stop, Liam’s eyes had adjusted and he could see as far as the cave ceiling far above him.
Evangeline twisted her neck around and carefully picked Alita up by the tail. Alita squealed at the sudden movement, but grew quiet once she was on the ground. Liam sat next to her and poked her with his wing. She stared at him for a moment, then smiled.
“Oh, they’re so cute. How old are they?”
Liam looked up at the sound of a new voice. A pair of blue dragons were resting in this part of the cave. They both grinned down at him and Alita, then one looked up at Robert and Evangeline.
“Liam just turned three years old,” Evangeline explained. “Alita’s only about two months old.”
“Really? She’s the same age as my daughter and nephew,” the dragon said. She nudged the dragon beside her with a smile. “I’m Kelda and this is my sister, Tiffany. Would it be alright for them to meet our young?”
“Uh, yeah. That should be alright,” Evangeline said.
Kelda shuffled where she lay and ducked her head between herself and Tiffany. A moment later, she rose to her feet with two hatchlings hanging from her mouth. Kelda approached Liam and Alita and carefully set them down.
Liam stared at them for a moment. The male hatchling was a pale, icy blue and the female hatchling was more of a pale purplish blue. They stared back at him and Alita with wide eyes.
“Their names are Evelyn and Kyle,” Kelda said. “They’re the first of Chieftain Clyde’s eggs.”
Liam crouched down and stared at them. Kyle sat where he was, simply staring back at him. Evelyn got to her feet, wobbled a little, then plopped down to her belly. Alita giggled and rolled onto her side. Evelyn grinned and rolled into her. Liam couldn’t help but smile. His sister would have friends her age. Perhaps he would too, once he met some of the other dragons here.
Liam smiled. At least they would be safe in their new home. Their first ever home. Perhaps they’d even help out like his parents were expected to one day. But that would be a long way off. Liam was more interested in spending his days playing with his sister and any new friends he might make.
I decided to draw a quick piece of Darlene and Priscila from Intertwined. They don't show up much, just as background characters. Priscila works in the castle and her sister, Darlene, works part time in a jewellery store. I've never really spent much time considering what their relationship is like, but it's positive, though I'm sure they have regular sibling banters.
Heather and Henry both appear in Intertwined but Henry didn't have a design until now. I previously only described him as pale yellow, so that made choosing colours and markings for him interesting, especially when I wanted to use orange too. Anyway, I drew the two dancing together as we get to see a peek of this near the end of the book.
I decided to give some of Intertwined's background characters official designs. First up is Koa, the caretaker turned temporary guard. I realised as I drew him that someone responsible for guarding an imprisoned Rock Dragon wouldn't want to wear metal armour. So instead, he's been given some wooden armour and a leather vest, stuff that no Rock Dragon can manipulate. I also gave him a spear to cling onto to since I always imagined he'd be wrapped around one.

This week I decided to do some expressions from characters in my second book, which will be releasing later this year. From top to bottom, the characters are Clyde, Evangeline and Robert, and Kyle. It may or may not be obvious from this alone, but Kyle will be the antagonist of book two. As for Evangeline and Robert, they are Alita's parents and will show up a couple of times throughout the story.
After putting in a bunch of time trying to choose and design some potential pets for dragons, I decided to put together a quick lore piece of them. I'll admit I was trying to come up with a serious name for the slinkies, which I based on cats and the weasel family. But then I remembered that they, and weasels in general, look a little bit like slinkies on legs, so I named them as such. As for the bristleback, I based them on the extinct thylacine and a few species of wild canines (not domestic dogs though). It was a fun challenge to try and think of what a large predator would hunt on an island before being domesticated by the dragons. Thankfully, I've given Laili Island a few large prey animals, so it was in need of a large natural predator.
Well it's pride month again and I decided that I wanted to draw something for it. The first thought that came to mind was Luana and Alita and before I knew it, I had drawn a whole piece of them sleeping in on a lazy morning. I used the bisexual and lesbian flags for their pillows and blanket, since those are their personal flags. I find it nice to draw these two just being happy together every now and then.
I decided to do some fanart of Asbane's book Children of Draelia. I tried to do a shot of Skyscraper Tower, though architecture isn't my strong suit. I based the tower on Wuhan Greenland Center which, like Skyscraper Tower, is near a body of water and has a flat top. I ended up focusing on Shard and the sunset more than the tower. It was fun to try something different.
Got an urge to draw a character that won't show up for a few more books. He also got a slight redesign to keep the angle interesting. But this is Ari and his wings are the largest amongst his friends and family. When I eventually get to his story, his wings will be a factor to his story, but I won't spoil anything for now.

I found some old sketches of dragon beds and decided to whip up a quick drawing to show them off. The types of beds that dragons use varies a little. Richer dragons have four post bed frames with a large mattress and lots of pillows and blankets. Very poor dragons sometimes only have a couple of blankets to call a bed. The other two bed types are the most common. What a dragon uses depends on personal preference. Some like to curl up into a tight ball and prefer the smaller, rounder bed to help hold the ball shape, while others prefer to stretch out and use the rectangular base. Some even change their preferred bed type according to seasons and temperature.
Late in Intertwined, there's a scene where Evelyn takes Alita into the castle's gallery and they see three portraits of the most recent High Calns and their Prinzes. In the actual scene, these are depicted as full body portraits, but here I've only drawn headshots. It does show the passing of time and the crown across decades, as well as a little peak at how emotions can change in the case of Gerold and Griffin between their Prinze portraits and High Caln portraits.
The woes of character design… I actually love drawing my dragons and figuring out designs and colours and having them interact in the world. But sometimes, when drawing a character I've never done before, I really struggle with choosing something. This time, it was Tetra, a newer character who will be showing up in my second book. I knew from my time writing him that he was likely green, though I did test out some other colours. I also wanted to pull from the appearance of tetra fish in his design, hence the bright stripe running down his side. But exact colours? I was stumped. So I put this together to try and figure it out. I'm thinking I'll go with the middle option but all of the bottom row and the middle left colours are cool to me too.
Finally locked down a design for another dragon species relative, the basilisk. They are large snake-like creatures with venom and rattle tails. The fins on their backs and crests on their heads were pulled from the real life lizard called a basilisk, specifically the green basilisk. The fins are movable and larger on males than females. Aside from wyverns and raptors, these are perhaps one of the most terrifying creatures to stumble across.
Found myself a reason to do another one of these. I really thought I would stop at three but I've been really enjoying doing these pieces for Intertwined. This time it focuses on Modesty and Korbin, the antagonist and an unpleasant side character. We love to hate Modesty but Korbin is just unenjoyable as a character. Hopefully he stays in his wooden prison cell for a long, long time. Below is a snippet of the chapter for this scene:
In a flash, Modesty grabbed Korbin by his throat, ice-sharpened claws gripping his skin. Korbin’s eyes went wide. Modesty held back a grin of satisfaction. This was much better.
“I won’t be intimidated or manipulated. I’ve been doing that sort of thing long enough to recognise when someone is attempting it on me,” she warned, a growl on the edge of her voice. “I need information that you have, so you are going to tell me what I want to know.”
Korbin’s expression relaxed. He looked Modesty up and down, then smiled. “You’re clearly a very smart hen. Perhaps I’ll cooperate. After all, I find hens like you extremely attractive.”
Modesty narrowed her eyes in a hardened glare. “You’re disgusting.”
Korbin simply smiled back at her. Modesty released her grip on his throat and stepped back from the bars. Korbin felt his throat before looking back up at her.

This past week, one of my co-workers left our job for new opportunities. It was a bittersweet time. Our other co-worker and I decided to make a farewell gift for her. I made this drawing of our dragons hugging for it and we got it framed. It went over well and we're all still friends, but we're going to miss working with her.
Decided to do another scene from Intertwined in this portrait layout. This time, it's Luana and her brother, Markos, shortly before the climax of the story. Here's a little snippet of the scene below:
“Markos, it’s time to go,” she said.
“I’ll join you soon,” Markos said, his voice hollow.
“Don’t be too long,” Luana told him, too absorbed in her own thoughts to dwell on the shift in her brother.
She hesitated. This was a good opportunity to ask Markos for some advice. Perhaps he could see a way she could get out of marrying Evelyn.
“I don’t suppose you might have thought of a way I could get out of the betrothal with Evelyn? Perhaps even tonight?” Luana asked.
“The violet and the iris bring more joy than the lamprocapnos,” Markos said. His voice was flat and distant. The tone alone sent a chill down Luana’s spine.
“Okay. I don’t really know what that means,” Luana said, turning back for the Manor. Markos’s words had confused her more than if she hadn’t asked for his advice in the first place.
